Chương 4

“I was wrong too,” she admitted.
Daniel looked at her.
Rachel rarely spoke about mistakes.
“I saw the reports.”
She looked at Shadow.
“I saw the warnings.”
She paused.
“But I never looked at him.”
The confession sat between them.
Three people stood in front of a cage that suddenly represented everything they had misunderstood.
Daniel reached into his pocket and pulled out a small key.
Mia watched.
“Is that the key?”
Daniel nodded.
“The original one.”
“Why did you keep it?”
He looked at the key.
“Because part of me always knew I would need to use it.”
The moment felt almost impossible.
The same man who had helped keep Shadow behind the bars was now preparing to open them.
But before he could unlock the cage, a loud sound came from the far side of the warehouse.
Everyone froze.
A metal object fell somewhere in the darkness.
Shadow immediately turned his head.
His body became alert.
Mia moved slightly closer to Daniel.
Rachel looked toward the shadows.
Daniel’s expression changed.
The calm moment disappeared.
He knew that sound.
Someone else was in the warehouse.
Shadow stood between Mia and the darkness, not as a threat, but as protection.
The large dog positioned himself near the front of the cage.
His eyes focused on the unknown movement.
Daniel noticed something that made him stop.
Shadow was not afraid.
He was ready.
A figure moved faintly between the old equipment.
Daniel stepped forward.
“Who’s there?”
No answer came.
Only footsteps.
Slow.
Careful.
The warehouse lights flickered above them.
Mia held onto Daniel’s arm.
Rachel stayed beside the cage.
Shadow continued watching the darkness.
Then a familiar voice finally echoed through the warehouse.
“Daniel.”
Daniel froze.
He knew that voice.
A voice connected to the past he thought he had escaped.
A voice connected to the day Ethan disappeared.
The key remained in Daniel’s hand.
The cage remained locked.
And the truth they had been searching for was closer than any of them expected.
Who should be revealed next: Ethan’s fate or the person in the warehouse?
The familiar voice echoed again through the empty warehouse, carrying a weight that made Daniel’s entire body go still.
For a moment, he could not move.
He knew that voice better than anyone.
It belonged to Marcus.
The man who had been there the night Ethan disappeared.
The man who had helped lead the search.
The man who had spent years insisting that Shadow was dangerous.
Daniel slowly turned toward the darkness.
A figure stepped into the weak light between the old shelves and broken equipment.
Marcus looked older than Daniel remembered.
His hair was grayer.
His face carried more exhaustion.
But his eyes were the same.
Cold.
Careful.
Watching everything.
Mia stayed close to Daniel while Rachel moved slightly in front of her.
Shadow remained near the cage door, focused on the man who had entered.
Marcus looked at the dog.
For the first time, his expression changed.
Not fear.
Something closer to guilt.
“You should not have brought her here,” Marcus said.
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“You followed us.”
Marcus did not answer.
That silence confirmed everything.
Rachel looked between them.
“You knew we were coming?”
Marcus looked away.
“I knew someone would eventually find out.”
The words created a strange tension in the room.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Find out what?”
Marcus looked at the cage.
The question he had avoided for years was finally standing in front of him.
Mia looked at Shadow.
The dog was watching Marcus differently than he watched everyone else.
There was recognition.
Not trust.
Not comfort.
Recognition.
Daniel noticed.
“You know him.”
Marcus did not respond.
“You know Shadow.”
The old warehouse became completely silent.
Marcus took a slow breath.
“Yes.”
Rachel’s eyes narrowed.
“Then tell us the truth.”
Marcus looked down.
“The truth is not as simple as you think.”
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“Ethan disappeared because of you.”
Marcus looked at him quickly.
“That is not what happened.”
“Then what happened?”
Marcus looked toward the dog.
Shadow remained still.
Waiting.
Just like he had waited all those years.
“Ethan found something he was never supposed to find.”
Mia looked confused.
“What?”
Marcus glanced at her.
Then at Daniel.
Then back at Shadow.
“Something connected to why Shadow was found near that factory.”
Daniel frowned.
“What are you talking about?”
Marcus slowly walked closer, keeping his distance from the cage.
“Shadow was not abandoned.”
Daniel said nothing.
“He was protecting Ethan.”
The words changed the atmosphere instantly.
Rachel stepped forward.
“Protecting him from what?”
Marcus looked toward the broken windows where the evening light entered the warehouse.
“From people who wanted something hidden.”
Daniel felt a cold feeling move through him.
He remembered all the things that never made sense.
The missing records.
The false reports.
The sudden decision to classify Shadow as dangerous.
Too many things had happened too quickly.
And now Marcus was standing there, admitting there had always been more.
“Where is Ethan?” Daniel asked.
Marcus closed his eyes for a moment.
The question had followed him for years.
“He survived.”
Mia looked up.
Rachel froze.
Daniel stared at him.
“What did you say?”
Marcus looked directly at him.
“Ethan survived.”
The words felt impossible.
Daniel’s face changed.
All the grief.
All the years of believing Ethan was gone.
All the memories he had forced himself to accept.
Everything suddenly cracked.
“Where is he?”
Marcus hesitated.
“That is the part you need to understand.”
Daniel stepped closer.
“Where is he?”
Marcus looked at Shadow.
“The night Ethan disappeared, he was not alone.”
Shadow lifted his head slightly.
“He and Shadow found evidence that someone was using the old factory property for illegal activity.”
Daniel listened carefully.
“The accident was not an accident.”
Rachel covered her mouth slightly.
Mia looked between the adults.
She did not understand every word, but she understood enough to know the truth was painful.
“Ethan tried to get help,” Marcus continued.
“But someone found out.”
Daniel’s hands tightened.
May you like
“Who?”
Marcus looked at him.
