Chương 6

"I don't care who he belongs to biologically."

His voice was quiet.

Emma looked at him.

Daniel continued.

"But I need to know who tried to take him away from us."

Margaret nodded.

"Then we need to find David."

Daniel looked at the photograph again.

His father.

Michael.

The hidden truth.

The missing pieces.

Everything connected to a secret that started before Noah was even born.

Then Daniel noticed something on the back of the photograph.

A handwritten message.

Something he had not seen before.

He turned it over slowly.

The writing was only one sentence.

His face changed as he read it.

Emma noticed immediately.

"What does it say?"

Daniel looked up.

His voice was filled with disbelief.

"It says David didn't act alone."

The room went silent.

Margaret stepped closer.

"Who else?"

Daniel stared at the words.

Then he slowly answered.

"Someone who has been watching Noah since the day he was born."

Daniel read the sentence again, hoping somehow the words would change.

They did not.

The handwriting remained clear.

The meaning remained impossible.

Someone who has been watching Noah since the day he was born.

The kitchen fell into a silence so deep that even the sound of the rain seemed distant.

Emma looked at Daniel’s face and immediately knew the discovery was worse than anything before.

"Who?"

Her voice was barely a whisper.

Daniel looked at Margaret.

Then at Emma.

"I don't know."

Margaret reached for the photograph.

"Let me see."

Daniel handed it to her.

The older woman studied the writing carefully.

Her expression changed almost instantly.

"You recognize it."

Daniel noticed.

"Mom."

Margaret looked up.

"It is your father's handwriting."

The words felt like another blow.

Daniel stepped back.

"My father wrote this?"

Margaret nodded slowly.

"But when?"

She turned the photograph over.

There was a date written beneath the message.

Three days before Richard Carter died.

Daniel stared at the date.

His mind started racing.

Three days before his father’s death.

Three days before everything in the family changed forever.

"Why would he write this and hide it?"

Margaret looked troubled.

"Because he knew someone was dangerous."

Emma moved closer.

"Someone in the family?"

Margaret did not answer.

That silence was enough.

Daniel looked toward the baby.

His expression became protective.

The same instinct that had guided him since the day Noah was born returned stronger than ever.

Someone had been watching this child.

Someone had been controlling information.

Someone had been moving pieces around their lives like they were part of a game.

"How did Michael get this photograph?"

Daniel asked.

Margaret looked at Emma.

Emma shook her head.

"I don't know."

Daniel looked at the letter again.

"Michael knew more than he told us."

"Yes," Margaret said quietly.

"And he was trying to leave evidence behind."

Daniel walked around the kitchen slowly.

His thoughts moved faster than he could organize them.

His father.

His uncle.

Michael.

The hospital records.

The DNA test.

Noah.

Everything felt connected.

But there was one thing he could not understand.

"If David was involved, why leave the country?"

Margaret answered carefully.

"Because he knew someone was getting close."

Daniel looked at her.

"You mean you?"

Margaret nodded.

"I started investigating after Richard died."

Emma looked surprised.

"You never told me."

"I didn't want you involved."

Emma’s expression changed.

"Margaret, I was already involved."

The older woman looked at her sadly.

"I know."

For the first time that night, the two women looked less like enemies and more like two people who had both been trapped by the same secret.

Daniel noticed.

He realized he had spent months believing everyone had chosen to lie to him.

But maybe they had all been afraid of something bigger.

"Where did you find the hospital records?"

Daniel asked.

Margaret looked toward the hallway.

"In Richard’s private office."

"Are they still there?"

"No."

"Why?"

"Because someone broke into the house after I found them."

Daniel froze.

"When?"

"Two months ago."

Emma looked shocked.

"Why didn't you tell us?"

Margaret looked at her.

"Because I knew whoever did it was still watching."

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

"Did they take anything?"

"Only one thing."

"What?"

"The original documents."

The room went quiet.

Daniel looked at the photograph again.

"But they missed this."

Margaret nodded.

"Because I had already hidden it."

Daniel looked at the evidence spread across the counter.

The pieces were beginning to form.

Someone wanted the truth buried.

Someone wanted them confused.

Someone wanted them fighting each other instead of searching for answers.

Then Daniel’s phone vibrated.

The sudden sound made everyone turn.

He looked at the screen.

Unknown number.

Nobody spoke.

Daniel answered.

"Hello?"

At first, there was only silence.

Then a voice came through.

A voice he recognized immediately.

His face changed.

"Daniel."

The voice was older.

Tired.

Afraid.

It belonged to someone he thought he would never hear from again.

"Uncle David?"

Emma and Margaret looked at each other.

Daniel walked away from the kitchen island.

"Where are you?"

A long pause followed.

"I don't have much time."

Daniel’s grip tightened around the phone.

"You need to explain everything."

"I know."

"Why did you change the records?"

Silence.

Then David spoke.

"I didn't."

Daniel stopped.

"What?"

"I didn't change anything."

Margaret looked confused.

Daniel turned toward her.

"Then who did?"

David’s breathing became heavier.

"Your father."

Daniel felt his stomach drop.

"My father?"

"Richard changed the records because he thought he was protecting you."

Daniel closed his eyes.

The same explanation again.

Protecting him.

Everyone had used that word.

Everyone had damaged him while claiming they were saving him.

"Stop saying that."

His voice became angry.

"Everyone keeps saying they protected me."

David was quiet.

"Daniel, you don't understand."

"No."

Daniel looked at Noah.

"I understand perfectly."

"You all decided I didn't deserve the truth."

David’s voice softened.

"I deserved your anger."

Daniel said nothing.

"But if you want to know what happened, you need to find the original file."

"Where is it?"

May you like

Another pause.

Then David answered.
