Chương 3

Her silence answered for her.

The truth was finally becoming impossible to avoid.

They had all been so focused on protecting themselves that they never considered protecting him.

The dog had been waiting behind those bars while everyone argued about what he was.

But Mia did not ask what he was.

She simply treated him like someone.

Daniel walked toward the cage door.

His hand stopped inches away from the lock.

The rusty metal felt cold beneath his fingers.

For a long moment, he stood there without moving.

Rachel watched him carefully.

“If you open that,” she said quietly, “everything changes.”

Daniel looked back at her.

“I know.”

Mia looked up at him.

“Will he leave?”

Daniel looked at Shadow.

The dog was still watching the little girl.

Waiting.

Not forcing.

Not demanding.

Just waiting.

“I don’t know,” Daniel admitted.

Mia looked confused.

“Then why open it?”

Daniel stared at the lock.

Because sometimes the hardest thing to do was not holding on.

It was letting go.

The warehouse lights flickered again.

Dust moved through the air as a cold breeze entered through a broken window.

Shadow remained still.

The cage door stood between the past and whatever came next.

Daniel slowly placed his hand around the lock.

And for the first time in months, he wondered if the cage had been built to protect people from Shadow.

Or if it had only been built to hide the truth from them.

Should the next segment reveal Shadow’s hidden past or Daniel’s forgotten promise?

The lock remained cold beneath Daniel’s hand as memories he had tried to bury returned with painful clarity.

He remembered the first night he met Shadow.

The dog had not been inside a cage then.

He had been standing in the middle of an abandoned road during a heavy storm, soaked from the rain and refusing to leave a place where someone had once been.

Everyone thought the animal was confused.

Everyone thought he was waiting for nothing.

But Daniel had always believed there was a reason.

Shadow had never looked lost.

He had looked like he was waiting.

Waiting for someone to come back.

Daniel slowly removed his hand from the lock.

The sound of his breathing became louder in the silence.

Mia watched him carefully.

She could tell the decision was difficult even if she did not understand why.

“Who was the boy?” she asked.

Daniel looked down at the photograph still in his hand.

His expression changed.

The seriousness on his face became something heavier.

“That was Ethan.”

Mia looked at the picture again.

“Was he Shadow’s owner?”

Daniel nodded.

“He was more than that.”

Rachel stepped closer.

She knew this was the part Daniel avoided talking about.

Ethan had not been just a person who owned a dog.

He had been the person who saved Shadow.

Years ago, Shadow had been found injured and alone near an old factory.

Most people ignored him.

Some people believed he was too damaged to trust.

But Ethan had been different.

He had seen the fear behind the animal’s eyes.

He had taken him home.

He had spent months helping him recover.

Slowly, the frightened dog became part of their family.

Shadow followed Ethan everywhere.

They walked together.

They played together.

They slept in the same room.

To Ethan, Shadow was not a pet.

He was his best friend.

Mia listened quietly.

The warehouse suddenly felt smaller as the story filled the empty space.

“What happened to Ethan?” she asked.

Daniel looked toward the ground.

The question was simple.

The answer was not.

“Ethan disappeared.”

Mia’s eyes widened.

Rachel looked away.

Even after all this time, saying those words still hurt.

“He disappeared?” Mia repeated.

Daniel nodded slowly.

“One day, he and Shadow were together near the old property outside town.”

He paused.

“The weather changed quickly.”

Mia waited for him to continue.

“There was an accident.”

Daniel’s voice became quieter.

“People searched for days.”

The dog inside the cage lifted its head when Daniel spoke.

Shadow remembered.

He remembered the voices.

The rain.

The fear.

The last moments before everything changed.

Daniel noticed the reaction.

He moved closer to the cage.

“He was there when it happened.”

Rachel looked at him.

“You never told her that part.”

Daniel swallowed.

“I never told anyone.”

The truth had been locked away almost as tightly as Shadow.

Mia looked at the dog.

“He was alone?”

Daniel nodded.

“He stayed near the place where Ethan was last seen.”

“For how long?”

Daniel looked at the animal.

“Three days.”

The little girl’s face changed.

She looked sad.

Not frightened.

Sad.

“He was waiting for him.”

Daniel felt a painful pressure in his chest.

Because that was exactly what he believed.

Shadow had waited until people forced him away.

They had called him dangerous because he would not leave.

They had called him aggressive because he fought against anyone trying to move him.

But maybe he was not fighting.

Maybe he was protecting the last place he remembered Ethan being.

The cage had come later.

After rumors spread.

After people became afraid.

After everyone decided the easiest answer was that Shadow was a threat.

Daniel had been part of that decision.

That was the part he could never forgive himself for.

“I should have known,” he whispered.

Rachel looked at him.

“You tried to help.”

“I should have listened.”

The words came out with regret.

“I saw a scared animal and thought the safest thing was to lock him away.”

The dog looked toward Daniel.

For a moment, their eyes met.

Daniel saw no anger there.

Only the same sadness that had been there from the beginning.

Mia placed her hand on the bars.

Shadow moved closer.

Daniel watched the connection between them.

It was impossible to ignore anymore.

She had reached the part of Shadow that everyone else had forgotten existed.

The gentle part.

The trusting part.

The part Ethan had known.

Rachel slowly approached the cage door.

Her fingers touched the rusted metal.
