Chương 7

He liked restaurants where nobody knew him.

He preferred quiet neighborhoods.

He avoided places connected to his past.

Yet whoever sent this message wanted her to go somewhere ordinary.

That made it worse.

Ordinary places were where people hid things.

“Emily?”

Richard’s voice pulled her back.

She looked up.

He had seen the expression on her face.

“What did they send?”

She locked the phone.

The instinct came before the decision.

Hide it.

Protect the information.

Control the next moment.

Then she saw her father watching her, and she hated how familiar the feeling was.

She had spent her entire life learning from him.

Including the things she never wanted to become.

“An address,” she said.

Richard’s face tightened.

“Whose?”

“I don’t know.”

“That is not an answer.”

She almost laughed.

The words sounded exactly like him.

“No,” she said.

“It is the answer.”

Richard looked toward the doors.

“We need to leave.”

Emily watched him.

There it was again.

The immediate movement toward action.

A plan.

A decision.

A direction.

Anything except standing still with uncertainty.

“Why?”

Richard looked at her.

“Because someone who knows about the original document is trying to get you alone.”

“And?”

“And that is dangerous.”

Emily held his gaze.

“You said that six months ago.”

“You said you needed time.”

“You said you were protecting me.”

Richard’s expression hardened.

“This is different.”

“Is it?”

The question stayed between them.

Claire quietly stepped closer.

“Emily is right about one thing.”

Richard looked at her.

Claire continued.

“If someone wanted her gone, they would not be inviting her to find something.”

Emily turned toward her.

“Then what are they doing?”

Claire looked at the address on the phone.

“They are forcing a choice.”

That answer bothered Emily because it sounded true.

Daniel had always understood choices.

He knew how to make people feel like they were deciding freely while quietly removing every other option.

She remembered small moments now.

Not the dramatic ones.

The ordinary ones.

Daniel asking where she would be before she had decided.

Daniel remembering details she had never told him.

Daniel appearing with solutions before she admitted there was a problem.

At the time, she thought those things meant he cared.

Now she wondered how much of love was just information in the wrong hands.

“I’m going,” Emily said.

Richard immediately shook his head.

“No.”

The speed of his response surprised her.

Not because he disagreed.

Because he sounded afraid.

“Why?”

“Because I said so.”

The words came out before he could soften them.

Emily stared at him.

Richard noticed.

He looked almost embarrassed.

“I didn’t mean—”

“Yes, you did.”

She looked down at the phone.

“For years, that worked.”

“You told me something was too complicated.”

“You told me something was too painful.”

“You told me something was for my own good.”

She looked back at him.

“And I believed you.”

Richard’s face changed.

Not anger.

Pain.

But Emily could not let that pain erase what happened.

“I am done believing people just because they love me.”

The sentence hurt both of them.

Claire looked away.

A strange silence followed.

Not because nobody had anything to say.

Because everyone had too much.

Richard lowered his voice.

“If you go, you do not go alone.”

Emily looked at him.

“No.”

“Emily.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“You do not get to bring me into another room full of people who know more than me.”

Richard opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Because he knew.

That had been the pattern.

Even now, he was trying to solve the problem by surrounding her with people who could explain her own life to her.

Claire looked at Emily.

“I’ll go.”

Emily turned.

Claire’s offer surprised her.

“Why?”

Claire looked down at the bouquet still in her hands.

She finally placed it on the nearest table.

“I spent years letting Daniel decide what I was allowed to know.”

Her voice was quiet.

“I’m not doing that again.”

Emily studied her.

She wanted to trust her.

That was the problem.

Wanting something did not make it safe.

Richard looked at Claire.

“You understand what you are risking?”

Claire gave a tired smile.

“Richard, I lost my marriage.”

“I lost my money.”

“I lost years believing I was the problem.”

She looked at him.

“I think I understand risk.”

Nobody spoke after that.

The estate staff eventually convinced the remaining guests to leave.

The explanations were carefully chosen.

A family emergency.

A private matter.

An unfortunate situation.

Words designed to make strangers comfortable.

Emily hated that too.

Her life had collapsed publicly, but everyone still wanted to package it politely.

Twenty minutes later, she sat in the back seat of Claire’s car outside the estate.

Richard stood beside the open door.

He looked like he wanted to say something important.

For once, he seemed unsure what words could survive.

“Emily.”

She looked at him.

“I am sorry.”

The apology was simple.

Almost painfully simple.

She wanted it to fix something.

She wanted one sentence to repair years of choices.

It could not.

“I believe you are.”

Richard nodded slightly.

That hurt him more than anger would have.

Because forgiveness was not the same as trust.

The car pulled away.

For several minutes, nobody spoke.

Claire drove with both hands on the wheel.

The radio remained off.

The silence between them was not comfortable, but it was honest.

Finally, Claire said, “You should know something.”

Emily looked out the window.

“What?”

“I did not come to the wedding because I wanted to expose Daniel.”

“Then why?”

Claire took a breath.

“Because I thought he was going to disappear.”

Emily turned toward her.

“What?”

Claire kept her eyes on the road.

“Two days ago, Daniel emptied one of his accounts.”

“He moved money.”

“He packed a bag.”

“He deleted messages.”

Emily felt her stomach tighten.

“You knew?”

“I suspected.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

May you like

Claire’s grip tightened on the steering wheel.

“Because I thought Richard was going to tell you.”
