Chương 5

Margaret took a slow breath.

"I know."

"No."

Daniel stepped back.

"You don't know."

His eyes filled with years of pain.

"You don't know what it was like to lose your mother."

Margaret's expression broke.

"I know exactly what it was like to lose my son."

The room went silent.

Emily watched her father carefully.

She saw something she had never seen before.

Daniel was not angry anymore.

He was hurt.

A child standing in front of the person he thought abandoned him.

Thomas looked away.

For the first time, he seemed uncomfortable.

Daniel noticed.

"You knew too."

Thomas nodded.

"I did."

Daniel looked around the room.

Everyone had known except him.

His own family had built an entire world around a lie.

"Why was I the only one left outside the truth?"

Margaret looked toward Emily.

"Because your father wanted you protected."

Daniel frowned.

"My father?"

She nodded.

"Your father discovered that someone was trying to destroy this family."

Thomas spoke quietly.

"And he knew the person behind it would stop at nothing."

Daniel looked at the documents on the desk.

"The accident."

Margaret nodded.

"It was not an accident."

Emily moved closer to the desk.

"What happened that night?"

Margaret looked at the young woman.

"You deserve to know."

Daniel reached for Emily's hand.

She held onto his immediately.

"The night I was supposed to die, someone tampered with my car."

Margaret's voice trembled.

"Your grandfather discovered the truth before anyone else."

Daniel listened carefully.

"He wanted to expose the person responsible, but before he could, he realized the danger was much bigger than he imagined."

Thomas walked toward the window.

"He found evidence that someone inside the family had access to everything."

"The company."

"The financial records."

"The private information."

Daniel looked at Claire.

She lowered her eyes.

"But why Emily?"

Margaret looked at the bracelet on Emily's wrist.

"Because your father gave her something that connected her to the past."

Emily touched the bracelet.

"This?"

Margaret nodded.

"When Emily was born, your grandfather discovered something about the hospital records."

Daniel looked confused.

"What kind of records?"

Margaret hesitated.

"Records showing someone tried to change the identity of a child."

Emily's face went pale.

"But you said I was Dad's daughter."

"You are."

Margaret looked at her with warmth.

"But someone wanted to erase the proof."

Daniel felt anger rising again.

"Who?"

Nobody answered immediately.

Then Claire spoke.

"I know who."

Everyone looked at her.

Claire's eyes filled with tears.

"I have known for years."

Daniel stared at her.

"Then say it."

Claire looked toward the hidden compartment.

"The person who changed those records was your uncle."

Daniel froze.

"My uncle?"

Thomas nodded slowly.

"Your father's brother."

Daniel searched his memories.

His uncle Robert.

The man who disappeared shortly after his father's death.

The man everyone said left the country.

"The same person who tried to kill my mother?"

Margaret looked down.

"Yes."

Emily whispered.

"Why would he do all this?"

Thomas answered.

"Power."

The word sounded empty, but everyone understood it.

"He believed the Whitmore family belonged to him."

Daniel looked at the old documents.

"And Emily?"

Thomas looked at her.

"Your uncle discovered that your grandfather had left evidence proving Emily was the rightful heir to something he wanted."

Daniel frowned.

"Heir?"

Margaret stepped closer.

"Your grandfather created a private trust."

Daniel looked surprised.

"A trust?"

"One that could not be controlled by anyone who wanted to use the family name for personal gain."

Emily looked confused.

"What does that have to do with me?"

Margaret smiled sadly.

"Because your grandfather believed you represented the future of this family."

Daniel looked at his daughter.

He remembered every time Emily had been underestimated.

Every time people saw her kindness as weakness.

They had never understood her strength.

Robert had.

That was why he was afraid.

A sudden sound came from downstairs.

Everyone stopped.

A loud crash echoed through the mansion.

Daniel immediately moved toward Emily.

"Stay behind me."

Thomas looked toward the hallway.

"He found us."

Daniel looked at him.

"Who?"

Thomas's face became serious.

"Robert."

Claire's breathing changed.

"No."

Margaret closed her eyes.

"He was never supposed to know we found the documents."

Daniel looked toward the entrance hall.

The mansion lights flickered.

Then went dark.

Emily grabbed her father's hand.

"Dad."

"I am here."

The words came instantly.

A promise.

The kind of promise he wished he had made years earlier.

A phone vibrated on the desk.

Everyone looked at it.

It was an unknown number.

Daniel picked it up.

A distorted voice came through the speaker.

"You should have left the past buried."

Daniel's face tightened.

"Robert."

The voice laughed softly.

"You always were the stubborn one."

Daniel looked at his family.

"Where are you?"

The voice paused.

"Closer than you think."

The call ended.

Then another sound came from behind them.

A slow movement inside the hidden room.

Everyone turned.

The secret compartment behind the bookshelf was still open.

But now someone was standing inside it.

Someone who had been hiding there the entire time.

And Daniel realized the truth was even worse than he imagined.

They had not discovered the secret.

The secret had been waiting for them.

A natural next step is to continue with the following segment to reveal who was hidden in the secret room and bring the family confrontation closer to its final truth.

Nobody moved.

The figure standing inside the hidden compartment remained completely still, surrounded by the darkness of the secret room.

Daniel's first instinct was to protect Emily.

He moved in front of her immediately, placing his body between his daughter and the unknown person.

"Come out."

His voice was calm, but every muscle in his body was tense.

The person slowly stepped forward.

The light from the study window touched his face.

Daniel felt the world shift beneath his feet.

"Robert."

May you like

His uncle looked older than the man from his memories, but the cold confidence in his eyes had never changed.

Robert Whitmore smiled faintly.
