Chương 6

“This.”
Ethan glanced at it.
Then he sighed.
“I was hoping that would stay buried.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“You ruined their lives.”
Ethan looked at him.
“And who are you?”
“The person who stopped him from making things worse.”
Ethan smiled slightly.
“You think you understand what happened here?”
Daniel did not respond.
Because he knew he did not know everything.
But he knew enough.
He knew a woman had been tied up.
He knew a man had been consumed by anger.
And he knew Ethan was connected to the reason why.
Victor walked closer.
“You let me blame Clara.”
Ethan looked at him.
“Yes.”
The simple answer shocked everyone.
Victor stopped.
“You admit it?”
Ethan shrugged.
“You wanted someone to blame.”
The words hit Victor harder than expected.
“Because you were grieving.”
Ethan continued.
“Because you needed the pain to have a face.”
Victor’s hands tightened.
“You manipulated me.”
“Yes.”
Ethan’s honesty was almost worse than a lie.
Robert stepped forward.
“You destroyed evidence.”
Ethan looked at him.
“You should have been more careful.”
Robert’s expression hardened.
“You knew I was close.”
“I knew you were asking too many questions.”
Victor looked between them.
“How much did you hide?”
Ethan smiled faintly.
“Enough.”
Clara looked at him.
Her voice was quiet.
“You watched me suffer.”
Ethan looked at her.
“I watched you survive.”
The cruelty of the statement made Daniel angry.
“You call that survival?”
Ethan looked around the garage.
“This family was already broken.”
He pointed toward Victor.
“He just needed a reason.”
Victor stared at him.
“You used my grief.”
Ethan nodded.
“Yes.”
The admission filled the room.
Victor looked like he had been struck.
All those years.
All that anger.
Every decision he made had been influenced by someone who understood his pain better than anyone else.
Ethan moved closer to the car.
“You should be thanking me.”
Nobody believed what they heard.
Victor’s expression changed.
“For what?”
“For giving you something to focus on.”
Ethan looked toward Clara.
“If you had not blamed her, you would have blamed yourself.”
The words were manipulative.
But for a moment, Victor felt the truth hidden inside them.
That was the most dangerous part.
Ethan knew exactly where his wounds were.
“You always knew how to control people,” Robert said.
Ethan looked at him.
“And you always thought you were smarter than everyone.”
Robert ignored the insult.
“You killed Victor’s brother.”
The room became silent.
Victor looked at Ethan.
“No.”
Ethan did not answer.
That silence was enough.
Victor stepped closer.
“Did you?”
Ethan looked at him calmly.
“You still think the world is simple.”
Victor’s voice became stronger.
“Did you kill him?”
Ethan looked toward the recording device.
Then back at Victor.
“Your brother made choices.”
Victor’s face hardened.
“That is not an answer.”
Ethan sighed.
“No.”
The single word changed everything.
Victor stopped breathing.
Clara covered her mouth.
Daniel felt the weight of the confession.
“No, I did not physically kill him.”
Ethan continued.
“But I made sure he could not expose what he found.”
Victor stared.
“What does that mean?”
Ethan walked slowly around the garage.
“It means your brother was going to destroy everything your father built.”
Robert looked at him.
“The company.”
Ethan smiled.
“The money.”
Victor’s face became colder.
“My father.”
“Yes.”
Ethan looked at him.
“Your father was not the man you believed he was.”
Victor looked away.
He had already accepted that truth.
But hearing it from Ethan still hurt.
“You helped him.”
Ethan nodded.
“I did.”
“And my brother found out.”
“Yes.”
Victor’s voice shook.
“So you killed him.”
Ethan looked at him.
“I removed a problem.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“You don’t even feel guilty.”
Ethan looked at him.
“Guilt does not change outcomes.”
Clara stared at him.
“You really believe that?”
Ethan looked back.
“I know that.”
The confidence in his voice was frightening.
But then Victor noticed something.
Ethan kept looking toward the old box.
Not the people.
Not the door.
The box.
“What are you afraid of?” Victor asked.
For the first time, Ethan’s expression changed.
Only slightly.
But Victor saw it.
“You’re not here because we found the truth.”
Victor stepped closer.
“You’re here because there is something else in that box.”
Ethan said nothing.
Robert looked down at the remaining items.
The broken watch.
The documents.
The letter.
Then he noticed something hidden beneath the bottom layer.
A small envelope.
Victor reached for it.
Ethan moved immediately.
Too quickly.
Daniel stepped between them.
“Don’t.”
Ethan stopped.
Everyone understood.
Whatever was inside that envelope was the reason Ethan came back.
Victor opened it slowly.
Inside was a single page.
He read the first line.
Then his expression changed.
“What is it?” Clara asked.
Victor looked up.
His eyes filled with disbelief.
“It’s from my father.”
Robert stepped closer.
“What does it say?”
Victor looked back at the letter.
His voice became quiet.
“It says Ethan was never working for him.”
Nobody moved.
Victor continued reading.
“It says Ethan was working against him.”
Ethan’s face finally lost its calm.
And for the first time, everyone saw fear.
And for the first time, everyone saw fear.
Not anger.
Not confidence.
Fear.
Ethan stared at the letter in Victor’s hands as if the paper itself had become a weapon pointed directly at him.
The calm expression he had carried into the garage disappeared.
Daniel noticed immediately.
The man who had controlled every conversation until now was suddenly fighting to hide his reaction.
Victor looked down at the letter again.
His hands trembled slightly.
“My father knew.”
Robert stepped closer.
“What did he know?”
Victor continued reading silently.
Then he looked up.
“He knew Ethan was investigating him.”
Ethan’s face hardened.
“That letter is meaningless.”
Victor looked at him.
“Then why are you afraid of it?”
The question landed harder than an accusation.
Ethan said nothing.
Clara watched him carefully.
May you like
For years, she had remembered Ethan as a quiet man who stood in the background.
Someone who never raised his voice.
