Chương 2

"I know my family."
"No."
Claire's voice became softer.
"You know the version everyone wanted you to know."
The statement hung in the air.
Daniel looked at Emily.
Her reaction told him more than Claire's words.
There was a secret.
A secret big enough to make his daughter afraid.
A secret big enough that someone had tried to keep him away from the truth.
"What did you find, Emily?"
The young woman wiped her tears with shaking hands.
"I found old documents in the study."
Daniel frowned.
"What documents?"
Emily hesitated.
"They were hidden behind the wall."
The answer surprised him.
"The wall?"
She nodded slowly.
"There was a locked space behind the bookshelf."
Daniel turned toward the mansion interior.
The study had belonged to his father before him.
It was the one room in the house he rarely entered because it held too many memories.
"Why didn't you tell me about this?"
"I did."
Emily's voice cracked.
"I called you."
Daniel looked confused.
"When?"
"Three months ago."
His expression changed.
He remembered that period.
His phone had been replaced after a company security issue.
There had been dozens of missing messages and strange technical problems.
But he never imagined someone close to him could have been involved.
Emily continued.
"Someone answered your phone."
Daniel felt a chill move through him.
"Who?"
Emily looked directly at Claire.
The woman in the gold dress became completely silent.
Daniel stared between them.
Then he noticed something on the marble floor near Emily.
A small torn piece of paper.
He picked it up slowly.
The writing on it was familiar.
It was his father's handwriting.
The same handwriting from old family letters he had kept for decades.
Daniel unfolded the paper.
Only one sentence was visible.
His face changed as he read the words.
"Daniel, if you are reading this, it means they failed to stop her from telling you."
The room went completely still.
Daniel looked up slowly.
Claire's expression had finally changed from controlled confidence to fear.
And Emily whispered the words that made his entire world collapse.
"Dad, your father knew this would happen before he died."
Daniel read the sentence again, hoping the words would somehow change the second time.
They did not.
His father's handwriting stared back at him like a warning from a past that had been carefully buried.
The room that once represented family memories now felt like the scene of a betrayal that had been waiting years to reveal itself.
"What did my father know?"
Daniel's voice was low, but every word carried the weight of fear and anger.
Emily looked at him with tears still gathering in her eyes.
"He knew something was wrong with Claire."
Claire immediately stepped forward.
"Emily, don't do this."
Daniel turned sharply toward her.
"Don't do what?"
Claire stopped.
For the first time since Daniel entered the mansion, she looked like someone who was no longer in control.
"Don't let a scared girl misunderstand things she doesn't understand."
Daniel's expression hardened.
"She is my daughter."
The words were simple, but they changed the entire room.
Emily lowered her head, trying to hide the emotion on her face.
For months, she had waited to hear someone say those words with certainty.
Not as a responsibility.
Not as an obligation.
As a promise.
Daniel carefully folded the paper and placed it in his pocket.
"Take me to the study."
Claire's eyes widened slightly.
"Daniel, maybe you should calm down before you make decisions you regret."
He looked at her.
"I spent months away from this house believing my family was safe."
His voice became quieter.
"Now I find my daughter injured, terrified, and holding a letter from my dead father telling me someone tried to stop her from telling me the truth."
He stepped closer.
"I think I have been calm enough."
Emily slowly stood with his help.
Her legs were still weak, but she refused to stay on the floor.
Daniel noticed the determination in her eyes.
It reminded him of his own father.
The same stubborn strength.
The same refusal to give up when something was wrong.
Together, they walked toward the old study.
Claire followed behind them silently.
The mansion felt different as they moved through the hallway.
Every painting, every expensive decoration, every carefully chosen piece of furniture suddenly seemed like part of a story Daniel had never been allowed to read.
When they reached the study, Daniel stopped in front of the large wooden doors.
He placed his hand on the handle but hesitated.
He had not entered this room in years.
The last time he had stood here was the night before his father died.
That night, his father had told him something strange.
"Protect what matters, Daniel."
At the time, he thought the old man was talking about the family business.
Now he wondered if he had been talking about something else.
Daniel opened the door.
The smell of old books and polished wood filled the air.
Moonlight from the tall windows illuminated the room.
Everything looked untouched.
The large desk remained in the center.
The shelves were filled with family records, business files, and memories from another generation.
Emily walked slowly toward the bookshelf on the left side of the room.
"This is where I found it."
Daniel followed her.
"Show me."
She reached behind several old books and touched a hidden section of wood.
After a moment, she pressed a small corner.
A quiet click echoed through the room.
A narrow section of the bookshelf moved outward.
Daniel stared in disbelief.
His father had hidden a secret room inside the study.
Claire remained near the doorway.
She said nothing.
That silence told Daniel more than any confession could.
Behind the hidden panel was a small compartment.
Inside were several boxes, old photographs, and documents wrapped carefully in protective covers.
Daniel reached for the first box.
May you like
His hands were steady, but his face showed the emotional storm inside him.
The first photograph he pulled out was a picture of his father standing beside a younger Claire.
