Chương 3
Eleanor swallowed.
"It means the story you were given was incomplete."
Richard looked away.
He had wanted this moment for years, but now that it had arrived, he looked almost afraid.
Daniel stepped closer.
"Tell me."
Eleanor hesitated.
"Years ago, there was a decision made that changed all of your lives."
Daniel's breathing became heavier.
"Who made it?"
Nobody spoke.
Then Richard answered.
"Your father."
Daniel stared at him.
"My father?"
The name carried memories he had tried to bury.
The person who had shaped so much of his childhood.
The person whose choices had always been explained as something he would never understand.
Daniel shook his head slowly.
"No."
Richard nodded.
"Yes."
Clara looked at Daniel with concern.
She saw the pain return to his face.
Daniel had entered the hospital expecting a confrontation.
He had never expected his entire understanding of his family to collapse.
"What did he do?" Daniel asked.
Eleanor looked down at the floor.
"He made a choice because he believed it was the only way to protect the family."
Daniel laughed quietly, but there was no humor in it.
"Protect the family?"
His voice cracked.
"By destroying it?"
Richard said nothing.
Because he knew Daniel was right.
The past had been built on decisions made by people who thought they were doing the right thing.
But good intentions had still left scars.
Clara looked at the document again.
"What does the baby have to do with this?"
The question brought everyone back to the present.
Daniel looked at the child in her arms.
His expression changed.
He had been so focused on the past that he had forgotten the reason this moment mattered now.
Richard looked at Clara.
"The baby is the reason the truth could no longer stay hidden."
Clara's eyes widened.
"What are you saying?"
Before Richard could answer, the hospital room door opened slightly.
A nurse appeared in the doorway, surprised by the tense atmosphere.
"Is everything okay in here?"
Everyone immediately became silent.
Daniel looked at the nurse.
Then at the people around him.
For years, secrets had controlled their lives.
But now the truth was standing in front of them.
And there was no way to put it back.
The nurse looked from one person to another, sensing the tension but not understanding the reason behind it.
Daniel quickly folded the document and held it against his side.
"Yes," he said after a moment.
"Everything is fine."
The nurse did not look convinced.
She glanced at Clara holding the newborn and then at the men standing several feet apart.
"If you need anything, just call."
She stepped back into the hallway and gently closed the door.
The moment the room was private again, the silence returned.
Clara looked at Daniel.
"Everything is fine?"
Her voice carried disbelief.
"You just said that after someone was hit and everyone is hiding something from me."
Daniel lowered his eyes.
He knew she was right.
He had spent so much time trying to control the situation that he had forgotten Clara was the person who deserved honesty the most.
"I am sorry," he said quietly.
Clara shook her head.
"I don't need an apology."
She looked at Richard and Eleanor.
"I need the truth."
Richard stared at the floor.
For a man who had entered the room full of anger, he now looked like someone carrying a burden too heavy to hold.
Eleanor slowly walked toward the chair beside the window and sat down.
Her hands rested on her lap, but they would not stop trembling.
Daniel watched her carefully.
He wanted to believe her.
But trust was not something that could return in a single moment.
"Start from the beginning."
Eleanor nodded.
"The beginning was before you were born."
Daniel's expression changed.
He had expected answers about recent events.
He had not expected his entire family history to be connected.
"Your father was afraid," Eleanor continued.
"Afraid of what?"
"Of losing everything."
Daniel looked confused.
"He already had everything."
Eleanor gave a sad smile.
"That is what everyone thought."
Richard crossed his arms.
"Your father built a perfect image for the world."
He looked at Daniel.
"But behind that image was a man terrified of losing control."
Daniel remained silent.
The memories of his childhood came back in pieces.
The strict rules.
The arguments behind closed doors.
The moments when adults stopped talking as soon as he entered the room.
He had always believed those moments were normal.
Now he wondered how much he had never seen.
"What did he do?" Daniel asked again.
Eleanor looked at the document.
"The document you are holding contains information about what happened before your family fell apart."
Daniel looked down.
His fingers tightened around the paper.
"Why give this to me now?"
Richard answered.
"Because the baby changed everything."
Clara immediately looked at him.
"How?"
Richard took a slow breath.
"Because history was about to repeat itself."
Nobody spoke.
The words created a new kind of fear.
Clara held the baby closer.
"What does that mean?"
Richard looked at Daniel.
"Your father made a choice years ago that separated people who should have stayed together."
Daniel's face became tense.
"And now someone is trying to do the same thing?"
Richard did not answer.
That silence was enough.
Daniel stepped forward.
"Who?"
Richard looked toward Clara.
The movement was small, but Daniel noticed it.
His eyes narrowed.
"No."
Clara looked at him.
"What?"
Daniel turned toward Richard.
"You are saying this involves her."
Richard remained quiet.
Daniel's breathing became heavier.
"What does Clara have to do with my father's mistakes?"
Eleanor stood up.
"Daniel, listen carefully."
But Daniel was already overwhelmed.
He had spent years believing he understood his family.
Now every answer created more questions.
Clara looked at him.
"Daniel."
Her voice softened.
He turned toward her.
She could see the conflict inside him.
The anger.
The fear.
The need to protect her.

"I don't know what is happening," he admitted.
"But I know I don't want you and the baby dragged into something because of me."
