Chương 5

“Someone close.”

The answer was worse than a name.

Because it meant betrayal.

Someone they trusted had been involved.

Someone who knew Ethan.

Someone who knew Shadow.

Daniel looked around the warehouse.

Every old memory suddenly felt different.

Every conversation.

Every decision.

Every warning.

“You knew all this time,” Daniel said quietly.

Marcus lowered his eyes.

“I knew pieces.”

“You let everyone think Shadow was dangerous.”

Marcus looked ashamed.

“I thought keeping him away was the only way to protect him.”

Daniel laughed once, but there was no humor in it.

“Protect him?”

He pointed toward the cage.

“You locked him away.”

Marcus looked at Shadow.

“I know.”

The admission was quiet.

But it carried years of regret.

Mia walked closer to the cage.

She looked at Shadow.

The dog remained calm despite the tension around him.

She placed her hand against the bars.

Shadow moved closer immediately.

Marcus watched the interaction.

His expression changed.

“He never did that for anyone else.”

Daniel looked at him.

“What?”

“After Ethan disappeared, Shadow stopped trusting people.”

Marcus looked at Mia.

“But he trusts her.”

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone understood what that meant.

Mia had reached something inside Shadow that had been closed for years.

Not because she forced him.

Because she reminded him of something he had lost.

Kindness.

Family.

Safety.

Daniel looked at the lock again.

The key remained in his hand.

The decision suddenly felt bigger than opening a cage.

It felt like admitting they had all been wrong.

He inserted the key.

The metal clicked softly.

Everyone watched.

Shadow looked at the door.

The cage opened slowly.

The rusty hinges made a long scraping sound across the warehouse.

For a few seconds, nobody moved.

The large dog stood inside the open doorway.

Free.

But uncertain.

Daniel stepped back.

He did not command him.

He did not call him.

He simply gave him a choice.

Shadow looked at Mia.

Then at Daniel.

Then toward Marcus.

The dog slowly stepped forward.

His paws touched the concrete floor outside the cage for the first time in a long time.

Mia smiled.

Rachel released a breath of relief.

But Daniel noticed something else.

Shadow was not looking at freedom.

He was looking toward the far side of the warehouse.

Toward a dark hallway.

A hallway nobody had mentioned.

A hallway leading deeper into the abandoned building.

Marcus saw it too.

His face suddenly changed.

“No.”

Daniel turned.

“What?”

Marcus took a step forward.

“Ethan.”

The name stopped everyone.

Shadow began walking toward the hallway.

Slowly.

Purposefully.

Like he had been waiting for this moment.

Daniel followed.

Mia stayed beside him.

Rachel and Marcus moved behind them.

The old warehouse seemed to awaken as they entered the darkness.

Dust floated through the air.

Old doors lined the walls.

Broken lights flickered above them.

Shadow stopped at the end of the hallway.

A single door stood in front of him.

A door covered in scratches.

A door that looked like something had been trying to reach the other side.

Daniel looked at Marcus.

“What is this place?”

Marcus did not answer.

He did not need to.

The fear in his face said enough.

Shadow lowered his head.

Then he pushed the door open.

The door opened with a slow, painful creak that echoed through the hidden room beyond.

Everyone stopped moving.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

The darkness inside felt heavier than the darkness behind them.

Shadow stepped forward first.

His large body disappeared into the room, but his movements were calm and certain.

It was not the behavior of an animal searching blindly.

It was the behavior of someone returning to a place he remembered.

Daniel followed carefully.

Mia held onto his hand as they entered.

Rachel stayed close behind them.

Marcus was the last to move.

He looked like a man walking toward a truth he had spent years avoiding.

The room was smaller than the warehouse but filled with things that clearly did not belong there.

Old boxes covered the walls.

Dust covered the floor.

A broken table sat in the corner.

On top of it were photographs, papers, and objects carefully preserved beneath a layer of plastic.

Daniel’s eyes moved across the room.

“This was hidden here.”

Marcus nodded slowly.

“Yes.”

“By who?”

Marcus did not answer.

The silence was enough to tell Daniel that the answer would hurt.

Shadow walked toward the table.

He stopped beside an old blue blanket folded in the corner.

Mia noticed immediately.

“He remembers.”

Daniel looked at the blanket.

The dog lowered his head and touched it gently with his nose.

Rachel stepped closer.

“What is that?”

Marcus swallowed.

“That belonged to Ethan.”

The name filled the room again.

Daniel walked toward the table.

His hands shook slightly as he picked up one of the photographs.

It showed Ethan standing outside the old factory.

Shadow was beside him.

Both of them looked happy.

Both looked like they belonged together.

Daniel turned the photograph over.

There was writing on the back.

A date.

A location.

And a sentence written in Ethan’s handwriting.

Shadow found me when nobody else would.

Daniel closed his eyes.

The words hurt because they explained everything.

The dog had saved Ethan.

And Ethan had saved the dog.

Mia looked at another photograph.

“Why did nobody know about this place?”

Marcus looked away.

“Because someone wanted it forgotten.”

Daniel placed the photograph down.

“You keep saying someone.”

Marcus remained silent.

“Who was it?”

The older man stared at the floor.

“I was afraid.”

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“You were afraid while a boy disappeared.”

Marcus looked up.

“I was afraid because I knew what they were capable of.”

Rachel stepped between them slightly.

“Who are they?”

Marcus walked toward the table and picked up a small notebook.

“This belonged to Ethan.”

Daniel looked at the notebook.

“Why do you have it?”

Marcus opened it carefully.

“Because I found it after he disappeared.”

Mia looked at the pages.

May you like

“What does it say?”

Marcus flipped through the notebook.
