Chương 7

The family Bible.

Emma stepped closer.

Her breathing changed.

"That's it."

Daniel looked at her.

"How do you know?"

She whispered.

"Because that was the last thing I saw before they buried me."

Daniel stared at the Bible.

A small envelope was sticking out from between the pages.

And written on the front were four words.

Daniel Carter.

Open when she returns.

Daniel stared at the envelope for several seconds.

His name on the paper felt heavier than any accusation.

His father's handwriting was unmistakable.

Sharp.

Controlled.

Almost arrogant.

The same handwriting that had signed birthday cards and business documents.

The same handwriting that had written the rules Daniel was forced to follow as a child.

But now it was attached to a message that had been waiting for his sister to return from the dead.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Finally, Daniel reached toward it.

Emma grabbed his hand.

"Wait."

He looked at her.

"What?"

Her eyes stayed on the envelope.

"What if this is another trap?"

Daniel looked at the words again.

"Then we find out."

Emma shook her head.

"You don't understand."

Her voice became softer.

"Your father always had a plan."

Daniel looked at her.

"You said that before."

"Because it's true."

She stepped closer.

"He never reacted to things."

She touched the envelope carefully without opening it.

"He created things."

Michael stood near the doorway.

His face was filled with regret.

"She is right."

Daniel turned toward him.

"You knew about this?"

Michael shook his head.

"No."

His voice was tired.

"But I knew your brother..."

He stopped.

Daniel noticed.

"My brother?"

Michael corrected himself.

"I mean your father."

The mistake was small.

But everyone heard it.

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

"What did you mean?"

Michael looked away.

"Nothing."

Daniel stepped closer.

"No."

His voice became cold.

"You have spent years saying nothing."

Michael looked at him.

"Daniel."

"No."

Daniel pointed toward the office.

"Every person in this house knew something except me."

He looked around the room.

"I was the only person who believed the story you gave me."

Rachel lowered her eyes.

Daniel looked back at the envelope.

"That ends now."

He picked it up.

The paper was old but perfectly preserved.

Like someone had protected it.

Like someone had expected this exact moment.

Daniel opened the envelope.

Inside was a single folded letter.

No photographs.

No documents.

Only words.

He unfolded it slowly.

The room became silent.

"Daniel," he read.

His father's voice seemed to return with every line.

"If you are reading this, then the family has failed to keep what belongs buried."

Emma closed her eyes.

Daniel continued.

"I know you will want answers."

A bitter smile appeared on his face.

"Your entire life, you searched for honesty from people who survived by hiding."

Rachel looked down.

Daniel continued reading.

"But before you decide who is guilty, understand this."

He paused.

The next sentence made everyone freeze.

"Emma was never the victim you believe she was."

Daniel looked up.

Emma's face changed.

"What?"

He looked back at the letter.

"Keep reading," Rachel whispered.

Daniel continued.

"I know Emma will tell you she found my secrets."

A pause.

"She will tell you she was trying to expose me."

Daniel looked at his sister.

"She will tell you she was innocent."

Emma stepped backward.

"No."

Daniel looked confused.

"Wait."

He kept reading.

"But the truth is always more complicated than the version people tell when they want sympathy."

Daniel's hand tightened around the paper.

His father had always been good at that.

Making people question themselves.

Making them doubt what they knew.

"Your sister found the files because she was looking for something else."

Daniel stopped.

"What?"

Emma looked terrified.

Daniel continued.

"She was not searching for my crimes."

His eyes moved across the page.

"She was searching for proof of her own."

Nobody spoke.

The words hung in the room.

Daniel slowly lowered the letter.

"What does this mean?"

Emma looked at him.

"I don't know."

But her voice was uncertain.

Daniel noticed.

"You do."

She shook her head.

"No."

"Emma."

The pain in his voice made her look away.

"Please."

She swallowed.

"There are things I don't remember."

Daniel stared.

"What?"

Emma looked at the floor.

"After they took me, they kept me drugged."

Everyone went silent.

"I lost pieces of time."

Daniel stepped closer.

"Why didn't you tell me that?"

"Because I was afraid."

"Afraid of what?"

Emma looked at him.

"That maybe he was right."

Daniel felt his heart sink.

"What do you mean?"

Emma sat down slowly in the chair near the desk.

"Your father told me I was not the person I thought I was."

Daniel looked at her.

"He said I had forgotten what I did."

Rachel covered her mouth.

Michael looked shocked.

Daniel turned.

"Did you know this?"

Michael shook his head.

"No."

Emma looked at the letter.

"He wanted me to believe I was dangerous."

Daniel stared at the page.

His father had left a message designed to destroy his trust in everyone.

But one thing bothered him.

His father had never been the type to lie without purpose.

Every lie had a goal.

Every secret had a reason.

"What did you do, Emma?"

The question hurt both of them.

Emma looked at her brother.

"I don't know."

Daniel looked away.

The answer was not enough.

But her face told him she believed it.

A sudden sound came from the hallway.

Everyone turned.

A floorboard creaked.

Someone was outside the office.

Daniel grabbed the lamp again.

"Who is there?"

No answer.

The door moved slightly.

Rachel stepped backward.

Then a small figure appeared.

Linda.

She stood in the hallway holding something in her hands.

Daniel lowered the lamp.

"Mom?"

Linda looked at the letter.

Then at Emma.

"I knew he would leave that message."

Daniel stared.

"You knew?"

Linda nodded slowly.

"I knew he planned for this night."

Emma stood.

"Why?"

Linda looked at her daughter.

May you like

"Because he was afraid of you."

Emma's face tightened.
