Chương 5

Stallone studied every page.

“She was moving money,” he said.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

The attorney tapped one document.

“This transfer happened after she discovered something.”

“What?”

The attorney looked uncomfortable.

“A medical record.”

Stallone looked up.

“What does that have to do with money?”

“I don’t know.”

He slid another paper across the desk.

“But I think Evelyn does.”

Stallone stared at the page.

The name at the top was familiar.

It was a name he had not seen in years.

A name connected to a part of the family everyone had agreed never to discuss again.

And for the first time since the birthday party, Stallone wondered if the broken cake had only been the beginning.

And for the first time since the birthday party, Stallone wondered if the broken cake had only been the beginning.

He stayed in the attorney’s office long after the conversation ended.

The documents remained spread across the desk.

Numbers.

Names.

Dates.

Pieces of a story that refused to connect.

Stallone had spent most of his life recognizing danger before other people noticed it.

It was a skill built from years of watching people lie.

Not because he enjoyed suspicion.

Because trusting the wrong person had always carried a price.

But this was different.

The person hiding something was Evelyn.

And despite everything that had happened, despite the anger he still carried, part of him knew she was not the kind of person who moved millions of dollars without a reason.

She was cruel.

She was controlling.

She could be selfish.

But she was rarely careless.

“What name was on the medical record?” Stallone asked.

His attorney looked at the paper again.

“I don’t want to guess.”

“You’re not guessing.”

“I’m telling you I need more information before I make an accusation.”

Stallone leaned back.

That answer would have annoyed him years ago.

Now it reminded him that rushing forward was not always the same as moving forward.

“Get the information,” he said.

The attorney nodded.

“And don’t involve Evelyn yet.”

Stallone looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because if she’s hiding something to protect herself, she’ll react one way.”

He pointed at the documents.

“But if she’s hiding something to protect someone else, she’ll react differently.”

Stallone said nothing.

Because that possibility bothered him.

He had spent the last twenty-four hours seeing Evelyn as a woman who hurt a child because she wanted control.

He had not considered that she might also be afraid.

Fear did not excuse what she did.

But fear explained things.

And explanations mattered.

When Stallone arrived at Elena’s house that evening, Mia was sitting on the living room floor surrounded by crayons.

She had drawn a picture.

Most of it was impossible to identify.

There were circles.

Lines.

A large pink shape.

And several people standing together.

Elena looked at it.

“Who is this?”

Mia pointed.

“Mommy.”

Then another figure.

“Grandpa.”

Another.

“Me.”

Elena smiled.

“And Grandma?”

Mia became quiet.

The crayon stopped moving.

She looked at the paper.

“She was sitting.”

The answer was simple.

But it carried something heavier.

Children noticed more than adults wanted to believe.

They noticed who stood.

They noticed who left.

They noticed who stayed silent.

Stallone sat beside Mia.

“Can I see?”

She handed him the drawing.

“You made everyone tall.”

Mia looked proud.

“Because everyone is big.”

Stallone smiled slightly.

“Even you?”

She nodded.

“I’m big too.”

Elena watched them.

For a moment, the room felt normal.

No arguments.

No family history.

No hidden documents.

Just a grandfather and a child coloring on the floor.

Then Elena’s phone rang.

She looked at the screen.

Her face changed.

Stallone noticed immediately.

“Who is it?”

She hesitated.

“Mom.”

Nobody moved.

Mia looked up.

Elena stepped into the kitchen before answering.

“Hello?”

There was a long pause.

Then Evelyn spoke.

Her voice sounded different.

Not weak.

Evelyn Whitmore did not sound weak.

But she sounded tired.

“I need to talk to you.”

Elena looked toward the living room.

“I don’t know if I want to.”

“I understand.”

That answer surprised her.

Evelyn rarely accepted rejection.

“I’m not calling to defend what happened.”

Elena leaned against the counter.

“Then why are you calling?”

Another pause.

“I found something.”

Elena closed her eyes.

“What?”

“I should have told you years ago.”

The words created a silence between them.

Not because they were dramatic.

Because they sounded impossible.

Evelyn did not admit mistakes from years ago.

She buried them.

She polished over them.

She pretended they had never existed.

“What did you find?” Elena asked.

“I didn’t find it.”

Evelyn’s voice lowered.

“Your father left it.”

Elena stopped.

Her father had been gone for more than a decade.

There were parts of him she remembered clearly.

The smell of his jackets.

The way he sang badly while cooking.

The habit he had of checking the front door twice before sleeping.

There were also parts she barely remembered.

The arguments.

The distance.

The final year when everyone seemed angry all the time.

“What did he leave?”

Evelyn did not answer immediately.

“That’s why I need you to come here.”

Elena looked toward Stallone.

He was watching her from the living room.

He already knew something had changed.

“I’m not coming alone,” Elena said.

“I assumed you wouldn’t.”

The call ended.

For several seconds, Elena remained still.

Stallone walked into the kitchen.

“What happened?”

“My mother wants us to go to the mansion.”

He studied her face.

“And you’re considering it.”

Elena hated that he knew her so well.

“I need answers.”

“Answers can be dangerous.”

“So can not knowing.”

He looked away.

Because she was right.

The next morning, they returned to the mansion.

It felt different.

Not because anything had changed physically.

The same walls surrounded them.

The same furniture sat beneath the porch.

The same gate opened when they arrived.

But the place no longer felt like Evelyn’s kingdom.

It felt like a house where something buried was waiting to be uncovered.

May you like

Evelyn was already inside.

She stood near the dining table.
