Chương 4

Emma walked back into the room wearing the borrowed clothes.

She looked younger without the fear covering her face.

But the sadness was still there.

Daniel smiled gently.

"How do you feel?"

She shrugged.

"Different."

"Different how?"

Emma looked around the room.

"Like I don't have to listen for someone coming."

Daniel looked away for a moment.

The pain in that sentence was impossible to ignore.

Evelyn sat beside Emma.

"Do you remember how long you were there?"

Emma thought carefully.

"Maybe two days."

"Maybe longer."

"I don't know."

Daniel frowned.

"Only two days?"

Emma nodded.

"The man kept moving me."

"He said people were looking for me."

"Who was looking for you?"

Emma's eyes became nervous again.

"He said my family."

Daniel and Evelyn exchanged a look.

"But I don't have family," Emma whispered.

The room became quiet.

Daniel sat down across from her.

"Emma, do you know where you came from?"

The girl looked at her hands.

"I remember a house."

"What kind of house?"

"A big one."

"With a white fence."

Daniel felt something familiar about the description.

"Was anyone there?"

Emma shook her head.

"Sometimes I heard voices."

"But I don't remember faces."

Evelyn leaned forward.

"How did you meet the man?"

Emma looked frightened again.

"He told me he knew my mother."

Daniel's expression changed.

"Your mother?"

Emma nodded slowly.

"He said she left me behind."

The words broke something inside Evelyn.

She looked at the floor.

Daniel saw the pain in her face.

Not because Emma's story was the same as Sarah's.

Because it sounded like someone had been repeating the same cruelty for years.

"Did he tell you his name?" Daniel asked.

Emma hesitated.

Then she whispered.

"Michael."

Evelyn suddenly stood up.

The chair moved loudly against the floor.

"What did you say?"

Emma looked startled.

"Michael."

Evelyn covered her mouth.

Daniel immediately noticed.

"You know someone named Michael?"

Evelyn looked at him with fear in her eyes.

"Sarah had a friend named Michael."

"Before she disappeared."

"Who was he?"

Evelyn walked toward the window.

"He was kind."

"Everyone trusted him."

"But Sarah stopped talking about him near the end."

"Why?"

Evelyn's voice became quieter.

"Because she said he changed."

Daniel felt a cold realization forming.

"Do you know his last name?"

Evelyn closed her eyes.

"Walker."

Daniel immediately reached for his phone.

He searched through old records he had access to through his work connections.

Evelyn watched him.

"What are you doing?"

"Finding out if Michael Walker is still here."

The search took only a few minutes.

Then Daniel stopped.

His face changed.

"What did you find?" Evelyn asked.

Daniel turned the phone around.

A recent property record appeared.

Michael Walker.

The name was still active.

The address was less than ten miles away.

Evelyn stepped closer.

"He's alive?"

Daniel nodded.

Emma looked between them.

"Is he the man who hurt me?"

Daniel did not answer immediately.

He wanted to be honest without frightening her.

"We don't know yet."

"But we will find out."

That night, nobody slept easily.

Daniel stayed awake in the living room, studying every detail they had collected.

The ribbon.

The symbol.

The lock.

The name Michael Walker.

Everything connected somehow.

Near midnight, his phone suddenly vibrated.

A message appeared from an unknown number.

Daniel opened it.

His blood ran cold.

There was only one sentence.

"Stop searching for what was buried."

Attached was a picture.

Daniel stared at the screen.

It was a photo of his house.

Taken only minutes earlier.

He immediately stood up and looked through the window.

The street outside was empty.

But he knew someone had been there.

Someone close enough to watch.

Someone close enough to send a warning.

Daniel quietly walked toward the front door.

He knew the next move had to be careful, because whoever had hidden the truth for decades was now watching him uncover it.

Daniel kept his hand on the doorknob for several seconds.

Every instinct told him not to open it.

Whoever had taken the picture wanted him to know they were close.

They wanted him afraid.

But fear was exactly what had allowed the truth to stay hidden for so many years.

Slowly, Daniel stepped away from the door.

He turned off the lights in the living room and moved toward the window beside the hallway.

The street remained empty.

The quiet was almost worse than a confrontation.

He searched for movement between the parked cars and dark corners of the neighborhood.

Nothing.

But Daniel knew better than to assume nobody was there.

He returned to the table where Evelyn and Emma were waiting.

Evelyn immediately saw his expression.

"What happened?"

Daniel placed the phone down.

"Someone was outside."

Emma's face changed instantly.

The fear returned.

Daniel noticed and lowered himself beside her.

"Hey."

"I'm still here."

Emma looked at him.

"Is he coming back?"

Daniel wanted to say no.

He wanted to promise her that everything would be fine.

But he knew promises without truth could hurt more than silence.

"I won't let anyone take you."

Emma nodded slowly.

She believed him.

That trust made Daniel more determined than ever.

Evelyn picked up the phone and looked at the message.

Her hands shook.

"He knows."

Daniel nodded.

"Yes."

"He knows we found something."

Evelyn looked toward the hallway.

"Maybe we should stop."

Daniel looked at her in surprise.

"Stop?"

She swallowed.

"I lost my daughter because I kept searching."

"I don't want Emma to lose her chance at a normal life because of me."

Daniel studied her face.

He saw exhaustion.

Twenty years of carrying pain had finally caught up with her.

But he also saw something else.

A mother who had never truly given up.

"Mrs. Carter, whoever did this already changed Emma's life."

"The only way to give her a future is to find the truth."

Evelyn looked down.

"You sound like Sarah."

Daniel paused.

"What do you mean?"

May you like

"She talked like that."

"She always believed the truth was worth fighting for."
