Chương 2

Alexander stepped forward.

"I never stopped loving you."

Emily looked at him.

The sadness in her eyes was deeper than anger.

"Love is not enough when someone takes away the truth."

The little girl slowly lifted her head.

"Mommy, are you staying this time?"

That question destroyed the last piece of Emily’s anger.

She touched Lily’s face gently.

"I am never leaving you again."

The guests watched as the bride, still wearing her wedding gown and holding the daughter she thought she had lost, stood in the center of the ballroom.

The wedding ring on her hand suddenly felt heavier.

The promise she cared about was no longer the one she was supposed to make at the altar.

It was the promise she was making to the little girl who had found her way back home.

And as the chandeliers continued to shine above them, everyone in that room understood one thing.

The most shocking moment of the wedding was not a betrayal.

It was the return of a love that had been taken away for far too long.

The most shocking moment of the wedding was not a betrayal.

It was the return of a love that had been taken away for far too long.

But for Emily Carter, finding Lily again was only the beginning of discovering how deep the deception truly went.

The ballroom slowly began to empty as guests left in whispers, carrying pieces of a secret they had witnessed but barely understood.

The beautiful decorations remained untouched.

The white roses still surrounded the altar.

The crystal chandeliers still illuminated the room.

But the celebration that was supposed to mark a new beginning had become the place where Emily’s old life was shattered and rebuilt at the same time.

Emily refused to leave with Alexander.

Not yet.

She sat in a private room connected to the ballroom with Lily beside her, still wearing the white flower-girl dress that had changed everything.

The little girl refused to let go of Emily’s hand.

Every few seconds, she looked up as if she needed to make sure Emily was still there.

Emily noticed every small detail.

The way Lily rubbed her fingers together when she was nervous.

The way she tilted her head when she listened.

The way she smiled when Emily brushed a strand of hair away from her face.

Those were things Emily had missed without even knowing she was missing them.

Five years of bedtime stories.

Five years of birthday candles.

Five years of watching her daughter grow through someone else’s eyes.

The pain was almost too heavy to hold.

But Lily’s small hand gave her the strength to keep going.

"Mommy?" Lily whispered.

Emily looked down immediately.

"Yes, sweetheart?"

"Did you look for me?"

The question was simple.

But it cut deeper than anything else that night.

Emily swallowed the tears building in her eyes.

"Every single day."

Lily studied her face.

"Then why did they say you didn't want me?"

Emily froze.

The room became silent.

She slowly looked toward the door where Alexander stood outside.

His face changed when he heard those words.

Emily felt something inside her break.

Someone had not only taken her daughter away.

Someone had made Lily believe she was unwanted.

"Who told you that?" Emily asked gently.

Lily looked down.

"Grandpa said you had a new life and you didn't need me anymore."

Emily closed her eyes.

The anger inside her was controlled only by the fact that Lily was watching her.

Richard Reed had not just hidden a child.

He had rewritten a child's understanding of love.

Alexander stepped into the room.

"Emily..."

She immediately turned toward him.

"Don't."

Her voice was quiet, but the pain behind it was impossible to ignore.

"How long?"

Alexander stopped.

"How long did you know she was alive?"

He looked away.

The silence answered before his words did.

"Since the accident."

Emily stared at him.

Her expression changed from heartbreak to disbelief.

"Since the accident?"

She stood slowly.

"You knew for five years?"

Alexander looked like a man carrying a weight he could no longer hide.

"I thought if I told you, you would never be safe."

Emily shook her head.

"Safe?"

Her voice trembled.

"You kept my daughter from me because you thought that was safer?"

Alexander stepped closer.

"There were people trying to use Lily against us."

"Then you should have protected both of us."

Her words stopped him.

Because he knew she was right.

Five years earlier, Alexander’s family empire had been involved in a dangerous legal battle.

Powerful enemies had threatened everything they owned.

Richard believed that hiding Lily would remove the target from Emily’s back.

But the decision had destroyed the very family he claimed to protect.

Emily walked toward the window.

Outside, the city lights reflected against the glass.

She could see her own reflection.

A woman wearing a wedding dress.

A woman who had walked into a ballroom believing she knew her future.

A woman who walked out knowing she had been living inside someone else’s lie.

"I planned my entire life around a goodbye," Emily whispered.

Alexander lowered his head.

"I know."

"No, you don't."

She turned around.

"You don't know what it feels like to hold a baby one day and be told she is gone the next."

"You don't know what it feels like to walk past a child's bedroom every morning knowing it will never have toys in it again."

"You don't know what it feels like to wonder if you did something wrong."

Her voice cracked.

"I blamed myself."

Alexander’s expression collapsed.

"I know."

Emily looked at him with tears in her eyes.

"That is the worst part."

The room fell silent.

Lily slowly walked toward Emily and wrapped her arms around her waist.

Emily immediately knelt down and held her.

The anger inside her remained.

The questions remained.

The damage remained.

May you like

But her daughter was finally in her arms.

And that was the one thing no one could take away again.
