Chương 6

Most pages were filled with drawings, notes, and observations.
But near the end, several pages had been marked with circles.
Daniel leaned closer.
The writing was messy and rushed.
Names.
Dates.
Locations.
Evidence.
“He was investigating,” Daniel whispered.
Marcus nodded.
“Ethan discovered that people were using the old factory to hide things.”
Rachel looked at the notes.
“What things?”
Marcus looked at her.
“Things that could destroy powerful people.”
The room became quiet again.
Daniel looked at Shadow.
The dog was still beside the blanket.
Still waiting.
Still connected to the past.
“He knew,” Daniel said.
Marcus nodded.
“Shadow knew something was wrong before anyone else.”
Mia looked confused.
“How could a dog know?”
Daniel looked at her.
“Because sometimes animals notice things people ignore.”
Shadow lifted his head.
His ears moved slightly.
Then he looked toward a small cabinet against the far wall.
Everyone noticed.
Daniel walked over slowly.
The cabinet was old and covered in dust.
Shadow followed.
Daniel opened the door.
Inside was a small metal box.
It was locked.
Marcus immediately stepped forward.
“I never opened that.”
Daniel looked at him.
“Why?”
“Because Ethan left it here.”
Mia looked at the box.
“Maybe he wanted someone to find it.”
Daniel stared at the lock.
He remembered the cage.
He remembered the key.
He remembered all the things that had been hidden because people were afraid to look.
He searched the table and found a small key attached to a faded piece of string.
The key fit perfectly.
The box opened.
Inside were several documents.
A small recording device.
And a letter.
Daniel picked up the letter.
His hands became still when he saw his name written on the front.
“This is for me.”
Rachel looked surprised.
Marcus looked down.
“He trusted you.”
Daniel opened the letter carefully.
The paper was old.
The handwriting was unmistakable.
Daniel.
If you are reading this, something happened and I could not come back.
Daniel stopped breathing for a moment.
Mia looked up at him.
He continued silently for several seconds before reading the words aloud.
Shadow is not dangerous.
He is the only reason I survived as long as I did.
Rachel covered her mouth.
Marcus closed his eyes.
Daniel continued.
There are people who will try to make him look like the problem.
They will say he is unpredictable.
They will say he cannot be trusted.
But they are afraid because Shadow remembers.
The room felt colder.
Shadow moved closer to Daniel.
The dog rested his head against his leg.
Daniel looked down at him.
The letter continued.
If anything happens to me, protect him.
He knows the truth.
He knows where the evidence is.
And he knows who was there that night.
Daniel lowered the paper slowly.
Everyone understood what those words meant.
Shadow had never been guarding a place.
He had been guarding the truth.
Mia looked at the dog with sadness in her eyes.
“He was waiting for someone to come back.”
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.”
Marcus looked toward the recording device.
“There is more.”
Daniel picked it up.
The device was old, but it still had power.
He pressed the button.
For a moment, there was only static.
Then a voice filled the room.
A young voice.
A familiar voice.
“Daniel, if you found this, then Shadow led you here.”
Daniel froze.
Ethan.
The sound of his voice after all these years felt impossible.
Rachel grabbed Daniel’s arm.
Nobody moved.
Nobody even breathed.
“I know people will tell you I am gone,” Ethan’s recording continued.
“But I need you to know the truth.”
The audio crackled.
“There was someone inside our group.”
Daniel looked at Marcus.
Marcus lowered his eyes.
“Someone we trusted.”
The recording continued.
“They caused the accident.”
Mia looked toward Shadow.
The dog remained perfectly still.
Waiting for the next words.
“I tried to get away.”
The voice became quieter.
“Shadow saved me.”
Daniel’s heart raced.
The recording continued.
“But I could not go back.”
A long pause followed.
“I needed time.”
The room was silent except for the old recording.
Then Ethan said something that changed everything.
“If you are hearing this, I am close.”
Daniel looked up.
Close.
Not gone.
Not lost.
Close.
The recording ended.
No one spoke.
Then Shadow suddenly turned toward the hallway behind them.
His ears lifted.
His body became alert.
Daniel followed his gaze.
A faint sound came from somewhere deeper inside the building.
A slow movement.
A single footstep.
And then another.
Someone else was there.
The footsteps grew louder until they stopped just outside the hidden room.
Nobody moved.
Shadow stood completely still, staring into the darkness with a focus that made Daniel’s skin tighten.
The dog was not reacting with fear.
He was reacting with recognition.
Daniel slowly stepped between Mia and the doorway.
Rachel moved closer as well, keeping her eyes fixed on the entrance.
Marcus looked like he already knew who was coming.
“You know who that is,” Daniel whispered.
Marcus did not answer.
That silence was enough.
The figure appeared slowly in the doorway.
A man stood there, older than everyone expected.
His face was thinner.
His hair was almost completely gray.
But his eyes were familiar.
Mia looked at Daniel.
Daniel looked at the man.
For a moment, nobody believed what they were seeing.
Then Shadow moved.
The large dog walked past Daniel and crossed the room.
The man lowered himself slowly to one knee.
Shadow reached him.
The man placed both hands around the dog’s face.
And the impossible happened.
Shadow made a quiet sound that nobody in the room had ever heard before.
A sound of relief.
A sound of recognition.
The man pressed his forehead against the dog’s head.
“I knew you were still waiting for me,” he whispered.
Daniel felt his entire world shift.
“Ethan.”
The man looked up.
His eyes filled with emotion.
“Yes.”
Rachel covered her mouth.
May you like
Mia stared in confusion and wonder.
The person everyone believed was gone was standing in front of them.
