Chương 3

The next morning, the story had already spread.
News reporters gathered outside the Reed estate.
Everyone wanted to know why a wedding had ended with a missing child being revealed.
But Emily did not care about headlines.
She cared about Lily.
She cared about rebuilding five years that could never be returned.
She spent the morning sitting with Lily in a quiet garden behind the estate.
The little girl played with fallen flowers while Emily watched every movement.
"You like roses?" Emily asked.
Lily nodded.
"They remind me of you."
Emily smiled sadly.
"Why?"
"Because Grandma said roses can survive storms."
Emily looked at her.
"What else did Grandma say?"
Lily became quiet.
Emily noticed immediately.
"Sweetheart?"
Lily looked down at the flowers.
"She said I wasn't supposed to tell you about the necklace."
Emily’s heart stopped.
"What necklace?"
Lily reached into the small pocket of her dress.
From inside, she pulled out a delicate silver necklace.
Emily recognized it instantly.
Her hand moved to her mouth.
It was the necklace she had placed around her newborn daughter’s neck the day Lily was born.
The one she thought had disappeared forever.
"Where did you get this?"
Lily smiled.
"Grandpa kept it."
Emily touched the necklace with shaking fingers.
Another secret.
Another piece of the truth.
The necklace had a small engraved symbol on the back.
A symbol from Emily’s own family.
A symbol that should have meant nothing to the Reed family.
But Richard had kept it hidden.
Why?
Before Emily could ask, her phone began ringing.
The name on the screen made her expression change.
It was the doctor who had treated Lily five years earlier.
The doctor who had signed the papers confirming the tragedy Emily believed had happened.
Emily answered slowly.
"Hello?"
A long silence followed.
Then the doctor spoke.
"Emily, I know you just discovered Lily is alive."
Emily’s eyes narrowed.
"How do you know that?"
The doctor hesitated.
"Because I was there when they took her."
Emily felt the world shift beneath her.
She looked at Lily playing peacefully in the garden.
The doctor continued.
"And there is something I should have told you five years ago."
Emily gripped the phone tighter.
"What?"
The doctor’s voice became heavy.
"Your daughter was never in an accident."
The words struck Emily harder than anything she had heard that night.
She stood frozen in the garden, the phone pressed against her ear, unable to process what the doctor had just revealed.
The warm morning sunlight around her suddenly felt cold.
Lily continued playing nearby, unaware that another piece of her stolen past was about to be uncovered.
Emily lowered her voice.
"What do you mean she was never in an accident?"
The doctor took a long breath.
"I mean the report was false."
Emily closed her eyes.
For five years, she had carried the pain of a tragedy that had never happened.
For five years, she had buried a daughter who was still alive.
"Who changed the report?" she asked.
The doctor hesitated.
"Emily, there are things I should have told you before."
Her hand tightened around the phone.
"Tell me now."
The silence on the other end lasted several seconds.
Then the doctor spoke.
"Your daughter was brought into the hospital that night."
Emily looked toward Lily.
"She was alive?"
"Yes."
Her knees almost gave out.
She sat down slowly on the garden bench.
"Then what happened?"
The doctor’s voice became quieter.
"Someone arrived before the police could complete their investigation."
Emily already knew the answer before hearing the name.
"Richard Reed?"
The doctor did not respond immediately.
That was enough.
Emily felt a wave of anger rise through her chest.
"He took my daughter."
The doctor finally spoke.
"He told everyone it was for her protection."
Emily looked at Lily again.
The little girl was carefully arranging white flowers in a small circle on the grass.
She looked peaceful.
She looked safe.
But Emily knew now that her safety had been built on years of lies.
"What else don't I know?" Emily asked.
The doctor paused.
"Your daughter was not the only person they were trying to hide."
Emily frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Before the doctor could answer, the call suddenly ended.
Emily stared at the screen.
The connection was gone.
She immediately called back.
No answer.
A feeling of fear moved through her.
Not fear for herself.
Fear for the truth.
Because every time someone tried to hide something, it meant there was something they were desperate to protect.
"Mommy?"
Emily looked up.
Lily stood in front of her holding a small white flower.
"Are you sad?"
Emily forced a gentle smile.
She opened her arms.
Lily ran into them without hesitation.
Emily held her daughter tightly.
"I am happy you're here."
Lily rested her head against Emily’s shoulder.
"Are we going home?"
The question made Emily pause.
Home.
A word that suddenly had a different meaning.
The Reed estate was not her home.
The wedding ballroom was not her future.
The only place that felt real was wherever Lily was.
"Yes," Emily whispered.
"We are going home."
Later that afternoon, Emily packed only what belonged to her.
She left the wedding dress hanging in the private suite.
She left the flowers.
She left the ring on the table.
Alexander watched silently from the doorway as she placed Lily’s small belongings into a bag.
"You are really leaving."
Emily did not look at him.
"I need answers."
"I can give you answers."
She turned around.
"No."
Her voice was calm.
"I need the truth."
Alexander looked away.
The difference between those two words hurt because he knew exactly what she meant.
He had given her explanations.
He had given her excuses.
But he had not given her the truth.
Emily walked past him with Lily holding her hand.
At the entrance of the estate, a black car waited.
Richard stood nearby.

For the first time, he did not look like a powerful businessman.
He looked like an old man who knew he had destroyed something precious.
