Chương 2

“You’re not hurting her again,” Daniel said.

Victor looked at him with anger and disbelief.

Then he looked at Clara.

Something inside him seemed to break.

The rage on his face faded for only a moment.

Behind it was a man who had been carrying pain for years.

Daniel noticed the change.

So did Clara.

But before anyone could speak, a loud sound came from outside the garage.

All three of them froze.

Victor turned toward the doorway.

Daniel glanced back at Clara.

The woman’s eyes filled with fear again.

Not because of Victor.

Because she knew something else was coming.

Something neither man understood yet.

Daniel slowly looked between them.

The truth about that night was still hidden.

And now he realized the person in the tub was not the only one trapped.

The truth about that night was still hidden.

And now he realized the person in the tub was not the only one trapped.

The sound from outside grew louder as footsteps approached the garage entrance.

Daniel slowly turned toward the doorway, his body still positioned between Victor and Clara.

The bright daylight behind the glass doors revealed a shadow moving closer.

Victor’s expression changed immediately.

For the first time, Daniel saw genuine fear cross his face.

“Who is that?” Daniel asked.

Victor did not answer.

Clara’s breathing became faster.

Her eyes followed the approaching figure, and her panic became impossible to ignore.

The garage door began to open.

A man stepped inside carrying an old leather folder under one arm.

He was older than Daniel expected, with tired eyes and a serious expression that suggested he had come carrying a heavy truth.

Victor stared at him as if seeing a ghost.

“You shouldn’t be here,” Victor whispered.

The newcomer looked around the garage.

His eyes moved from the tub, to Clara, to Daniel standing protectively in front of her.

His face hardened.

“What have you done, Victor?”

Daniel looked between them.

He immediately understood that this was not a stranger.

This man knew Victor.

He knew Clara.

And he knew something about the past that neither of them had revealed.

Victor stepped forward.

“You have no right to judge me.”

The older man placed the leather folder on the hood of the black car.

“I have every right.”

Daniel watched carefully.

The tension in the room shifted.

Victor was no longer the only person with power.

The newcomer opened the folder and removed several old photographs.

He held them in his hand without showing them yet.

“Twenty years ago, you lost someone you loved.”

Victor looked away.

“You lost your brother.”

The words struck harder than Daniel expected.

Clara closed her eyes.

The memory clearly still haunted her.

“But you were not the only one who suffered that night,” the man continued.

Victor’s jaw tightened.

“Stop.”

“No.”

The man’s voice remained calm.

“Someone has to finally say what happened.”

Daniel looked at Clara.

She was trembling.

He moved slightly closer to her.

“It’s okay,” he said quietly.

But Clara only looked at him with sadness.

She knew it was not okay.

Not yet.

The older man walked closer but stopped several feet away from the tub.

“My name is Robert Hayes,” he said.

Daniel recognized the name.

Everyone in their town knew Robert.

He had been a respected investigator before retiring years earlier.

“What are you doing here?” Victor asked.

Robert looked directly at him.

“I came because I found what you were looking for.”

Victor froze.

The entire room seemed to hold its breath.

Daniel noticed Clara’s reaction.

She looked shocked.

Not surprised.

Shocked.

“What did you find?” Victor asked.

Robert opened the folder.

“Proof.”

Victor’s face changed.

“What kind of proof?”

“The kind that should have been discovered years ago.”

Daniel felt the weight of the moment.

This was not just about anger anymore.

There was a missing piece.

A secret that had been buried for decades.

Robert removed a document and held it out.

“You blamed Clara because she was the easiest person to blame.”

Victor stared at him.

“She was there.”

“Yes,” Robert replied.

“She was there.”

Victor’s expression hardened.

“But you never asked why.”

The words struck Victor.

For a moment, he had no response.

Daniel looked toward Clara.

The woman lowered her eyes.

A tear rolled down her face.

She had been carrying this moment for years.

Robert turned toward her.

“Clara, you should tell him.”

Victor immediately looked back at her.

“Tell me what?”

Clara could not answer.

The tape still covered her mouth.

Daniel carefully reached toward her face and removed it.

He moved slowly, giving her time to react.

The moment the tape came free, Clara gasped for air.

Her voice was weak.

“I tried to tell you.”

Victor stared at her.

The anger in his face was slowly replaced by confusion.

“You had years.”

“I did.”

Her voice shook.

“But you never listened.”

The words affected him.

Daniel could see it.

Victor wanted to deny it.

He wanted to remain angry.

But something about Clara’s voice made that impossible.

Robert stepped closer.

“Victor, your brother was not alone that night.”

Victor looked at him.

“What does that mean?”

Clara swallowed.

Her hands were still tied, but her eyes were finally free from silence.

“He came to me because he was afraid.”

Victor’s breathing stopped.

“Afraid of what?”

Clara looked at him.

“Of someone else.”

The garage became silent again.

Daniel felt a chill.

All this time, Victor had believed Clara was hiding the truth.

But maybe she had been hiding because she was protecting herself.

Or someone else.

“Who?” Victor asked.

Clara looked toward Robert.

The older man nodded slowly.

“It was someone close to your family.”

Victor stepped back.

“No.”

Robert did not look away.

“Yes.”

Victor shook his head.

“You’re lying.”

“I wish I was.”

The pain in Robert’s voice made the words heavier.

Daniel watched Victor struggle with the information.

The man who had entered the garage filled with certainty now looked lost.
