Chương 4

“Then why are you standing here?” Emily asked.
Claire looked at the bouquet in her hands.
Only then did Emily notice how strange it was.
The flowers were the same colors as the ones chosen for her ceremony.
Soft white roses.
Small green leaves.
A careful imitation.
“I came because Daniel told me he was finally going to tell you.”
Emily looked toward the open doors.
“He lied.”
Claire nodded.
“He does that when he feels cornered.”
Emily tightened her grip on the folder.
The paper edges pressed into her palm.
A small pain.
Something real.
Something she could understand.
“Where did he go?”
Claire looked at Richard.
Then at Emily.
“I don't know.”
That answer should have disappointed her.
Instead, it scared her because everyone in the room seemed to be searching for him.
And people only searched for someone when they believed finding them mattered.
Richard reached into his jacket pocket.
He pulled out his phone.
There was a message waiting on the screen.
Emily saw his face change before he turned it away.
“What?”
Richard hesitated.
The instinct to protect himself returned for a moment.
Then he handed her the phone.
The message was from Daniel.
It contained only one sentence.
I know what you found, and you need to understand that your father is not telling you the whole truth.
Emily read the message three times before the meaning settled.
The words were simple.
That was what made them dangerous.
Daniel had always been careful with language.
He avoided direct statements when a softer version could protect him.
He could turn an accusation into a misunderstanding and a lie into something that sounded like uncertainty.
But this message was different.
It was not an apology.
It was not a request.
It was a warning.
She looked up at her father.
“What does he mean?”
Richard did not answer immediately.
The room had become too crowded with people who knew they were witnessing something private and too uncomfortable to admit they were still watching.
He took the phone back slowly.
“Emily, we need to leave.”
“No.”
The word surprised him.
It surprised her too.
For years, she had followed Richard's instincts during difficult moments because he was usually right about practical things.
Call the insurance company.
Talk to the doctor.
Get the paperwork.
Handle the problem before it grows.
But this was not a broken pipe or a financial mistake.
This was her life.
She was done letting other people decide when she was ready to hear it.
“What does he mean?” she asked again.
Richard looked toward the entrance of the ballroom.
Outside, a few guests were gathering near their cars, still holding champagne glasses they had forgotten to put down.
Inside, the staff waited for instructions about a wedding that no longer existed.
The estate manager stood near the wall pretending not to listen.
Nobody knew what to do when the celebration became evidence.
“I don't know,” Richard said.
Emily watched his face.
“You don't know?”
“No.”
“That is the first honest answer you have given me today.”
Richard flinched.
The reaction was small, but she saw it.
Claire moved closer.
“Emily.”
Emily turned toward her.
The anger was still there, but it had changed.
Before, Claire had been the person standing between her and the life she thought she had.
Now she was another person trapped inside Daniel's decisions.
That did not make her innocent.
It just made the situation harder.
“What does Daniel have on my father?” Emily asked.
Claire looked confused.
“I don't know.”
“Then why would he say that?”
Claire glanced at the phone in Richard's hand.
“Because Daniel knows how to make people afraid of the wrong thing.”
Richard's expression tightened.
“Careful.”
Claire looked at him.
“That sounded familiar.”
The silence afterward was uncomfortable.
Emily noticed something she had missed before.
Richard and Claire were not strangers.
They were not people who had simply met because of Daniel.
There was history between them.
Not friendship.
Not trust.
Something more complicated.
Something built from years of avoiding the same conversation.
“You knew Claire before today,” Emily said.
Richard looked away.
“Yes.”
“How?”
He exhaled.
“After your mother died, I hired a private investigator.”
Emily stared at him.
The answer was not what she expected.
“Why?”
“Because I started finding things that did not make sense.”
“About Daniel?”
Richard nodded.
Emily felt a strange emptiness.
Not surprise.
Not even anger.
Something closer to exhaustion.
Her father had been investigating the man she planned to marry while she was choosing flowers.
He had been collecting information while she was writing vows.
“How long?” she asked.
“Six months.”
The answer almost made her laugh.
Six months.
Half a year of secrets.
Half a year of people making decisions around her.
“You knew for six months that something was wrong.”
“I knew something was wrong.”
“That is a different sentence.”
“Yes.”
Richard's voice softened.
“Because I did not know the whole truth.”
Emily looked at him.
For the first time that day, she wondered if there were parts of the story even Richard had not been able to control.
That possibility frightened her.
“What did you find?”
Richard looked at the folder.
“Records.”
“What kind of records?”
“Financial ones.”
Claire looked down.
Emily noticed.
“Daniel was not just hiding a marriage,” Richard said.
“He was hiding money.”
The words changed the room again.
Not because money was shocking.
Because money was practical.
Money left trails.
Money created records.
Money made people ask questions.
“How much?”
“I don't know exactly.”
Richard paused.
“But enough that he needed help moving it.”
Emily looked at Claire.
“From you?”
Claire shook her head quickly.
“No.”
The answer came too fast.
Then she corrected herself.
“I mean, not the way you think.”
Emily almost smiled at the absurdity.
“The way I think?”
She looked around the ballroom.
“I don't think I know how to think anymore.”
Claire lowered her eyes.
May you like
“My father owned a company Daniel worked with.”
Emily waited.
