Chương 5
Daniel stepped closer.
"You keep saying that."
His voice became sharper.
"But everyone keeps deciding what I can handle."
Emma looked at him with sadness.
"Daniel..."
He turned toward her.
"No."
The pain in his eyes stopped her.
"Please don't protect me anymore."
The words hurt because she knew they were true.
She had spent months protecting him from the truth.
But now she understood that hiding pain did not remove it.
It only delayed the moment when it would hurt even more.
Margaret walked toward the kitchen window.
The rain reflected against the glass behind her.
"When Richard died, I thought the worst thing I would ever have to face was losing my husband."
She paused.
"I was wrong."
Daniel watched her carefully.
"After his funeral, I found documents in his office."
"What documents?"
"Records."
Margaret swallowed.
"Hospital records."
Emma immediately felt cold.
The room seemed to become smaller.
Daniel noticed her reaction.
"You knew?"
Emma shook her head quickly.
"No."
Her voice trembled.
"I knew there was something wrong, but I never knew this."
Margaret looked at Emma.
"That is why I believed you."
Daniel looked between them.
"Explain."
Margaret returned to the counter.
"Richard had access to certain people through his business connections."
Daniel’s expression darkened.
"Are you saying my father used his influence to change something?"
Margaret nodded slowly.
"Yes."
Daniel looked at Noah.
His eyes filled with confusion.
"But why?"
Nobody answered immediately.
Because the answer was the most painful part.
Finally, Margaret spoke.
"Because Richard believed he was protecting you."
Daniel looked disgusted.
"Protecting me?"
"Yes."
"By destroying my life?"
Margaret lowered her eyes.
"He thought he was preventing a scandal."
Daniel laughed once, but there was no humor in it.
"A scandal?"
His voice cracked.
"My entire family was built on a lie, and he called that protection?"
Margaret had no response.
Because there was no defense.
There was only regret.
Emma stepped closer to Daniel.
"Your father wasn't the only one responsible."
Daniel looked at her.
"What do you mean?"
She took a shaky breath.
"Michael found out before I did."
Daniel remembered the letter.
"He tried to tell you."
Emma nodded.
"But he disappeared before he could."
"Why?"
Emma looked at Margaret.
The older woman answered.
"Because Richard threatened him."
Daniel froze.
"My father threatened Michael?"
"Yes."
Margaret’s voice became quieter.
"He told Michael that if he revealed the truth, everyone he cared about would suffer."
Daniel looked down at the letter in his hand.
"So Michael ran."
"No."
Emma’s voice was soft.
"He stayed away because he thought he was protecting me and Noah."
Daniel looked at her.
"You still cared about him."
The accusation was not angry.
It was wounded.
Emma immediately shook her head.
"Not the way you think."
"Then what way?"
"Michael was someone from my past."
She looked toward Noah.
"But you were my future."
Daniel looked away.
The words affected him, but they did not erase the pain.
"I need to understand something."
Emma nodded.
"What?"
"When you found out about Noah..."
She waited.
"Did you ever believe I wasn't his father?"
Emma’s eyes filled with tears.
"No."
The answer came immediately.
Daniel looked at her.
"I never cared about biology."
She touched the baby’s blanket gently.
"I cared about the fact that you were the person who stayed."
"You were the person who held him before you even knew the truth."
"You were the person who loved him without hesitation."
Daniel’s expression softened slightly.
But then the doubt returned.
"Then why did you let me believe something else?"
Emma looked down.
"Because I was afraid."
"Of what?"
"Losing you."
The honesty made the room quiet.
"I had already lost so much."
Emma’s voice shook.
"I lost the person I thought I could trust."
"I lost the future I imagined."
"When you came into my life, you gave me something I thought I would never have again."
Daniel looked at her.
"Hope?"
She nodded.
"Yes."
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Daniel looked at Margaret.
"Who changed the records?"
Margaret’s face became tense again.
She knew the question was coming.
She knew she could no longer avoid it.
"I don't know for certain."
Daniel stared at her.
"But you have an idea."
Margaret hesitated.
"There was only one person who had access to Richard’s private files."
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
"Who?"
Margaret looked at the floor.
"Your uncle."
The name immediately changed the atmosphere.
Daniel stepped back.
"My uncle David?"
Margaret nodded.
Daniel shook his head.
"No."
David Carter had always been the quiet member of the family.
The person who rarely spoke during arguments.
The person who helped run the company after Richard’s death.
The person everyone trusted.
"Why would he do that?"
Margaret looked at the documents.
"Because he had something to gain."
Daniel’s face hardened.
"The company."
Margaret nodded.
After Richard died, David had become the temporary head of the family business.
Daniel remembered how quickly everything had changed.
How David had insisted he was not ready to take responsibility.
How he had always told Daniel that family mattered more than money.
Suddenly, those words felt different.
"Where is he now?"
Margaret looked at him.
"Daniel..."
"Where is he?"
"He left the country two months ago."
Daniel went silent.
Emma felt fear growing inside her.
"Why didn't you tell anyone?"
Margaret looked at her.
"Because I didn't have proof."
Daniel held up the letter.
"And now?"
Margaret looked at the evidence on the counter.
"Now we might."
Daniel looked at Noah.
The baby was sleeping peacefully, unaware that adults were fighting over the truth of his existence.
Daniel slowly reached toward him.
For a moment, he hesitated.
Then he gently touched the baby’s hand.
The small fingers wrapped around his finger.
His expression changed.
All the pain was still there.
The betrayal was still there.
But so was love.
Because no secret could erase three months of being a father.
May you like
No lie could erase every night he spent comforting this child.
No document could erase the bond he had created.
