Chương 6

"Hello, Daniel."

Emily stared at him.

"He's the one?"

Daniel did not answer.

He could barely breathe.

The man he had spent years believing had simply disappeared was standing inside the room where his family's secrets had been hidden.

Robert looked around the study.

"I always wondered how long it would take you to find this place."

Daniel's anger rose.

"You were hiding here?"

Robert shrugged.

"Not hiding."

He looked at the hidden compartment.

"Waiting."

Thomas stepped forward.

"You knew we would come."

Robert smiled.

"I knew someone would eventually discover the truth."

Margaret's expression hardened.

"You knew everything."

Robert looked at her.

"I knew enough."

Daniel looked between them.

"How long have you been watching us?"

Robert did not answer immediately.

That silence was more frightening than any confession.

Daniel stepped closer.

"Answer me."

"Long enough to see you become exactly what your father wanted you to become."

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

"And what is that?"

"A man who protects everyone except himself."

The words struck deeper than Robert probably intended.

Because part of Daniel feared they were true.

For years, he had believed control was the same as protection.

He had built walls around his family.

He had created a perfect home.

But somehow, danger had entered through the cracks he never saw.

Emily looked at Robert.

"Why did you hurt me?"

Robert turned toward her.

His expression became almost curious.

"I never wanted to hurt you."

Emily's eyes filled with disbelief.

"You made me afraid to come home."

Robert looked away.

"You were never supposed to know."

Daniel's voice became sharper.

"Know what?"

Robert walked slowly toward the desk.

"The truth about your father."

Daniel looked confused.

"My father?"

Robert nodded.

"Your father built this family on a secret."

Margaret interrupted.

"Don't twist this."

Robert smiled.

"You always did believe you were the only one protecting Daniel."

Daniel looked at his mother.

"What is he talking about?"

Margaret looked away.

For the first time, Daniel realized she was afraid.

Not of Robert.

Of the truth.

Robert placed a folder on the desk.

"This contains the original documents."

Daniel stared at it.

"What documents?"

"The ones your father destroyed."

Thomas stepped closer.

"Robert."

His voice carried a warning.

But Robert ignored him.

"The truth about the Whitmore family."

Daniel opened the folder slowly.

Inside were old records.

Letters.

Photographs.

And one document with a name that made his heart stop.

Emily Whitmore.

He looked at the date.

The document was created before Emily was born.

"What is this?"

Robert smiled.

"Proof that your father knew someone would try to take her away."

Daniel looked at the papers.

His confusion grew.

"Then why did you?"

Robert's expression changed.

Because for the first time, there was anger behind his calm face.

"Because your father chose you."

The room went silent.

Daniel looked up.

"What?"

Robert stepped closer.

"Your father always chose you."

The words carried years of resentment.

"You were the son who could do no wrong."

Daniel shook his head.

"That is not true."

Robert laughed quietly.

"Of course you believe that."

He pointed at the documents.

"Your father left you everything."

Daniel looked at him.

"He left me responsibility."

"No."

Robert's voice became bitter.

"He left you power."

Daniel felt the old family wounds opening.

He had spent his entire life believing his father loved both sons equally.

Now he wondered how much he had never noticed.

Robert looked at Emily.

"And then he chose her too."

Emily stepped back.

"What?"

"Your grandfather created a plan to protect you."

Robert's eyes narrowed.

"Because he believed you were the future."

Daniel closed the folder.

"You are angry because my father loved his family?"

Robert's expression became cold.

"I am angry because he lied to me."

The statement surprised everyone.

Robert continued.

"He promised me I would have a place in this family."

Margaret shook her head.

"You wanted control."

Robert looked at her.

"I wanted what I deserved."

Daniel stared at him.

"And that led you to fake your death?"

Robert smiled.

"People believe what they are told."

Daniel felt sick.

"My mother."

Robert looked at him.

"I never planned for her to survive."

The room became silent.

Margaret closed her eyes.

Emily grabbed Daniel's arm.

Daniel's face changed.

A lifetime of grief turned into something darker.

"You tried to kill my mother."

Robert did not deny it.

"You have no idea what your father cost me."

Daniel moved forward, but Thomas stopped him.

"Daniel."

The warning was clear.

Robert wanted him emotional.

Wanted him reckless.

Daniel forced himself to remain still.

"What happened that night?"

Robert looked toward Margaret.

"Ask her."

Daniel turned.

His mother looked devastated.

"Mom?"

Margaret slowly walked toward him.

"I should have told you."

The pain in her voice was worse than any confession.

"Your father discovered Robert was using the company to hide illegal financial deals."

Daniel looked at Robert.

Robert remained silent.

"When your father confronted him, Robert threatened everyone."

Margaret looked at Emily.

"Especially the children."

Daniel's hand tightened.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because your father believed Robert would come after you."

Margaret's eyes filled with tears.

"He asked me to disappear."

Daniel stared at her.

"He asked you?"

She nodded.

"He thought if Robert believed I was gone, he would stop searching."

Daniel looked broken.

"So you let me mourn you."

Margaret whispered.

"I watched you grow up from a distance."

A painful silence followed.

Emily looked at Daniel.

She could see the conflict inside him.

The anger.

The heartbreak.

The love.

Robert suddenly reached toward the desk.

Thomas reacted immediately.

"Don't."

But Robert was faster.

He grabbed a small envelope hidden beneath the documents.

Daniel noticed.

"What is that?"

Robert held it tightly.

"The final piece."

Daniel stepped forward.

"Give it to me."

Robert smiled.

"Your father wrote this before he died."

Margaret looked terrified.

"No."

Daniel froze.

"What?"

Robert looked at him.

May you like

"He wanted you to know who your real enemy was."

Daniel's eyes moved toward the envelope.
