Chương 4

Richard Carter had been known as a successful businessman.

A man who built his company from nothing.

A man who taught Daniel that reputation was everything.

"He wasn't the man everyone thought he was," Margaret said.

Daniel looked away.

The image of his father was suddenly becoming harder to recognize.

"What does this have to do with Michael?"

Margaret looked at Emma.

Then she looked back at Daniel.

"Michael was the person who knew the truth."

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

"What truth?"

"Your father made mistakes."

"Everyone makes mistakes."

Margaret nodded.

"But some mistakes destroy lives."

The kitchen became silent again.

Emma remembered the first time Margaret told her this story.

She remembered sitting in the hospital room with Noah sleeping beside her.

She remembered feeling like every piece of her life had been connected to a secret she never asked for.

"Michael found out your father had been hiding money from the company," Margaret continued.

"He discovered documents that proved Richard had been involved in illegal deals."

Daniel looked shocked.

"My father?"

Margaret nodded.

"He was afraid."

"Of what?"

"Of losing everything."

Daniel looked at the photograph.

"So Michael knew."

"Yes."

"And what does that have to do with Noah?"

Margaret hesitated.

That hesitation frightened Daniel more than anything else.

"Michael wanted to tell you the truth."

Daniel looked at Emma.

"About my father?"

Margaret shook her head.

"About everything."

Emma lowered her eyes.

Daniel noticed.

"You knew this too."

Emma nodded.

"Only after Noah was born."

"How?"

Emma took a deep breath.

"Because Michael left me a letter."

Daniel stared at her.

"A letter?"

She nodded.

"He knew he might not have the chance to explain everything himself."

Daniel looked at the envelope.

"Where is it?"

Emma reached into her purse.

Her hands trembled as she pulled out a folded piece of paper.

She had carried it with her every day since receiving it.

Not because she wanted to hide it.

Because she had been afraid of what would happen when it was finally opened.

Daniel took the letter.

For a moment, he did not move.

Then he unfolded it.

The handwriting immediately made him emotional.

He recognized it.

Michael’s handwriting.

A friend who had disappeared.

A person he once trusted.

A person he believed had betrayed him.

Daniel began reading silently.

His eyes moved across the page.

Then his expression slowly changed.

The anger faded.

Confusion replaced it.

Then pain.

"What does it say?" Emma whispered.

Daniel did not answer immediately.

He kept reading.

Finally, he spoke.

"He knew."

Margaret looked at him.

"He knew what?"

Daniel looked up.

"He knew Noah wasn't just a secret."

His voice shook.

"He knew someone was trying to take him away from us."

Emma’s face went pale.

"What?"

Daniel looked back at the letter.

"Michael wrote that Richard was not only hiding financial crimes."

The room felt colder.

"He was hiding something about Noah."

Emma stepped closer.

"What are you saying?"

Daniel looked at her.

"I don't know yet."

Margaret stood up quickly.

"Let me see that."

Daniel pulled the letter away.

"No."

His voice was firm.

"You kept this from me."

Margaret stopped.

"You don't get to decide what I can handle anymore."

The words hurt her.

But she accepted them.

Because he was right.

She had spent years protecting him from pain.

She never realized that protection could become another kind of betrayal.

Daniel continued reading.

Then he reached the final lines.

His face changed completely.

"What?"

Emma immediately noticed.

"What does it say?"

Daniel looked at her.

His eyes filled with disbelief.

"It says Michael wasn't Noah's father."

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

The rain outside suddenly sounded louder.

Emma stared at him.

"What did you say?"

Daniel slowly lowered the letter.

"It says Michael wanted to protect you because he discovered the truth."

Margaret stepped forward.

"What truth?"

Daniel looked at both women.

His voice was barely a whisper.

"The DNA test was changed."

Emma felt like the room disappeared around her.

"No."

Daniel looked at her.

"Michael wrote that someone switched the hospital records."

Margaret covered her mouth.

For the first time, real fear appeared on her face.

"That can't be possible."

Daniel looked at his mother.

"Can it?"

Margaret did not answer.

And that silence was enough.

Emma felt her knees weaken.

She grabbed the counter for support.

All this time, she believed the secret was about Noah’s father.

She believed the pain came from one impossible mistake.

But now she was realizing something much darker.

Someone had manipulated the truth from the beginning.

Someone had wanted them to believe a lie.

Daniel looked toward the baby.

His expression softened with confusion and heartbreak.

"If Michael wasn't his father..."

He stopped.

He could not finish the sentence.

Emma whispered the words he could not say.

"Then who is?"

Nobody had an answer.

But the fear in Margaret’s eyes suggested she already knew.

Daniel noticed.

His heart sank.

"Mom."

Margaret looked at him.

"Tell me you don't know."

The older woman remained silent.

Daniel stepped closer.

"Tell me."

Margaret’s lips trembled.

"I was hoping I would never have to tell you this."

Daniel’s face tightened.

"Tell me."

Margaret looked toward Noah.

Then back at her son.

"The person who changed the records..."

She paused.

"The person who knew the truth from the beginning..."

Her voice broke.

"Was someone inside this family."

Daniel felt the air leave his lungs.

For a moment, he could only hear the sound of his own heartbeat.

The words from his mother repeated in his mind.

Someone inside this family.

He looked around the kitchen, at the people standing in front of him, and suddenly every memory felt different.

Every conversation.

Every strange silence.

Every moment he had ignored because he trusted the people he loved.

"What are you saying?"

His voice was low, but everyone could hear the fear behind it.

Margaret looked away.

That was the answer he did not want.

"Mom."

May you like

She closed her eyes.

"I never wanted you to find out this way."
