Chương 5

"No," Richard said quietly.

"They wanted Lily because she was proof."

"Proof of what?"

Richard looked at the photograph.

"That your family’s records were never destroyed."

The silence that followed was terrifying.

Emily looked at Alexander.

"You knew about this?"

Alexander’s expression broke.

"I knew pieces."

"Pieces?"

She shook her head.

"Everyone knew pieces except me."

Alexander looked ashamed.

"I was trying to find a way to tell you."

Emily laughed softly, but there was no happiness in it.

"You had five years."

He had no answer.

Victoria stepped closer.

"The night Lily disappeared, someone leaked information about your family."

Emily looked at her.

"And you were involved."

Victoria looked away.

"Yes."

The honesty surprised Emily.

Victoria continued.

"I helped move Lily because I thought I was protecting her."

Emily’s expression hardened.

"You helped take my child."

Victoria closed her eyes.

"I know."

"No."

Emily’s voice became colder.

"You don't know."

She pointed toward Lily.

"You don't know what it feels like to wake up every morning believing your child is gone."

"You don't know what it feels like to keep a room untouched because you cannot accept that nobody will ever sleep there again."

"You don't know what it feels like to hear another mother complain about a sleepless night and secretly wish you could have that problem."

Victoria’s eyes filled with regret.

"I know I cannot fix that."

"No."

Emily held Lily closer.

"You cannot."

The little girl looked between the adults, sensing the pain around her.

Emily immediately softened and knelt beside her.

"It's okay, sweetheart."

Lily whispered.

"Are they going to take me away again?"

The question broke everyone.

Emily pulled her into her arms.

"No one is taking you anywhere."

Her voice was firm.

"Not ever again."

Alexander looked at Lily with tears in his eyes.

For the first time, Emily saw the fear behind his silence.

He had not just been hiding a secret.

He had been afraid.

But fear did not excuse what he had done.

Later that afternoon, Emily took Lily away from the estate.

She did not return to the wedding venue.

She did not return to the home she shared with Alexander.

She went to her old apartment across the city.

The place she had kept exactly the same since the day Lily was declared gone.

The small bedroom remained untouched.

The walls still held faded decorations from when she was preparing for her baby.

Emily opened the door slowly.

Lily stood beside her and looked inside.

"This was my room?"

Emily nodded.

"Yes."

The little girl walked in carefully.

She touched the stuffed animals on the shelf.

She looked at the small bed.

"This was for me?"

Emily smiled through tears.

"Every single thing."

Lily picked up a small stuffed rabbit.

"I think I remember this."

Emily stopped.

"What do you remember?"

Lily held the rabbit close.

"A song."

Emily’s heart raced.

"What song?"

Lily quietly hummed a melody.

The same melody Emily used to sing before bedtime.

The same song she sang when Lily was a newborn.

Emily covered her mouth.

She had spent years believing those memories existed only in her mind.

But Lily remembered.

Somewhere deep inside, her daughter had remembered her.

That night, Emily sat beside Lily’s bed until she fell asleep.

She watched every breath.

Every movement.

She refused to close her eyes.

Because every time she looked away, some part of her feared she would wake up and lose her again.

Around midnight, her phone rang.

It was Alexander.

She stared at the screen for a long time before answering.

"What do you want?"

His voice sounded exhausted.

"I found something."

Emily remained silent.

"Something about Victoria."

She looked toward Lily.

"What?"

Alexander took a breath.

"She was not the person who planned everything."

Emily stood slowly.

"Then who was?"

A pause followed.

Then Alexander said a name.

A name that made Emily’s blood run cold.

"Your father."

Emily froze.

"My father died when I was twelve."

"I know."

"Then how?"

Alexander’s voice lowered.

"Because he never actually died."

The room became silent.

Emily looked at the sleeping child beside her.

Everything she believed about her past was changing.

Her family.

Her daughter.

Her marriage.

Her father.

Nothing was what she thought it was.

"Alexander, if this is another lie..."

"It's not."

His voice cracked.

"I saw him tonight."

Emily gripped the phone.

"Where?"

"At the old Carter estate."

The place Emily had not visited since childhood.

The place everyone told her had been abandoned after her father’s death.

Alexander continued.

"And Emily..."

She heard the fear in his voice.

"What?"

"He was not alone."

A cold feeling moved through her.

"Who was with him?"

Alexander answered quietly.

"Someone holding the same necklace your daughter wears."

Emily looked at the silver necklace around Lily’s neck.

The one that had been hidden for five years.

The one that carried the symbol everyone feared.

And for the first time, Emily wondered if finding Lily was not the end of the secret.

Maybe it was the moment the secret finally began.

Emily did not sleep that night.

She sat beside Lily’s bed as the city outside slowly became darker and quieter.

Every sound made her look toward the doorway.

Every shadow reminded her that the life she understood had been built on secrets.

She had spent years believing the worst thing that could happen to a mother was losing her child.

Now she realized there was something almost as painful.

Finding out the loss had been a lie.

The small silver necklace rested on the table beside her.

Emily stared at the symbol engraved on the back.

For years, she had thought it represented love.

Now it represented questions.

At 5:30 in the morning, she made a decision.

She was going to the Carter estate.

Not because she trusted Alexander.

Not because she believed Richard.

May you like

Not because she wanted answers from people who had already stolen the truth from her once.

She was going because Lily deserved to know where she came from.
