Chương 3

Daniel froze.

Emily noticed immediately.

"You know her?"

Daniel looked at the photograph.

"I thought I did."

Claire closed her eyes briefly.

"I was hoping you would never find those."

Daniel turned toward her.

"Why?"

She did not answer.

"Why were you hiding this?"

Claire finally looked at him.

"Because your father knew what I was capable of."

The confession was so quiet that it almost disappeared.

Daniel stared at her.

"What does that mean?"

Claire walked slowly into the room.

Her perfect appearance was beginning to disappear.

The woman who always seemed untouchable now looked exhausted.

"Your father knew I was trying to protect myself."

"Protect yourself from what?"

Claire looked at Emily.

"From losing everything."

Daniel shook his head.

"You hurt my daughter because you were afraid of losing something?"

"No."

Claire's voice became sharper.

"You don't understand."

"Then make me understand."

The room fell silent.

Claire looked at the documents inside the hidden compartment.

"Your father discovered the truth about Emily's birth."

Daniel stopped breathing for a moment.

Emily looked confused.

"What are you talking about?"

Daniel slowly turned toward Claire.

"Choose your next words carefully."

Claire swallowed.

"Emily was never supposed to find those records."

Daniel stepped closer.

"Why?"

Claire looked at him with a mixture of fear and sadness.

"Because some truths destroy families."

Emily's face changed.

She looked at her father.

"Dad?"

Daniel immediately moved closer to her.

"Whatever she says, you stay with me."

Claire watched them.

For a moment, there was something almost like regret in her eyes.

Then she looked away.

"I didn't want this to happen."

Daniel's voice became cold.

"You had months to tell me the truth."

"I was trying to fix it."

"By making my daughter afraid?"

Claire had no answer.

Daniel opened another folder from the hidden compartment.

Inside were medical records.

Old hospital documents.

Names.

Dates.

Information he had never seen before.

His eyes moved quickly across the pages.

Then he stopped.

The color drained from his face.

Emily noticed.

"What is it?"

Daniel could not speak.

The document in his hand revealed something that changed everything he believed about his family.

Claire whispered.

"Now you understand why your father wanted to protect her."

Daniel looked up slowly.

His expression was filled with shock.

"Protect her from who?"

Claire looked toward the closed study door.

Then she whispered the answer.

"From the person who has been watching this family for twenty-two years."

A sudden sound came from the hallway.

Everyone turned.

The study door, which Daniel had closed behind them, slowly began to open.

No one had touched it.

Emily grabbed her father's arm.

Daniel stepped in front of her.

His eyes locked onto the darkness outside the room.

And then a familiar voice spoke from the hallway.

"I was wondering when you would finally find the truth."

A useful next step is to continue with the following segment to reveal who entered the study and complete the hidden family secret.

The voice from the hallway made Daniel's entire body go still.

He knew that voice.

Not because he heard it often.

Because he had spent years trying to forget it.

The study door opened wider, revealing a man standing in the dim hallway.

Daniel stared at him as memories from another lifetime rushed back.

"Thomas."

The name left his mouth like a question.

Thomas Whitmore stepped into the room slowly.

He looked older than Daniel remembered, with gray hair replacing the dark hair from his younger years, but his eyes were exactly the same.

Cold.

Calculating.

Unchanged.

Emily tightened her grip on her father's arm.

"Dad, who is that?"

Daniel did not answer immediately.

He was trying to understand how someone who was supposed to be gone could be standing in front of him.

Thomas looked at Emily.

"So you finally found out."

Daniel moved in front of his daughter.

"Stay away from her."

Thomas gave a small smile.

"Still protective."

His voice carried a strange mixture of disappointment and amusement.

"Your father was the same way."

Daniel's expression hardened.

"You are supposed to be dead."

Thomas walked farther into the study.

"That was the story everyone agreed to believe."

Claire looked away.

Daniel noticed.

"You knew."

Claire's silence answered before her words did.

"You knew he was alive."

Her eyes filled with guilt.

"I knew."

The confession hit harder than Daniel expected.

He looked at the woman he had trusted for years.

"You lied to me."

Claire whispered.

"I was trying to protect you."

Daniel shook his head.

"Everyone keeps saying that."

His voice became heavier.

"But somehow protecting me always meant keeping the truth from me."

Thomas walked toward the hidden compartment.

"That is because the truth was never meant to save you."

He touched one of the old documents.

"The truth was meant to destroy the people who built their lives on a lie."

Emily looked between them.

"What does this have to do with me?"

Thomas turned toward her.

For a brief moment, his expression changed.

There was something almost like regret.

"Everything."

Daniel immediately reacted.

"Don't talk to her."

Thomas ignored him.

"Emily, your entire life has been shaped by a secret you were never supposed to discover."

Emily's breathing became unsteady.

"I don't understand."

Thomas looked at Daniel.

"Your father told you that you inherited everything because you were his only son."

Daniel frowned.

"What are you talking about?"

Thomas picked up one of the medical documents.

"Your father knew the company was built on something that could destroy the family name."

Daniel stared at him.

"What does that have to do with Emily?"

Thomas looked down at the papers.

"Twenty-two years ago, a child was born."

The room became silent.

Daniel felt a growing fear inside him.

Thomas continued.

"That child was connected to a secret your father spent his entire life hiding."

Emily looked at Daniel.

"Dad?"

Daniel's eyes moved toward the documents again.

May you like

He wanted to deny everything.

He wanted to say Thomas was manipulating them.
