Chương 3

Daniel recognized the voice before he saw the person.

"Daniel?"

His blood ran cold.

It was his uncle Michael.

His father's younger brother.

The man who had stood beside him at Emma's funeral.

The man who had hugged him and said they would find justice someday.

Michael stepped into the backyard.

He stopped when he saw Emma standing there.

For the first time in Daniel's memory, his uncle looked completely terrified.

"She's alive," Michael whispered.

Emma stared at him.

Her face tightened with anger.

"You knew."

Michael looked away.

Daniel felt something inside him break.

Another person.

Another lie.

"You knew?" Daniel asked.

Michael said nothing.

"Answer me."

Michael slowly looked at him.

"I'm sorry."

Daniel laughed once.

It was a painful sound.

"You're sorry?"

He pointed toward Emma.

"She was buried alive."

Michael's face changed.

"I didn't know they were going to do that."

Emma stepped forward weakly.

"But you knew they were going to make me disappear."

Michael looked at her.

His silence was the answer.

Daniel felt sick.

His family had not fallen apart because of one terrible moment.

It had been built on years of choices.

Years of people deciding that protecting a secret mattered more than protecting a person.

"What did Emma find?" Daniel asked.

Michael looked at the house.

Then at Rachel.

Then at the ground.

"The truth about your father."

Daniel waited.

"The truth about why he was afraid of her."

Emma's eyes hardened.

"He wasn't afraid of me."

She looked at Daniel.

"He was afraid I would tell you who he really was."

Michael closed his eyes.

"Emma, stop."

"No."

Her voice grew stronger.

"I spent five years locked away because everyone was afraid of what would happen if Daniel knew."

Daniel stepped closer.

"Then tell me."

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

The entire backyard seemed to hold its breath.

Finally, Michael whispered the words Daniel never expected to hear.

"Your father didn't die naturally."

Daniel stared at him.

"What?"

Michael looked at Emma.

"He was killed."

The silence that followed felt endless.

Daniel shook his head.

"No."

Emma's eyes filled with tears.

"Daniel..."

"No."

He backed away.

"My father had a heart attack."

Michael looked down.

"That was the story we created."

Daniel felt the ground beneath him disappear.

"Who killed him?"

Emma looked at Rachel.

Rachel started crying.

And in that moment, Daniel understood the worst part.

The secret was not just about the past.

It was about the people standing beside him right now.

"The person who killed your father," Emma whispered, "is the reason I was buried."

Daniel stared at Emma, unable to understand the words he had just heard.

The person who killed his father was the reason she had been buried.

His mind searched for another explanation.

A mistake.

A misunderstanding.

Anything that would make the people around him innocent.

But the fear in their faces told him there was no easy answer.

"Who?" Daniel asked.

His voice was quiet.

Almost too quiet.

Rachel looked at the ground.

Michael stepped forward.

"Daniel, you need to understand something."

"No."

Daniel looked at him.

"I don't need another explanation."

He pointed toward Emma.

"I need the truth."

Emma watched her brother with tears in her eyes.

For years, she had imagined this moment.

She imagined telling Daniel everything.

She imagined him believing her.

But she never imagined how much pain it would cause him.

"It was not supposed to happen this way," Michael said.

Daniel laughed bitterly.

"Nothing in this family is ever supposed to happen."

He looked at Rachel.

"But somehow it always does."

Rachel wiped her tears.

"I never wanted anyone to get hurt."

Emma looked at her.

"You let them hurt me."

Rachel flinched.

The words landed harder than a scream.

"I was scared," Rachel whispered.

Emma shook her head.

"We were all scared."

She looked around the backyard.

"That is why they won."

Daniel looked between them.

"What are you talking about?"

Emma took a slow breath.

"The secret your father protected was not just about him."

She looked toward the house.

"It was about the entire family."

Daniel followed her gaze.

"When I found the documents in his office, I thought they were about money."

Michael looked away.

"But they were not."

Emma continued.

"They were records."

"Records of what?"

She hesitated.

"People he paid."

Daniel felt a cold wave move through him.

"Paid for what?"

Emma looked at Michael.

"To keep quiet."

Michael closed his eyes.

"Daniel..."

"No."

Daniel stepped closer.

"You don't get to say my name like that."

His voice trembled.

"You all watched me bury an empty coffin."

Nobody answered.

"You watched me spend five years wondering why my sister disappeared."

His eyes moved to Rachel.

"You watched me marry someone who knew the truth."

Rachel began crying.

"I didn't know everything."

Emma looked at her.

"But you knew enough."

Rachel shook her head.

"I knew your father was dangerous."

Daniel froze.

"Your father?"

Rachel swallowed.

"I knew what he was capable of."

Daniel stared at her.

"You knew my father was dangerous, and you still stayed?"

Rachel looked away.

"I was trying to survive."

The words hung in the air.

Daniel suddenly understood something.

Rachel was not just hiding a secret.

She was hiding from something.

"What did my father do to you?" Daniel asked.

Rachel looked at him.

Her expression changed.

For the first time that night, Daniel saw something beyond fear.

He saw shame.

"He threatened me."

The backyard became silent.

"When I found out what he was doing, I tried to leave."

Daniel looked confused.

"What did he do?"

Rachel took a shaky breath.

"Your father was involved in illegal business deals."

Michael interrupted.

"Enough."

Daniel turned toward him.

"No."

Michael stopped.

"You don't decide when this ends."

Emma looked at Daniel.

"Your father built his entire life around control."

She spoke slowly.

"He collected secrets about everyone around him."

Daniel remembered childhood moments that suddenly felt different.
