Chương 2

Daniel continued until the lock finally began to weaken.

Evelyn watched silently, tears forming in her eyes.

She looked toward the empty yard as if she expected someone to appear.

Someone who could explain everything.

But nobody came.

The final attempt required all of Daniel's strength.

He pressed the cutter firmly against the damaged mechanism.

The metal groaned.

The cage shook.

Emma jumped back at the sudden movement.

Then there was a loud snap.

The lock shifted.

For a moment, everyone froze.

Daniel carefully pulled the tool away.

The padlock hung loose from the door.

Emma stared at the opening as if she could not believe it was real.

"You did it," she whispered.

Daniel reached for the cage door and slowly pulled it open.

The metal hinges moved with a long creaking sound.

Emma did not immediately run out.

She stayed still, unsure if freedom was really waiting for her.

Daniel softened his expression.

"It's okay."

"You can come out."

The girl slowly moved forward.

One small step at a time.

When her feet touched the ground outside the cage, she looked down as if she was seeing the world differently.

Then she looked back at Daniel.

"Are you really going to keep me safe?"

Daniel crouched beside her.

"Yes."

"You're safe now."

Emma finally allowed herself to cry.

Not the frightened tears she had cried before.

These were tears of relief.

She stepped forward and hugged him tightly.

Daniel froze for a second, then gently placed his hand on her shoulder.

Evelyn watched the two of them, overwhelmed by emotion.

But something in the yard still bothered her.

She looked at the cage.

Then at the broken lock.

Then toward the quiet street beyond the fence.

"Daniel," she said quietly.

He looked up.

"What if whoever did this comes back?"

The question changed the atmosphere instantly.

Daniel looked around the empty yard again.

The danger was not gone.

The cage was open, but the mystery had only begun.

Emma held onto his arm tightly.

Daniel looked at the frightened child beside him and made a silent promise.

He would find out who had put her there.

And he would make sure nobody ever locked her away again.

Daniel looked at Emma and knew that leaving the yard was no longer as simple as walking away.

The open cage sat behind them like a reminder of what had happened, but the truth behind it was still hidden somewhere in the quiet neighborhood.

Evelyn moved closer, her eyes fixed on the little girl.

"Emma, do you remember anything before you were brought here?"

The girl lowered her gaze.

Her fingers tightened around Daniel's sleeve.

"I remember a car."

Daniel and Evelyn exchanged a quick look.

"What kind of car?" Daniel asked gently.

Emma closed her eyes, trying to search through the fear and confusion in her memory.

"It was dark."

"I think it was black."

"There was a man driving."

Her voice became quieter.

"I couldn't see his face."

Daniel felt anger rising inside him, but he pushed it down.

Emma had already experienced enough fear.

He needed to be calm.

"What else do you remember?"

Emma looked toward the cage.

"He kept saying that nobody would believe me."

Evelyn's expression changed.

The color seemed to leave her face.

Daniel noticed immediately.

"Mrs. Carter?"

She looked away.

For several seconds, she said nothing.

Then she slowly stepped back.

"I need to tell you something."

Daniel stood up.

"What is it?"

Evelyn looked toward the house.

"I thought it was over."

The words made the air feel heavier.

Emma moved closer to Daniel.

"What's over?"

Evelyn looked at the child with sadness in her eyes.

"Years ago, someone else disappeared from this neighborhood."

Daniel watched her carefully.

"Who?"

"My daughter."

The silence that followed felt almost unbearable.

Emma looked confused.

Daniel studied Evelyn's face, trying to understand.

"Your daughter disappeared?"

Evelyn nodded slowly.

"She was nineteen years old."

"Everyone thought she ran away."

"But I never believed that."

She looked toward the cage again.

"Because before she disappeared, she told me someone was watching her."

Daniel felt a chill move through him.

"Did you report it?"

"I did."

"The police searched for weeks."

"But they found nothing."

Evelyn's voice cracked.

"After a while, people stopped looking."

Daniel glanced at Emma.

A young girl trapped in a cage.

An elderly woman with a missing daughter.

A mystery buried for years.

Something connected them.

"What was your daughter's name?"

Evelyn swallowed.

"Sarah."

Emma suddenly looked up.

The reaction was small, but Daniel noticed.

"Emma?"

The girl looked nervous.

"I heard that name."

Evelyn stepped forward.

"Where?"

Emma looked toward the ground.

"The man who locked me here."

Daniel crouched beside her.

"What did he say?"

Emma rubbed her hands together.

"He said Sarah made the same mistake."

Evelyn froze.

Her breathing stopped for a moment.

Daniel immediately saw the pain in her face.

"Did he say anything else?"

Emma shook her head.

"I was scared."

"I covered my ears."

Evelyn turned away, trying to hide her emotions.

Daniel understood that the past had just returned to her.

But this time, there was a child standing in the middle of it.

"We need to get Emma somewhere safe," Daniel said.

Evelyn nodded.

"Yes."

Daniel looked around the yard one more time.

The person responsible could still be nearby.

He carefully picked up the loose lock from the cage door.

He wanted to preserve anything that could explain what happened.

The metal was scratched and damaged, but there was something unusual.

A small symbol had been carved into the surface.

Daniel held it closer.

"What is that?"

Evelyn looked at it.

Her face changed again.

"You recognize it?" Daniel asked.

She hesitated.

Then she nodded.

"Sarah drew that symbol when she was a child."

Daniel stared at her.

"Why would it be on this lock?"

Evelyn had no answer.

May you like

The question seemed to frighten her more than anything else.

A sudden sound came from the street.
