Chương 4

Clara looked at him for a long moment.

"You don't get to decide that alone."

Daniel looked surprised.

She continued.

"I am standing here because I choose to be."

Her eyes moved toward Richard and Eleanor.

"But I need everyone to stop treating me like I am too fragile to know the truth."

The words affected the room.

Even Richard looked at her differently.

She was no longer just the frightened woman protecting a newborn.

She was someone demanding answers.

Eleanor nodded slowly.

"You are right."

She walked closer.

"The truth should have been told from the beginning."

Daniel looked at the document again.

"What exactly is in here?"

Eleanor hesitated.

Then she answered.

"Proof."

"Of what?"

"Of what your father did."

The room became silent.

Daniel opened the document again.

This time, he forced himself to keep reading.

The first pages contained dates, names, and records.

Things he recognized.

Things he did not.

Then he saw a name that made his entire body freeze.

Clara noticed immediately.

"Daniel?"

He did not respond.

His eyes stayed on the page.

Richard saw his reaction.

"You know that name."

Daniel slowly looked up.

His face had lost all color.

"I thought she was gone."

Eleanor's expression changed.

"She was never gone."

Daniel looked at her.

"What are you saying?"

Richard moved closer, but this time there was no anger in his movement.

Only sadness.

"The person you were told you lost..."

He paused.

"Was alive."

Daniel stared at him.

The room seemed to disappear around him.

Every sound became distant.

Every memory felt uncertain.

"My mother?"

The question came out almost as a whisper.

Nobody answered immediately.

But their silence was the answer.

Daniel took a step backward.

He had spent years accepting a loss he never questioned.

He had carried grief for someone he believed was gone forever.

Now he was being told that grief had been built on a lie.

Clara reached out and touched his arm.

He barely noticed.

"Why would they tell me she was gone?"

His voice broke.

Eleanor looked away.

"Because someone believed the truth would destroy you."

Daniel shook his head.

"The lie destroyed me."

Nobody argued.

Because everyone knew it was true.

Richard looked toward the hospital bed.

"The people who made those choices thought they were protecting you."

Daniel laughed bitterly.

"Everyone keeps saying that."

He looked around the room.

"Protecting me."

His voice grew stronger.

"But nobody ever asked me what I wanted."

Clara felt tears forming in her eyes.

Not because of the secret itself.

Because she finally understood the pain Daniel had carried alone.

Richard lowered his head.

"You are right."

Daniel looked at him.

The anger between them was still there.

But something else had appeared.

Understanding.

Richard continued.

"I spent years blaming you because it was easier than accepting the truth."

Daniel did not move.

"I hated you because I thought you were the reason everything fell apart."

Richard looked directly at him.

"But I was wrong."

The admission shocked Daniel.

The man who had struck him.

The man who had entered the room filled with hatred.

Was finally admitting he had been wrong.

The baby began to cry softly.

Clara immediately looked down and comforted her.

The sound broke the tension.

For a brief moment, everyone remembered why they were there.

Not to punish the past.

But to protect the future.

Eleanor looked at Daniel.

"There is still something else you need to know."

Daniel closed his eyes.

He almost did not want another revelation.

But he opened them again.

"What?"

Eleanor looked at Clara.

Then at the baby.

"The reason your mother disappeared is connected to this child."

The words felt heavier than anything else Eleanor had said before.

Daniel stared at her, unable to understand how every answer seemed to lead to another impossible question.

"My mother disappeared because of this child?"

His voice was quiet, but everyone heard the pain underneath it.

Eleanor slowly nodded.

"Not because of the baby itself."

She looked at Clara.

"Because of what the baby represents."

Clara's expression tightened.

"I don't understand."

Richard stepped closer.

"Years ago, there was a secret that your father wanted buried forever."

Daniel looked at him.

"What secret?"

Richard glanced at Eleanor.

She closed her eyes briefly before speaking.

"The baby is connected to a family promise that was broken many years ago."

Daniel shook his head.

"That doesn't explain anything."

"No," Eleanor admitted.

"It doesn't."

She looked down at the floor.

"Because the full truth is not something that can be explained in one sentence."

Daniel felt frustration building again.

"Then explain it slowly."

Eleanor nodded.

"Your father had a brother."

Daniel froze.

He had never heard about that.

"A brother?"

Richard watched his reaction carefully.

"Yes."

Daniel searched his memory.

There was nothing.

No stories.

No photographs.

No mention of another son in the family.

"Why don't I know about him?"

Eleanor looked away.

"Because your father erased him from the family history."

The hospital room became silent.

Clara looked at Daniel.

She could see the shock spreading across his face.

"Why would someone erase their own brother?"

Daniel asked.

Richard answered.

"Because he believed his brother betrayed him."

Daniel looked between them.

"And did he?"

Nobody answered immediately.

That hesitation told Daniel more than words could.

Eleanor finally spoke.

"No."

Daniel looked at her.

"No?"

"Your father believed he was betrayed."

She took a breath.

"But the truth was more complicated."

Daniel walked slowly toward the window.

The city outside looked distant and unreal.

His entire life had been built on pieces of information chosen by other people.

He had trusted memories that were incomplete.

He had trusted stories that were carefully shaped.

Now he wondered how many other things had been hidden.

"How does this connect to my mother?"

Eleanor looked at the document.

"Your mother discovered the truth."

Daniel turned around.

"What truth?"

May you like

"She discovered that your father had made decisions that affected more than just your family."

Richard's expression became serious.
