Chương 3

“The ones you just saw.”

Emily looked down at the papers.

The names seemed less like ink now and more like a wound someone had written down.

“Why would his sister come to you?”

Richard hesitated.

That hesitation was enough to make Emily step back.

“Dad.”

“I knew her before today.”

The answer landed strangely.

Not shocking.

Not impossible.

Just incomplete.

“Before today?”

Richard looked around the ballroom.

Several guests were still nearby, pretending not to listen.

“Not here.”

Emily almost laughed.

“Of course.”

She shook her head slowly.

“Everything important happens somewhere else with you.”

“That is not fair.”

“No?”

Her voice stayed low, which somehow made it sharper.

“You decided where I went to college.”

Richard frowned.

“Emily.”

“You decided when Mom needed help.”

His face changed.

“That was different.”

“You decided when to sell the house.”

“I was trying to keep us from losing everything.”

“And now you decided when I deserved the truth.”

Richard had no immediate response.

That hurt more than if he had argued.

A person could fight with anger.

A person could fight with lies.

There was nothing to fight against when someone simply looked ashamed.

Across the room, Claire ended the call.

She stood frozen for several seconds before putting the phone back into her purse.

Emily noticed that she did not cry.

That bothered her.

A guilty person was supposed to cry.

A guilty person was supposed to break.

Claire just looked like someone who had received confirmation of a disaster she already expected.

“Who was that?” Emily asked.

Claire looked at her.

The distance between them felt larger than the entire ballroom.

“My attorney.”

The answer changed the atmosphere immediately.

Several guests who had been whispering stopped.

Richard's expression hardened.

“Why would you need an attorney?”

Claire looked at him.

“You know why.”

Emily turned toward her father.

“What does that mean?”

Richard looked away.

It was the first time Emily had ever seen him look afraid of another person.

Not worried.

Not concerned.

Afraid.

The difference was obvious.

“Dad.”

“I did not know she would be here.”

Claire laughed once.

There was no humor in it.

“You did not know I would be here?”

Her voice carried across the room.

“You invited me.”

Every person nearby became still.

Richard stared at her.

“I invited you because I thought you had information Emily needed.”

“And then you told me to stay quiet.”

Emily looked between them.

The pieces moved, but they did not connect.

Not yet.

She hated that feeling.

Her entire life had been built around knowing where things belonged.

Family photos on the hallway wall.

Bills in the kitchen drawer.

Holiday traditions repeated every year.

Even grief had a place after her mother died.

It lived in certain rooms.

On certain dates.

Inside certain songs.

But this had no place.

This was something that had been hidden while everyone else adjusted around it.

“Someone explain what happened,” Emily said.

Nobody moved.

Then Claire spoke.

“Daniel was already married.”

The words were not loud.

They did not need to be.

The room heard them anyway.

Emily stared at her.

The sentence was so impossible that her mind rejected it before she could feel it.

“No.”

Claire looked down.

“I wish I was wrong.”

Emily looked at Richard.

Her father closed his eyes.

That was enough.

The room shifted around her.

Not physically.

Nothing moved.

But everything she believed about the last two years changed position.

Daniel's late nights.

The business trips.

The careful way he avoided talking about certain parts of his past.

The explanations that had felt slightly incomplete but harmless because love made people generous.

Emily had always considered herself practical.

She was the person friends called when they needed advice.

She was the person who read contracts before signing them.

She was the person who noticed when a restaurant charged the wrong amount on a bill.

And yet she had looked at the man she planned to marry and accepted every missing piece because she wanted the whole picture to be beautiful.

“Who is she?” Emily asked.

Claire looked at her.

“Her name is Lauren.”

“Where is she?”

Nobody answered.

That frightened Emily more than anything.

If Lauren had been there, if she had walked through those doors, if she had screamed and exposed everything, at least the moment would have had a shape.

Instead, there was only absence.

“Is she safe?” Emily asked.

Claire's eyes moved toward Richard.

Emily noticed.

Again.

That small exchange.

That private language between people who had been sharing information from which she had been excluded.

“Is she safe?” Emily repeated.

Richard spoke carefully.

“She left town.”

“When?”

“Yesterday.”

Emily stared at him.

“Yesterday?”

He nodded.

“She was scared.”

“Of Daniel?”

Richard did not answer quickly enough.

Emily felt a new kind of anger replacing the first one.

The betrayal was no longer only about a wedding.

It was about the number of people who had been making decisions around her life.

“Why did nobody tell me?”

Claire stepped forward.

“Because Daniel knew how to make people doubt themselves.”

Emily looked at her.

Claire's expression softened slightly.

“I know how that sounds.”

“It sounds like something someone says when they need me to believe them.”

Claire nodded.

“That is fair.”

The honesty caught Emily off guard.

Claire did not defend herself.

She did not ask for forgiveness.

She simply accepted the accusation.

“I met Daniel when I was nineteen,” Claire said.

Richard immediately interrupted.

“Claire.”

“No.”

She looked at him.

“You don't get to decide what she hears anymore.”

The sentence silenced him.

Emily watched her father absorb those words.

She had spent years believing Richard was the person who could fix anything.

Now she was watching another person tell him he had lost that right.

Claire took a breath.

“I was Daniel's first wife.”

Emily felt the room tilt.

The first wife.

Not another woman.

Not an affair.

A wife.

May you like

A legal marriage.

A life that existed before Emily ever said yes.
