Chương 5

"When?"

Daniel looked toward the road.

"Now."

Everyone heard it at the same time.

A distant sound.

A car approaching through the darkness.

The headlights appeared between the trees.

The vehicle moved slowly toward the house.

Evelyn's face became filled with fear.

The child gripped the bars tighter.

Mara stood between her daughter and the approaching car.

The person she had searched for.

The person who had stolen years from her.

The person who knew every hidden truth.

Was finally arriving.

And this time, Mara was ready.

The headlights grew brighter as the vehicle slowly approached the house.

Mara did not move.

The cold wind pushed against her hair, but she barely noticed.

Her entire focus remained on the road ahead.

For ten years, she had imagined the moment when she would finally face the person responsible for taking her daughter away.

She had imagined anger.

She had imagined screaming.

She had imagined demanding answers.

But now that moment had arrived, and all she felt was a strange emptiness.

Because she was no longer chasing a mystery.

She was standing in the middle of the truth.

The car stopped near the edge of the property.

The engine remained running for several seconds.

Nobody spoke.

Daniel moved slightly in front of Evelyn.

Mara noticed.

"Are you protecting her?"

Daniel shook his head.

"No."

His voice was quiet.

"I'm protecting you."

Mara looked at him.

"After everything, you think you can protect me?"

Daniel looked toward the car.

"No."

He swallowed.

"I'm trying to stop you from becoming the person this night wants you to become."

Mara understood what he meant.

Anger was easy.

Hatred was easy.

But she had already lost ten years.

She refused to lose herself too.

The driver's door opened.

A woman stepped out.

She was older than Mara remembered from old photographs.

Her hair was darker than expected, pulled back neatly.

Her face showed the signs of years spent hiding.

But Mara recognized her immediately.

Even after all the lies.

Even after all the time.

It was her sister.

Claire.

Mara felt her knees weaken.

"No."

The word came out as a whisper.

Claire stopped walking.

For a moment, neither sister moved.

The world became silent.

The child behind the bars watched them with confusion.

She had never seen this woman before.

But she saw something in Mara's face.

Something that looked like pain and love at the same time.

Claire slowly stepped closer.

"Mara."

Hearing her name from that voice was almost unbearable.

Mara shook her head.

"You are dead."

Claire's eyes filled with tears.

"I know."

The answer was so simple that it hurt.

"You know?"

Mara's voice rose.

"You know I buried you?"

Claire looked down.

"I know."

"You know I stood there?"

Mara's hands trembled.

"I stood there and cried for you."

Claire closed her eyes.

"I know."

"How?"

Mara stepped forward.

"How could you know?"

Claire looked at Evelyn.

Then Daniel.

Then back at Mara.

"Because I was there."

The confession cut through the night.

Mara stared at her.

"What does that mean?"

Claire took a breath.

"It means I watched from a distance while everyone believed I was gone."

Mara felt anger return.

"You let me mourn you."

"I had no choice."

Mara laughed painfully.

"No choice?"

She pointed toward the child.

"She spent years without her mother."

Claire looked at the little girl.

Her expression broke.

"I know."

"You knew?"

Claire nodded.

"I knew everything."

The words were almost impossible to hear.

Mara turned away for a moment.

She felt like she could not breathe.

Every person around her had known.

Every person had carried pieces of the truth.

And she had been the only one left outside.

"Why?"

The question was barely audible.

"Why did everyone decide I couldn't handle the truth?"

Claire looked at her.

"Because the truth was dangerous."

Mara shook her head.

"No."

Her eyes filled with tears.

"The truth was painful."

She looked around at everyone.

"But the lies destroyed me."

Nobody argued.

Because nobody could.

Claire slowly approached the bars.

The little girl watched her carefully.

"Is she..."

Claire nodded.

"Yes."

Mara looked at her daughter.

"She is."

Claire touched the metal bars gently.

"I am sorry."

The little girl stepped backward slightly.

She did not know this woman.

She only knew that every adult around her was connected by secrets.

Mara noticed the child's fear.

She immediately moved closer.

"It's okay."

She looked at her daughter.

"You don't have to talk to anyone you don't trust."

The little girl looked at her.

That protective instinct was something Mara had carried for years.

Even when she thought her daughter was gone.

Even when she believed there was nothing left to protect.

Claire watched them.

"You really never stopped looking."

Mara looked at her.

"Did you think I would?"

Claire's face collapsed.

"No."

Her voice broke.

"I knew you wouldn't."

"Then why?"

Claire looked down.

"Because Victoria was watching."

The name changed the atmosphere instantly.

Mara looked toward the road.

"Where is she?"

Claire did not answer.

Mara noticed.

"Where is she?"

Claire took a breath.

"She is not the only person you should be afraid of."

Daniel reacted immediately.

"What does that mean?"

Claire looked at him.

"It means you still don't know everything either."

Daniel stepped forward.

"I know enough."

Claire shook her head.

"No, you know what you were allowed to know."

Evelyn looked worried.

"Claire."

The younger woman turned toward her.

"You promised there would be no more lies."

Evelyn lowered her eyes.

"I know."

Mara looked between them.

"What are you talking about?"

Claire faced her.

"The night your daughter disappeared, Victoria did not take her because of revenge."

"Then why?"

Claire looked at the child.

"Because someone paid her."

Mara felt a chill.

"Someone paid her to take my daughter?"

Claire nodded.

"Someone who knew exactly where you would search."

"Who?"

Claire looked at Daniel.

He immediately shook his head.

"No."

Mara followed her gaze.

May you like

"Daniel?"

Claire looked away.
