Chương 8

The strange part was not that they were walking toward a secret.

The strange part was that they were walking together.

Years of resentment had created invisible walls between them.

Now, for a few minutes, those walls were cracked.

Mia followed slowly behind Elena, holding her mother’s hand.

She looked at the adults.

“Are we fixing something?”

The question stopped everyone.

Elena looked down.

“What makes you ask that?”

Mia shrugged.

“Grandpa fixes things.”

Stallone almost smiled.

He looked at the child.

“Sometimes things need more than fixing.”

Mia thought about that.

“Like cake?”

Nobody expected the small laugh that escaped Elena.

Even Evelyn smiled slightly.

A real smile.

Brief.

Almost unfamiliar.

They reached the upstairs office.

The room had barely changed.

Dark wood shelves.

Old books.

A desk that Evelyn kept perfectly organized.

She opened a cabinet and removed a small audio player.

Stallone noticed something.

“You kept it here.”

Evelyn nodded.

“Why?”

“Because throwing it away felt wrong.”

She placed the player on the desk.

“But listening felt worse.”

Nobody questioned that.

Some truths were easier to carry than discover.

Stallone inserted the device.

The machine clicked.

Then nothing happened.

Evelyn closed her eyes.

For a moment, everyone waited.

Then a low sound appeared.

Static.

A voice.

Older.

Distorted.

But recognizable.

Michael Harper.

Elena covered her mouth.

Her father’s voice filled the room.

“If you are hearing this, then something happened before I could finish what I started.”

Elena grabbed the edge of the desk.

She had heard old videos of him.

Family recordings.

Birthday messages.

But this was different.

This was not a father talking to his daughter.

This was a man who believed he might not get another chance.

“I need to be careful with what I say.”

Static interrupted.

Then his voice returned.

“Daniel is not working alone.”

Stallone went still.

Elena looked at him.

The recording continued.

“I don’t know who else is involved, but I know the money trail does not end with him.”

A pause.

The sound of movement in the background.

Michael sounded nervous.

“Evelyn thinks she can handle this herself.”

Evelyn lowered her eyes.

“She always thinks she can.”

Elena looked at her mother.

The recording continued.

“But she doesn’t understand what kind of people she is dealing with.”

Stallone stepped closer.

His jaw tightened.

Michael’s voice became quieter.

“If anything happens to me, I need Elena away from this.”

The machine clicked.

Static.

Then another voice appeared.

Not Michael.

Someone else.

A man.

The recording was unclear.

But the first words were enough.

“You should have left it alone.”

Elena froze.

Stallone looked at Evelyn.

The older woman looked just as shocked.

She had never heard that part.

The recording continued.

Michael’s breathing became faster.

“I know what you did.”

The unknown man laughed softly.

“You don’t know anything.”

The sound cut out.

Then returned.

Michael spoke again.

“If Elena ever hears this, tell her I was sorry.”

The words nearly broke Elena.

She turned away.

Stallone reached toward her.

She did not take his hand.

Not because she rejected him.

Because she was trying to stay standing.

The recording ended.

Nobody moved.

The silence afterward felt heavier than the voices.

Mia looked confused.

She had not understood the words.

Only the sadness.

She walked toward Elena and wrapped her arms around her leg.

Elena looked down.

Then she crouched and held her daughter.

For years, she had wondered whether her father left because he wanted to.

Now she knew he had been afraid.

That was not the same thing.

But it still hurt.

Stallone replayed the final seconds.

The unknown voice.

The threat.

The certainty.

“There’s more,” he said.

Evelyn looked at him.

“What?”

“The recording.”

“It ended.”

“No.”

He pointed at the device.

“The tape didn’t stop because the conversation ended.”

He pressed a button.

The machine moved again.

A faint sound appeared.

Not voices.

A door.

Footsteps.

Then a whisper.

Almost too quiet to hear.

But clear enough.

One sentence.

“He knows about the granddaughter.”

Nobody breathed.

Elena looked at Mia.

Stallone’s face changed completely.

Because suddenly the past was no longer only about money.

It was about a child who had not even been born when the danger began.

And someone had been watching her family for much longer than anyone realized.

And someone had been watching her family for much longer than anyone realized.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The sentence from the recording remained in the room like a physical thing.

He knows about the granddaughter.

Mia was still holding Elena’s hand.

She did not understand why every adult had suddenly become quiet.

She only knew that quiet usually meant something was wrong.

Stallone lowered the volume.

“Everyone leaves the room except us.”

Evelyn looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because we don’t know who else needs to hear this.”

The old instinct returned to his voice.

Command.

Control.

But this time Elena noticed something different.

He was not trying to dominate the room.

He was trying to protect it.

Evelyn nodded.

Within minutes, the mansion staff had been asked to leave the upstairs area.

The bodyguards checked the hallways.

Not because they expected someone to appear.

Because after hearing that recording, nobody wanted to assume safety.

Elena sat with Mia on the couch.

Her daughter played quietly with her crayons.

The drawing from earlier was still nearby.

Three people.

A house.

A large pink shape.

A family that looked whole.

Stallone stood by the window.

He watched the driveway.

“What are we missing?” he asked.

Nobody answered.

Because that was the question everyone had been avoiding.

Evelyn sat across from them.

“I thought it was over.”

Elena looked at her.

“What was?”

“Everything.”

Her fingers moved slightly against the table.

“When Michael died, I believed Daniel was the threat.”

“And now?”

Evelyn looked at the recorder.

“Now I think Daniel was only a piece.”

Stallone turned.

“You knew he was involved.”

“Yes.”

The answer came quickly.

Too quickly.

Elena’s expression changed.

May you like

“You knew.”

“I suspected.”
