Chương 6

Then Daniel's phone vibrated.

A new message.

Unknown number.

His body immediately became tense.

Evelyn noticed.

"What is it?"

Daniel opened the message.

This time there was no warning.

There was only an address.

And three words.

"Come alone, Daniel."

Evelyn saw his expression.

"No."

Daniel looked up.

"You know who sent it?"

She shook her head quickly.

"But I know what happens when people follow those messages."

Daniel understood.

Sarah had probably received messages like this before.

Someone had controlled the situation by making people afraid.

Daniel placed the phone on the table.

"We don't go alone."

Evelyn looked relieved.

"But if he knows we are coming together, he may disappear."

Daniel nodded.

"Exactly."

Emma looked between them.

"Are you going to leave me?"

The question stopped both adults.

Daniel immediately shook his head.

"No."

"I am not leaving you."

Emma looked down.

"Everyone leaves eventually."

Evelyn reached out and held her hand.

"Not everyone."

The words carried a sadness that came from experience.

Daniel knew they needed a plan.

They could not rush into Michael's trap.

They needed evidence.

They needed to understand why he had chosen Emma.

And they needed to know if Sarah was still connected to this mystery.

Daniel spent the next hour organizing everything they had.

The red ribbon.

The symbol from the lock.

Sarah's letter.

The information about Michael's identity change.

Each piece pointed in the same direction.

But one question remained.

Why Emma?

Daniel returned to the old photographs.

He studied Sarah's face.

She looked happy.

Young.

Full of confidence.

Nothing about the picture suggested she knew danger was approaching.

Then he noticed something.

A small mark on the back of the photograph.

A symbol.

The same symbol from the lock.

"Evelyn."

She came closer.

When she saw it, her breathing changed.

"Where did that come from?"

"It was on the back of this photo."

She took the picture carefully.

"Sarah never showed me this."

Daniel looked at the symbol.

"Do you know what it means?"

Evelyn shook her head.

"No."

"But Sarah used to draw it everywhere."

"On notebooks."

"On her bedroom wall."

"Even on letters."

Daniel felt a sudden realization.

"She wasn't hiding it."

"She was leaving a trail."

Evelyn looked at him.

"For who?"

Daniel looked toward Emma.

Maybe not for someone who knew her.

Maybe for someone who would find her later.

The possibility was frightening.

That meant Sarah might have known something would happen.

And she might have planned for someone to uncover the truth.

Daniel carefully placed the photograph with the other evidence.

"We need to find where Sarah was investigating."

Evelyn nodded.

"I have her old boxes in the garage."

They moved quickly.

The garage was filled with years of memories.

Old furniture.

Dusty containers.

Things Evelyn had kept because throwing them away felt impossible.

After searching through several boxes, they found Sarah's old backpack.

Evelyn held it against her chest.

"I haven't touched this since she disappeared."

Daniel opened it carefully.

Inside were notebooks, receipts, and a small voice recorder.

His eyes widened.

"A recorder."

Evelyn looked nervous.

"Sarah always recorded interviews when she was researching."

Daniel pressed the button.

For several seconds, there was only static.

Then a young woman's voice filled the garage.

Sarah.

Daniel and Evelyn froze.

"If someone finds this, it means I was right."

Evelyn covered her mouth.

The recording continued.

"Michael is not who everyone thinks he is."

"He has been watching families connected to missing children."

"He knows things he should not know."

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

The voice continued.

"I don't know how far this goes."

"But if anything happens to me, look for the symbol."

"It is the key."

The recording ended.

Nobody moved.

Evelyn was crying silently.

She had spent years wondering if she imagined the danger.

Now she had proof.

Daniel picked up the recorder.

Sarah had known.

She had known something was wrong.

And she had tried to leave a way for the truth to survive.

Emma walked closer.

"Was that Sarah?"

Evelyn nodded.

"Yes."

"She sounded brave."

Evelyn smiled through her tears.

"She was."

Daniel looked at the recorder.

The message from Michael suddenly made sense.

He was not afraid of Daniel.

He was afraid of what Daniel might discover.

"We need to find everything Sarah left behind."

Evelyn nodded.

They continued searching.

Hidden beneath the lining of the backpack, Daniel found a folded map.

Several locations were marked with the same symbol.

One location was circled more heavily than the others.

An old abandoned community center outside town.

Daniel recognized the name.

It had been closed for years.

"That place."

Evelyn looked at him.

"What?"

"I know it."

"People used to volunteer there."

Sarah spent a lot of time there before she disappeared."

Daniel folded the map.

"Then that is where we go."

Emma moved closer to him.

"Is that where my mom is?"

Nobody answered immediately.

The question was too heavy.

Daniel crouched beside her.

"I don't know yet."

"But we are going to find out."

Emma nodded.

She looked scared.

But she also looked determined.

For the first time since he found her, Daniel saw something stronger than fear.

He saw courage.

Before leaving, Daniel checked every window and locked every door.

He knew they were stepping closer to the truth.

And the closer they got, the more dangerous it would become.

Outside, the morning had turned gray.

The quiet neighborhood looked ordinary again.

But Daniel knew better.

Some secrets waited years to be discovered.

And some people would do anything to keep them buried.

They drove toward the abandoned community center with the evidence beside them.

Daniel kept his eyes on the road.

He knew they were no longer searching for answers.

They were walking directly into the place where the answers had been waiting all along.

The next step was to uncover what Sarah had hidden before Michael found them first.
