Chương 5

Emma quietly listened.

She looked at Evelyn.

"Was Sarah nice?"

A tear appeared in Evelyn's eye.

"She was the kindest person I ever knew."

"She would have wanted you safe."

Emma looked at the floor.

"I wish I remembered my mom."

The room became silent.

Daniel felt the weight of those words.

A child searching for memories that should have belonged to her.

A woman searching for a daughter who never came home.

Two lives connected by someone else's secrets.

Daniel picked up the red ribbon bag.

"We need to find Michael Walker."

Evelyn nodded slowly.

"Where do we start?"

Daniel looked at the address on his phone.

"His house."

"No."

Evelyn immediately shook her head.

Daniel looked at her.

"You know something."

She hesitated.

Then she walked to an old cabinet near the living room wall.

From inside, she removed a small wooden box.

She carried it back to the table and opened it carefully.

Inside were old photographs, letters, and newspaper clippings.

Daniel watched as she lifted a faded picture.

It showed a young woman standing beside a man.

Sarah.

And Michael Walker.

Emma leaned closer.

"That's him?"

Evelyn nodded.

"Yes."

Daniel studied the picture.

Michael looked younger.

Friendly.

Normal.

The kind of person nobody would suspect.

But Daniel had learned that appearances could hide the darkest things.

Evelyn pulled out a folded letter.

"I found this after Sarah disappeared."

"Why didn't you show it to the police?"

"Because I was afraid they wouldn't believe me."

Daniel unfolded the paper carefully.

The handwriting was shaky.

Mom,

If anything happens to me, don't trust Michael.

He knows more than he says.

I thought I could help him, but I was wrong.

Please forgive me.

Daniel read the words again.

A cold feeling moved through him.

Sarah had known something.

Something serious enough that she believed she might disappear.

Evelyn covered her face.

"I should have protected her."

Daniel placed the letter down.

"You were trying."

"No."

Her voice cracked.

"I was her mother."

"I should have known."

Emma reached across the table and touched Evelyn's hand.

The simple gesture surprised her.

"You tried to find her."

Evelyn looked at the child.

Emma gave a small nod.

"That means you loved her."

For the first time that night, Evelyn allowed herself to cry.

Not from fear.

From hearing the words she had needed for decades.

Daniel looked away, giving them a private moment.

But his mind was already working.

Michael Walker was not just connected to Sarah.

He was connected to Emma.

The next morning, Daniel woke before sunrise.

He barely slept.

The message from the unknown number stayed in his mind.

Someone had access to information.

Someone was watching.

He prepared coffee quietly while Emma slept on the couch under the blanket.

Evelyn sat nearby, looking through Sarah's old belongings.

Daniel placed a cup beside her.

"Any sleep?"

She shook her head.

"Not really."

He sat across from her.

"Do you know why Michael and Sarah stopped being friends?"

Evelyn looked through the old photographs.

"Sarah told me he became obsessed with proving something."

"She said he believed people were hiding the truth from him."

"What truth?"

Evelyn looked uncertain.

"I don't know."

"She never told me."

Daniel looked at the letter again.

"Maybe Emma is part of that truth."

Before Evelyn could respond, Emma suddenly woke up.

Her eyes opened wide.

For a moment, she looked confused.

Then she remembered where she was.

Daniel noticed the fear return.

"Good morning."

Emma looked around.

"Did he come back?"

"No."

"He didn't."

She relaxed slightly.

Daniel prepared breakfast while Emma sat at the table.

It was a normal moment.

Almost.

But nobody in the room felt normal anymore.

After breakfast, Daniel made a decision.

They could not go directly to Michael's house without knowing what they were walking into.

They needed information first.

He contacted an old friend who worked with public records.

Within an hour, he received a call.

"Daniel, I found something strange about Michael Walker."

"What?"

"He changed his name years ago."

Daniel became still.

"From what?"

The voice on the phone lowered.

"Michael Reed."

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

She immediately understood.

"Reed," she whispered.

"That was Sarah's last investigation."

Daniel listened carefully.

"What investigation?"

The answer made his expression harden.

"Twenty years ago, Sarah was looking into missing children reports."

Daniel looked toward Emma.

The pieces were finally beginning to connect.

Michael Walker had not been hiding one secret.

He had been hiding a pattern.

And now Daniel knew the next step was clear: uncover Michael Walker's secret before confronting him and risking Emma's safety.

Daniel stared at the notes in front of him, trying to understand how many lives had been affected by the secrets surrounding Michael Walker.

A man who had once appeared harmless had been hiding behind different names and different stories.

The more Daniel learned, the clearer it became that Emma's rescue was not an isolated event.

It was connected to something much larger.

Evelyn looked at him carefully.

"What did your friend say exactly?"

Daniel put the phone down.

"He said Michael Walker used to be Michael Reed."

"Years ago, Sarah was investigating missing children."

Evelyn's face tightened.

"She never told me she was investigating children."

Daniel looked at the old letter again.

"Maybe she was trying to protect you."

Evelyn shook her head.

"She always thought she could handle everything herself."

Daniel understood that kind of person.

Someone who carried problems alone because they believed protecting others was more important than protecting themselves.

Emma sat quietly at the table, listening.

"Did Sarah help children?"

Evelyn looked at her.

"I think she tried."

Emma lowered her eyes.

"Maybe she tried to help me too."

The sadness in her voice filled the room.

Daniel walked over and sat beside her.

"Emma, listen to me."

"You are not a problem someone had to fix."

"You are someone who deserved to be protected."

May you like

Emma looked at him.

For a moment, she seemed to believe it.
