Chương 4

The strangers who visited the house.

The way his mother always became silent when his father entered a room.

"He kept files," Emma said.

"Files on everyone."

Daniel looked at her.

"Why?"

"Because secrets gave him power."

Michael looked toward the house.

"And because he knew one day someone would try to expose him."

Daniel felt his heartbeat increase.

"That someone was you."

Emma nodded.

"I found the files."

She looked down.

"I found proof that he had been covering up crimes for years."

Daniel swallowed.

"And you went to the police?"

Emma's expression changed.

"No."

"Why?"

"Because before I could, he found out."

Daniel looked at the dirt around them.

"What happened that night?"

Emma closed her eyes.

The memory returned.

"The night I disappeared, your father called me."

Her voice became softer.

"He told me he wanted to talk."

Daniel listened carefully.

"He said he knew what I found."

A pause.

"He said if I told anyone, he would destroy everything I loved."

Daniel's face tightened.

"He was already dying then."

Emma nodded.

"He knew his time was running out."

Michael looked down.

"He wanted the files destroyed before anyone could find them."

Daniel turned toward him.

"And you helped him."

Michael did not answer.

"You helped him."

Michael's shoulders dropped.

"I thought I was protecting the family."

Daniel stepped closer.

"You protected a monster."

The words broke something in Michael's expression.

"I was wrong."

Emma looked at him.

"Being wrong does not give me back five years."

Michael nodded slowly.

"I know."

The back door opened again.

Everyone turned.

This time, nobody spoke.

An older woman stood there.

Daniel immediately recognized her.

His mother.

Linda Carter.

She looked smaller than he remembered.

Older.

Tired.

Like she had been carrying the weight of the truth alone for years.

Daniel's face changed.

"Mom?"

Linda looked at Emma.

Then tears filled her eyes.

"Oh my God."

Emma stared at her.

For a moment, neither of them moved.

Then Linda stepped into the yard.

"I thought you were dead."

Emma's expression hardened.

"You wanted me to be."

Linda stopped.

The pain on her face was obvious.

"No."

Emma laughed quietly.

"That is what everyone says."

Linda shook her head.

"I tried to stop them."

Daniel looked at her.

"Who?"

Linda looked at him.

And Daniel saw the answer before she spoke.

"Your father."

Daniel felt his chest tighten.

"Mom, Dad is dead."

"I know."

Her voice broke.

"But the damage he left behind is still alive."

She walked closer.

"Daniel, there is something you need to know."

He looked at her.

"What?"

Linda glanced at Rachel.

Then Michael.

Then Emma.

Everyone seemed afraid of the next words.

"Your father did not act alone."

Daniel waited.

"He had someone inside the family helping him."

Emma looked at Rachel.

Rachel closed her eyes.

Daniel saw it.

The smallest reaction.

The smallest movement.

But it was enough.

"Rachel," he whispered.

She looked up.

"I never killed anyone."

Daniel felt his heart sink.

Because that was not a denial.

That was a confession of something else.

"What did you do?"

Rachel cried silently.

"I helped him hide the truth."

Emma looked away.

"And that was enough."

Daniel stepped back.

His entire life had been built on people protecting him from reality.

But now he finally saw the truth.

They had not protected him.

They had trapped him.

"Where are the files?" Daniel asked.

Nobody answered.

"Where are the files?"

Linda looked toward the house.

"In the place your father thought nobody would ever search."

Daniel followed her eyes.

"The basement."

Emma shook her head.

"No."

Everyone looked at her.

Her face had turned pale.

"He moved them."

Daniel frowned.

"How do you know?"

Emma looked toward the darkness beyond the backyard.

"Because the last thing your father said to me before they buried me was..."

She stopped.

Daniel waited.

"What?"

Emma whispered.

"He told me the truth was never inside the house."

The wind moved through the trees.

"He told me it was buried with someone else."

Daniel felt the words settle over him like another layer of earth.

The truth was no longer something hidden somewhere in old documents or forgotten rooms.

It was standing in front of him.

It was breathing.

It was looking at him through the faces of the people he loved.

"What does that mean?" Daniel asked.

Emma looked exhausted.

She had spent years waiting for someone to finally ask that question.

But now that it came, she looked afraid of the answer.

"It means your father knew someone would find the files eventually."

She swallowed.

"So he created a final hiding place."

Daniel looked around the backyard.

The house.

The trees.

The old fence.

Everything suddenly felt like a puzzle built by someone who wanted to confuse the people left behind.

"Where?" he asked.

Emma slowly looked toward the ground beneath them.

Daniel followed her eyes.

A terrible realization moved through him.

"No."

Emma nodded.

"Yes."

Michael stepped forward.

"Emma, don't."

She looked at him.

"Why?"

Her voice was calm.

"You already let them bury me once."

Michael looked away.

"You don't understand."

"I understand everything now."

Emma's voice shook.

"I understand that everyone had a reason."

She looked at Daniel.

"Everyone thought they were protecting someone."

Then she looked back at the house.

"But nobody protected me."

Daniel felt the anger inside him rise again.

He had spent years blaming himself.

He had wondered if he should have searched harder.

If he should have noticed something.

If he should have saved her.

But now he realized the truth was much worse.

Everyone around him had been working together to keep him from finding her.

"Where is it?" Daniel asked again.

Linda stepped forward.

"There was a place your father used to go."

Daniel looked at his mother.

"What place?"

She hesitated.

"The old family cemetery."

Daniel frowned.

"Our family cemetery?"

Linda nodded.

May you like

"He believed the dead were the safest people to hide things with."

A cold feeling moved through Daniel.
