Chương 6

"No."

The answer confused everyone.

"Then who?"

Claire whispered.

"The person who started all of this."

The house fell silent.

The child pressed against the bars.

Mara waited.

She could feel another truth approaching.

Another piece of her life she would have to rebuild.

Claire reached into her coat and pulled out an old photograph.

She held it toward Mara.

Mara took it slowly.

The picture showed a family gathering from years ago.

Before the disappearance.

Before the lies.

Before everything broke.

She looked at the faces.

Her own younger self.

Daniel.

Claire.

And one more person.

Someone she never expected.

Someone who had stood beside her while she searched.

Someone who had comforted her during the darkest years.

Mara's hand began shaking.

"No."

Claire nodded sadly.

"Yes."

Mara looked up.

"She did this?"

Claire whispered.

"She was the one who wanted your daughter gone."

Mara stared at the photograph.

The person she had trusted most.

The person who had helped her survive.

Was the person who had destroyed her life.

And before she could say anything else, the sound of another car echoed through the night.

Everyone turned.

A second vehicle was arriving.

Claire's expression changed instantly.

"She's here."

Mara looked toward the darkness.

The woman who had been hidden behind every secret was finally coming.

And this time, there was nowhere left for anyone to hide.

The second vehicle stopped beside the first, and the headlights flooded the yard with harsh white light.

Mara stood still, holding the old photograph in one hand and the metal bars with the other.

She could feel the truth moving closer.

Not a memory.

Not a rumor.

Not another piece of paper.

A person.

A person who had been part of her life.

A person who had watched her suffer.

The driver's door opened slowly.

A woman stepped out wearing a long dark coat, her expression calm and controlled.

For a second, Mara did not recognize her.

Then the light moved across the woman's face.

And everything inside Mara broke.

Rebecca.

Her oldest friend.

The woman who had sat beside her during endless nights of grief.

The woman who had brought food to her house when she was too broken to cook.

The woman who had held her hand at the funeral when Mara believed her daughter was gone forever.

Mara stared at her in disbelief.

"No."

Rebecca stopped walking.

Her face showed no surprise.

Only acceptance.

"Mara."

The sound of her voice made Mara's anger explode.

"Don't say my name."

Rebecca lowered her eyes.

"I know you're angry."

"Angry?"

Mara stepped forward.

"You don't get to call this anger."

Her voice shook.

"This is my entire life."

Rebecca remained silent.

Daniel moved beside Mara.

"You knew."

Rebecca looked at him.

"Yes."

Daniel's face changed.

"You knew everything?"

Rebecca looked toward the child behind the bars.

"I knew enough."

Mara felt sick.

The same words.

The same excuse.

Everyone knew enough.

Everyone except her.

Claire stepped closer.

"Tell her the truth."

Rebecca looked at Claire.

A strange sadness passed between them.

"You came back."

Claire nodded.

"I had to."

Rebecca looked at Mara again.

"I always knew this day would come."

Mara laughed softly.

"You always knew?"

She held up the photograph.

"You knew I would find this?"

Rebecca looked at the picture.

"I knew someone would eventually tell you."

"Why didn't you?"

Rebecca looked away.

"Because I was afraid."

Mara shook her head.

"No."

She stepped closer.

"You weren't afraid."

Her voice became quieter.

"You were protecting yourself."

Rebecca did not deny it.

The silence was enough.

The little girl behind the bars watched Rebecca carefully.

She did not know who this woman was.

But she saw the pain on Mara's face.

She understood that this person was connected to the sadness that surrounded them.

Mara turned toward Rebecca.

"Why?"

The question was simple.

But it carried years of suffering.

"Why would you do this?"

Rebecca closed her eyes.

"I didn't plan for any of this to happen."

Mara's expression hardened.

"Then explain what you planned."

Rebecca looked at the ground.

"I wanted to expose Daniel."

Daniel frowned.

"What?"

Rebecca looked at him.

"You think I forgot what you did?"

Mara looked between them.

"What did he do?"

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

Claire answered before he could.

"Years ago, Daniel discovered information about Victoria."

Mara looked at Daniel.

"What information?"

Daniel took a breath.

"Victoria was involved in illegal activities."

Rebecca nodded.

"He found evidence."

"Then why didn't he go to the police?"

Daniel looked away.

"Because I was afraid."

Mara felt the same painful pattern repeating.

Everyone was afraid.

Everyone made choices.

And she paid the price.

Rebecca continued.

"Daniel wanted to use the information to protect himself."

Daniel shook his head.

"That isn't true."

Rebecca looked at him.

"You were going to make a deal."

Daniel said nothing.

Mara looked at him.

"Was she right?"

Daniel's silence answered.

Mara closed her eyes.

Another betrayal.

Another person who had chosen survival over honesty.

Rebecca continued.

"When I found out, I thought I could force the truth into the open."

"By taking my daughter?"

Rebecca looked at her.

"No."

Her voice became emotional for the first time.

"I never wanted your daughter hurt."

"Then why was she hidden?"

Rebecca looked at Victoria's old house.

"Because Victoria took control of everything."

Claire stepped forward.

"Don't pretend you were powerless."

Rebecca looked at her.

"You know what happened."

"I know you made the first choice."

The words changed Rebecca's expression.

Mara noticed.

"What first choice?"

Nobody answered.

Mara's patience disappeared.

"Enough."

Her voice echoed across the yard.

"No more secret conversations."

She looked at every person standing there.

"No more looks between people who know something I don't."

She pointed toward her daughter.

"That little girl lost ten years because everyone thought they had the right to decide what was best."

Her eyes filled with tears.

"You all took away her mother."

The words were impossible to ignore.

May you like

Even Rebecca looked ashamed.

Mara turned back to her daughter.
