Chương 7

Elena stopped.

She looked up.

“No.”

The word was barely audible.

Stallone moved closer.

She looked back at the letter.

Michael’s words continued.

I don’t know who I can trust anymore.

I know what I found.

I know what Daniel has been doing.

But I also know that exposing him will hurt more than just him.

There was a pause.

The next sentence was underlined.

Protect Elena.

Elena stopped reading.

The paper lowered slowly.

Her breathing changed.

“He knew.”

Evelyn nodded.

“He knew you would be caught in the middle.”

“My father was afraid for me?”

“Yes.”

“Then why did nobody tell me?”

Evelyn’s face changed.

Because there was no good answer.

“Because I was afraid.”

The admission came quietly.

Not dramatically.

Not like a confession.

Like something she hated saying.

“Of Daniel?”

“No.”

Evelyn looked at Elena.

“Of losing you.”

The room became silent.

Elena had spent years believing her mother did not care enough.

Now she was faced with something more complicated.

Maybe her mother had cared.

Maybe she had cared badly.

Maybe love without honesty could still destroy people.

Stallone picked up another document from the box.

“What is this?”

Evelyn looked at it.

“That is the reason I moved the money.”

He unfolded it.

A transfer agreement.

A signature.

A date.

Three weeks earlier.

Elena leaned closer.

“What am I looking at?”

“Your father left something behind.”

“Money?”

“No.”

Evelyn shook her head.

“Evidence.”

Stallone looked at her.

“Evidence of what?”

“Daniel’s involvement.”

Nobody spoke.

Then Elena noticed something.

A name on the document.

Not Daniel.

Someone else.

Someone still alive.

“Who is this?”

Evelyn’s expression changed.

She had been preparing herself for this moment.

“I don’t know yet.”

Elena looked at her.

“You don’t know?”

“No.”

The answer seemed impossible.

“You’ve had this for years.”

“I had pieces.”

Evelyn touched the document.

“Not enough to understand.”

Stallone frowned.

“What changed three weeks ago?”

Evelyn looked at him.

“The person who helped Daniel back then contacted me.”

“Who?”

Evelyn hesitated.

The hesitation scared Elena more than the answer.

“Someone inside our family.”

The words landed quietly.

But they carried more danger than shouting.

Mia dropped a crayon.

Everyone looked over.

She picked it up herself.

Then she continued drawing.

A small moment.

A normal moment.

The kind of moment everyone in the room wished they could return to.

Stallone looked at Evelyn.

“Who contacted you?”

Evelyn swallowed.

“I don’t know if I should tell you.”

His eyes narrowed.

“Why?”

“Because if I’m wrong, I destroy someone’s life.”

“And if you’re right?”

Evelyn looked toward Mia.

“Then that person has already spent years destroying ours.”

Nobody moved.

The old family silence returned.

But this time it was different.

It was no longer hiding the truth.

It was waiting for someone to finally say it.

Evelyn reached into the box again.

She removed one final item.

A small recording device.

Old.

Scratched.

But intact.

“I found this with your father’s things.”

Stallone stared at it.

“Does it work?”

“I don’t know.”

Evelyn looked at Elena.

“I was too afraid to find out.”

For the first time, Elena saw something she had never seen in her mother before.

Not weakness.

Not guilt.

Fear.

Real fear.

And somewhere beneath all the anger she still carried, Elena understood one thing.

Whatever had happened years ago had never ended.

It had only been waiting.

The old recording device sat in Evelyn’s hand like something that belonged to another life.

Nobody spoke.

The mansion had always been full of expensive things.

Paintings.

Furniture.

Objects chosen because they represented success.

But this small scratched device looked like the only honest thing in the entire house.

Stallone reached for it.

Evelyn pulled her hand back.

Not quickly.

Not defensively.

Just enough to show hesitation.

“Where did you get this?” he asked.

“In your brother’s old storage room.”

Stallone’s expression changed.

“You went there?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Three weeks ago.”

Elena looked between them.

“What storage room?”

Neither answered immediately.

That worried her.

She had spent her childhood surrounded by adults who believed silence was the same as protection.

It had never worked.

“Stop doing that,” she said.

Evelyn looked at her.

“Doing what?”

“Looking at each other like there is another conversation happening that I’m not allowed to hear.”

The words were quiet.

But they carried years of frustration.

Stallone looked down.

“She’s right.”

Evelyn placed the recorder on the table.

“Daniel kept things.”

“What things?”

“Information.”

The answer was vague.

Elena shook her head.

“That’s not an answer.”

“No.”

Evelyn looked at the device.

“It’s the truth I have.”

Stallone picked it up carefully.

“There is a chance this doesn’t work.”

“I know.”

“There is a chance it contains nothing.”

“I know.”

“There is a chance it changes everything.”

Evelyn looked at him.

“Yes.”

He studied her face.

For years, he had thought Evelyn’s greatest strength was her certainty.

Now he wondered if certainty had always been a mask.

A way to hide how often she was afraid.

“Why now?” he asked.

She looked confused.

“What?”

“You had this for years.”

“I told you.”

“You were afraid.”

“Yes.”

“But something changed.”

Evelyn looked toward the hallway.

Toward the room where Mia had been sleeping the night before.

Her eyes stayed there longer than necessary.

“I saw her run to you.”

Elena frowned.

“Mia?”

Evelyn nodded.

“She didn’t run away from me because she hated me.”

Nobody expected the honesty.

“She ran because she knew who made her feel safe.”

Evelyn looked down.

“I realized I spent years trying to control everyone because I thought losing control meant losing everything.”

Her voice became quieter.

“And I lost people anyway.”

Elena looked away.

She did not want to forgive her mother.

Not yet.

Maybe not ever.

But she could recognize pain.

The same way she recognized it in herself.

Stallone examined the recorder.

“Do we have a way to listen to this?”

Evelyn nodded.

“An old audio player.”

“Where?”

May you like

“Upstairs.”

The three of them moved through the mansion together.
