Chương 5

"She found out that he had taken something that did not belong to him."

Daniel looked confused.

"What?"

Richard looked at the baby.

"The family inheritance."

Clara frowned.

"The baby?"

Richard nodded.

"Not money."

He looked at Clara.

"Something more important."

Daniel stared at the baby.

The newborn was sleeping peacefully, unaware of the emotional storm surrounding her.

"What does she have?"

Eleanor's voice became softer.

"A connection."

Daniel shook his head.

"That doesn't make sense."

"It will," Eleanor said.

"When you understand who she is."

Clara immediately became protective.

"Who she is?"

Her voice sharpened.

"Are you saying you know something about my daughter that I don't?"

Eleanor looked at her with sadness.

"I know something that was hidden from everyone."

Clara held the baby closer.

"Then tell me."

Daniel stepped beside Clara.

This time he was not trying to control the situation.

He was standing with her.

"Yes," he said.

"Tell us."

Richard looked at both of them.

For the first time, he seemed uncertain.

He had wanted the truth revealed.

But he understood the consequences now.

"The baby's identity is connected to someone who disappeared years ago."

Daniel's heart began racing.

He already knew what name was coming.

"My mother."

Richard nodded slowly.

Daniel closed his eyes.

He wanted to deny it.

He wanted to wake up from this nightmare.

But every person in the room was confirming the impossible.

"She's alive," Daniel whispered.

Eleanor looked at him.

"Yes."

The word destroyed the last piece of certainty he had.

Daniel placed a hand against the wall for support.

He had imagined his mother's face thousands of times over the years.

He had remembered her voice.

Her smile.

The way she used to hold his hand when he was a child.

He had mourned someone who was still somewhere in the world.

"Where is she?"

Nobody answered.

Daniel looked up.

"Where is she?"

Richard took a deep breath.

"She is close."

"Close?"

Daniel's voice rose.

"After all these years, you know where she is and you never told me?"

Richard looked down.

"I did not know everything."

"But you knew enough."

Richard accepted the accusation.

"Yes."

Daniel turned away.

The anger returned, but it was mixed with a deeper pain.

A pain that came from realizing how many chances he had lost.

How many birthdays.

How many holidays.

How many ordinary moments that could never be recovered.

Clara reached for his hand.

This time, he held onto hers.

Eleanor watched them quietly.

"I wanted to tell you."

Daniel looked at her.

"Then why didn't you?"

"Because your father made sure nobody could."

Richard looked at Eleanor.

"Do not put everything on me."

Her eyes hardened.

"You made the first choice."

The room became tense again.

Daniel looked between them.

"What choice?"

Neither answered.

Daniel's voice became firm.

"No more secrets."

Richard looked at him.

Daniel stepped forward.

"No more protecting me."

His eyes moved to Eleanor.

"No more protecting anyone."

The determination in his voice changed the atmosphere.

Everyone realized the old Daniel was gone.

The man who accepted unanswered questions.

The man who believed the stories he was given.

That person was disappearing.

In his place was someone demanding the truth.

Richard slowly nodded.

"You're right."

He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small envelope.

Clara watched carefully.

"I brought this because I knew this moment would come."

Daniel looked at the envelope.

"What is it?"

Richard held it out.

"Something your mother left behind."

Daniel did not move at first.

The simple words affected him more than any document could.

Something his mother left behind.

Proof that she had existed.

Proof that she had thought about him.

His hands shook as he accepted the envelope.

He opened it slowly.

Inside was a photograph.

The moment he saw it, his breathing stopped.

It was his mother.

Older than he remembered.

But unmistakably her.

She was standing beside someone Daniel did not recognize.

And in her arms was a small child.

Daniel looked closer.

The child was a baby.

A baby with the same blanket pattern that covered Clara's newborn.

His eyes widened.

"This..."

His voice disappeared.

Clara looked at the photograph.

Richard watched Daniel carefully.

"Now you understand why the truth could not stay hidden."

Daniel looked up.

His face was filled with disbelief.

The past was no longer a memory.

It was standing directly in front of him.

And the child who had brought them all together was connected to a story that had started long before she was born.

Daniel could not take his eyes away from the photograph.

The edges were worn, showing that it had been handled many times over the years.

His thumb moved slowly across the image, almost afraid that touching it too hard would make it disappear.

"My mother kept this?"

His voice was barely audible.

Richard nodded.

"She kept many things."

Daniel looked at him.

"Then why did I never see any of them?"

Richard did not answer immediately.

Because the truth was that there was no answer that could make the years of silence acceptable.

Eleanor looked at the photograph.

"Your mother wanted to come back."

Daniel's eyes lifted.

"She wanted to?"

"Yes."

"Then why didn't she?"

Eleanor looked toward the hospital bed.

"Because she was afraid."

Daniel's expression changed.

"Afraid of what?"

Richard stepped closer.

"Of what would happen if she returned before the truth was ready to be revealed."

Daniel shook his head.

"That doesn't make sense."

Richard understood why.

It sounded like another excuse.

Another explanation created by people who had spent years making decisions without him.

"Your mother knew your father would do anything to protect his reputation."

Daniel looked at him.

"Are you saying he would hurt her?"

Richard hesitated.

"Not physically."

The hesitation bothered Daniel more than the answer.

"What does that mean?"

Eleanor spoke quietly.

"It means your father had ways of controlling people without ever raising his voice."

May you like

Daniel remembered the feeling of his childhood home.

The perfect dinners.
