Chương 5

"That's where he put the files?"
Emma shook her head.
"No."
Everyone looked at her.
"He didn't hide the files with the dead."
She looked directly at Daniel.
"He hid them with the person who was supposed to be forgotten."
Daniel's face changed.
"Who?"
Emma's eyes filled with sadness.
"Me."
Nobody spoke.
The backyard seemed frozen.
Daniel looked at her.
"What are you saying?"
Emma took a slow breath.
"When they took me away, they didn't just want me gone."
She looked at the ground.
"They wanted everyone to believe I disappeared."
Daniel felt sick.
"But you escaped."
Emma shook her head.
"No."
The answer shocked him.
"I didn't escape."
She looked toward Michael.
"He let me live."
Michael closed his eyes.
Daniel turned.
"What?"
Michael looked broken.
"After your father ordered it, I was supposed to make sure she never came back."
Daniel stared at him.
"But you didn't."
"No."
Michael's voice cracked.
"I couldn't do it."
Emma looked at him.
"He left me in that place because he was afraid of what your father would do if he found out."
Daniel looked between them.
"What place?"
Michael remained silent.
Emma answered.
"The abandoned farmhouse."
Daniel remembered.
The place everyone avoided.
The place his father owned.
The place nobody was allowed to enter.
"You were there for five years?"
Emma nodded.
Daniel looked away.
The pain on his face was impossible to hide.
Five years.
His sister had been alive less than an hour away.
Five years of birthdays.
Five years of holidays.
Five years of him believing she was gone.
"Why didn't you run?"
Emma looked at him.
"I tried."
Her voice became quiet.
"Many times."
"Then why didn't you?"
"Because your father planned for that."
She paused.
"There were people watching the property."
Daniel felt his hands tighten.
"He controlled everything."
Emma nodded.
"Even after he died."
Rachel spoke softly.
"That is what scared everyone."
Daniel turned toward her.
"What do you mean?"
Rachel looked at Emma.
"Your father left instructions."
Daniel stared.
"Instructions?"
"Messages."
Rachel wiped her face.
"Promises of what would happen if anyone exposed him."
Daniel felt his stomach turn.
"He planned this even after death?"
Rachel nodded.
"He knew people were afraid of him."
Emma looked toward the house.
"And he was right."
Nobody disagreed.
Daniel walked away a few steps.
He needed space.
But there was nowhere to go.
The entire property felt like a place where secrets were buried.
He looked at the house where he grew up.
The windows where he watched storms as a child.
The porch where his father taught him how to fix things.
The rooms where his family created memories.
Now he wondered how many of those memories were lies.
"Mom," Daniel said quietly.
Linda looked at him.
"Did you know?"
Her eyes filled with tears.
"Not at first."
"When did you find out?"
She looked down.
"After your father died."
Daniel turned.
"What did you find?"
Linda hesitated.
"A letter."
Michael looked at her.
"You never told us about the letter."
Linda shook her head.
"Because I was afraid."
Daniel stepped closer.
"What did it say?"
Linda's hands trembled.
"It said if Emma was ever found, the truth would destroy all of us."
Daniel stared at her.
"And you believed him?"
"I didn't know what to believe anymore."
Emma looked at Linda.
"But you knew I was alive."
Linda cried.
"Yes."
"How long?"
Linda closed her eyes.
"Four years."
Daniel felt another piece of himself break.
His mother knew.
For four years.
"Why?"
Linda looked at Emma.
"Because I tried to bring you home."
Emma's expression softened slightly.
"But you failed."
Linda nodded.
"I failed."
The honesty made the moment even heavier.
Daniel looked toward the road.
"We need to get Emma medical help."
Everyone nodded.
For a moment, the family stopped fighting.
The truth could wait.
Emma needed help.
Daniel helped her toward the house.
But as they reached the porch, Emma suddenly stopped.
Her body went tense.
Daniel looked at her.
"What?"
She stared at the front door.
Her face changed.
Fear returned.
"What's wrong?"
Emma whispered.
"I know that sound."
Daniel listened.
At first, he heard nothing.
Then he noticed it.
A faint humming noise.
Coming from inside the house.
Rachel's face went pale.
"No."
Daniel looked at her.
"What?"
Rachel stepped backward.
"That's impossible."
The humming continued.
A low mechanical sound.
Like an old recording device.
Emma's breathing became faster.
"He left something behind."
Daniel opened the door slowly.
The house was dark.
Silent.
Waiting.
Then a voice filled the hallway.
A voice Daniel had not heard in three years.
His father's voice.
"If you are hearing this..."
Everyone froze.
The recording continued.
"Then someone has finally failed to keep my secret."
Daniel felt every person around him stop breathing.
His father's voice remained calm.
Almost peaceful.
"But before you judge me..."
A pause.
"Remember this."
The lights flickered on.
"Nobody in this family is innocent."
The recording stopped.
And from somewhere deeper inside the house...
another sound began.
A phone ringing.
The phone kept ringing from somewhere inside the house.
Nobody moved.
The sound echoed through the hallway like a warning from the past.
Daniel stared into the darkness, unable to understand how his father's voice could still exist inside the home.
His father had been dead for three years.
But somehow, he had prepared for this moment.
"Don't answer it," Emma whispered.
Daniel looked at her.
"Why?"
Her face was filled with fear.
"Because he never left anything without a reason."
The phone continued ringing.
Rachel stepped closer to Daniel.
"We need to leave."
Daniel looked at her.
"Leave?"
His voice was filled with disbelief.
"My sister was buried alive, my family has been hiding secrets for years, and now my dead father is calling this house."
He looked toward the hallway.
"No."
He took a step forward.
"I'm done running from him."
Emma grabbed his arm.
"Daniel."
He looked back.
"What?"
She searched his face.
May you like
"Be careful."
Those two words scared him more than anything else.
