Chương 2

It was not anger.

It was fear.

Margaret had placed an old envelope on the table beside Emma’s bed.

Inside was information that could destroy two families.

At first, Emma refused to believe it.

She thought it was impossible.

She thought someone had made a mistake.

But the documents were real.

The names were real.

The dates were real.

And the truth was more painful than any lie she had ever told.

Margaret had begged her not to tell Daniel immediately.

Not because she wanted to protect herself.

Because she believed Daniel would lose everything if the truth came out at the wrong moment.

Emma remembered looking down at the newborn baby and feeling completely lost.

The child had no blame.

The child had no understanding of betrayal or secrets.

He only needed someone to love him.

That was when Emma made the decision that changed all their lives.

She would protect the baby.

She would protect Daniel.

She would carry the pain alone.

But secrets never disappear.

They only wait for the right moment to reveal themselves.

And now that moment had arrived.

Daniel slowly lowered the phone.

His eyes were fixed on Emma, searching for the woman he thought he knew.

"Was anything between us real?"

The question hurt more than any accusation.

Emma’s face broke with emotion.

"Every moment with you was real."

"Every day I loved you was real."

Daniel looked away, trying to control his emotions.

Margaret finally stepped forward.

"Daniel, there is more you need to know."

Emma immediately looked at her.

"Please."

But Margaret did not stop.

The older woman’s expression softened slightly.

"The truth was never only about the baby."

Daniel turned back toward his mother.

"What does that mean?"

Margaret looked at Emma.

For the first time, her confidence disappeared.

"It means someone else has been lying too."

The room went completely still.

Emma felt the baby move gently against her chest.

Daniel looked between the two women, realizing the secret was much larger than he imagined.

Outside, the rain continued falling against the windows.

Inside the kitchen, a family stood on the edge of losing everything they believed was true.

Daniel stared at his mother, unable to understand the meaning behind her words.

The kitchen that had once been filled with laughter, family dinners, and quiet conversations now felt like a courtroom where every person was waiting for a verdict.

"What are you talking about?" Daniel asked.

His voice carried fear now, not anger.

Margaret looked down for a moment, as if gathering the courage to open a door that could never be closed again.

"There are things you were never told about the night your son was born."

Emma immediately felt her stomach tighten.

She knew Margaret was about to reveal everything.

"Margaret, stop."

Her voice was soft, but the desperation behind it was clear.

The older woman looked at her with sadness.

"You have carried this burden alone for too long."

Daniel looked at Emma again.

"Why does my mother know more about my child than I do?"

Emma felt the question sink deeper than anything else.

Because there was no easy answer.

Because every explanation would sound like another excuse.

Because the truth had too many pieces, and every piece had the power to hurt someone.

"I wanted to tell you," Emma whispered.

"Every day, I wanted to tell you."

Daniel shook his head slowly.

"But you didn't."

The words were quiet.

That made them more painful.

Emma lowered her eyes.

"No."

Daniel looked at the baby in her arms.

The anger he expected to feel never fully arrived.

Instead, there was a terrible emptiness.

He loved this child.

He had held him through sleepless nights.

He had learned how to warm bottles, change diapers, and calm him when he cried.

He had imagined teaching him how to ride a bike.

He had imagined standing beside him on his first day of school.

The thought that someone had hidden the truth from him felt impossible to accept.

"Did you ever look at me and feel guilty?" Daniel asked.

Emma’s lips parted, but she struggled to find the right words.

"Yes."

The honesty surprised him.

She took a shaky breath.

"Every single day."

Daniel turned away.

The answer hurt because it was exactly what he feared.

Margaret walked closer and placed her hands together.

"There is something you need to understand."

Daniel looked at her.

"Then tell me."

Margaret’s eyes moved toward the baby.

"Emma did not create this situation."

Daniel frowned.

"What does that mean?"

"It means she discovered the truth after the baby was born."

Emma looked at Margaret, remembering the night everything changed.

Daniel noticed the reaction between them.

"You both knew?"

The silence answered before either woman could.

His face changed.

A mixture of disbelief and betrayal crossed his features.

"You both knew."

Emma stepped forward.

"Daniel, please listen to me."

"No."

He raised his hand slightly, stopping her.

"I have spent three months believing I was living the happiest moment of my life."

His voice cracked slightly.

"I thought becoming a father finally gave me everything I always wanted."

Emma’s eyes filled with tears.

"You are his father."

Daniel looked at her.

"But am I?"

The question stayed in the air.

Emma felt the pain behind it.

She knew Daniel was not only asking about biology.

He was asking if his love had been real.

If the memories they created meant anything.

If the family he protected every day was something he had imagined.

The baby suddenly began to make a small crying sound.

Emma immediately held him closer.

Her entire body reacted before her mind did.

Daniel watched the movement.

For a brief second, he saw the woman he fell in love with.

The woman who stayed awake beside him when he was sick.

The woman who always put others before herself.

The woman who was now terrified of losing everything.

His anger weakened.

May you like

But the pain remained.

"Who is he?" Daniel asked.
