Chương 4

Mara stood frozen beneath the cold night sky, unable to understand the words that had just shattered everything she believed.

Her sister was dead.

At least, that was what she had been told.

For years, Mara had mourned her.

She had stood beside a grave.

She had listened to people speak about a tragic accident.

She had accepted a loss that now felt like another carefully constructed lie.

"That isn't possible," Mara whispered.

Daniel looked at her with a sadness that made her even angrier.

"You have to believe me."

Mara turned toward him.

"Believe you?"

Her voice carried across the yard.

"You want me to believe you after ten years of secrets?"

Daniel lowered his head.

"No."

His answer surprised her.

"I don't deserve that."

The honesty stopped her for a moment.

But it did not erase the pain.

The phone remained silent in her hand.

Victoria was still connected, waiting.

Waiting to see what Mara would do next.

"Where is she?" Mara asked.

Daniel looked confused.

"What?"

"My sister."

Her eyes narrowed.

"Where is she?"

Daniel looked toward Evelyn.

The older woman slowly shook her head.

"She is not here."

Mara stepped forward.

"Then where?"

Nobody answered.

The silence became another betrayal.

The little girl behind the bars watched the adults carefully.

She sensed that every answer created another question.

She sensed that the people around her had been living inside a maze of secrets.

Mara turned back to the phone.

"Victoria."

The voice returned instantly.

"I knew you would understand eventually."

"Stop talking like you know me."

Mara's voice trembled with anger.

"You destroyed my life."

Victoria remained calm.

"No."

Mara closed her eyes.

"Do not say that."

"You lost your daughter because people around you chose lies over truth."

Mara looked at Daniel and Evelyn.

She hated that part of Victoria's words felt true.

"Why did you call me?"

Victoria answered after a pause.

"Because I wanted you to find out before they changed the story again."

Mara frowned.

"Who are you talking about?"

"The people standing around you."

Evelyn stepped closer.

"Victoria, enough."

The phone went quiet.

Mara looked at Evelyn.

"You know her."

Evelyn did not deny it.

"Yes."

The answer was almost a whisper.

"How?"

Evelyn looked at the child.

Then at Mara.

"Because I was there the night everything happened."

Mara felt her body tense.

"You were there?"

Daniel looked away.

Another secret.

Another piece of the truth hidden from her.

Mara's voice became dangerously quiet.

"Start talking."

Evelyn took a slow breath.

"The night your daughter disappeared, I received a call."

"From who?"

"Your sister."

Mara stared at her.

"My sister called you?"

Evelyn nodded.

"She was terrified."

Mara's hands began shaking.

"What did she say?"

Evelyn looked toward the dark road beyond the house.

"She said she had made a mistake."

The words felt heavier than they should have.

"What mistake?"

Evelyn looked back.

"She said she had trusted someone she shouldn't have."

Mara felt a terrible realization forming.

"Victoria."

Evelyn nodded.

"Your sister thought she could control Victoria."

"Why?"

Evelyn hesitated.

"Because she believed she was protecting you."

Mara laughed bitterly.

"Everyone keeps saying they were protecting me."

Her eyes filled with tears.

"But nobody protected me."

Nobody spoke.

The truth was too painful to argue with.

Mara looked at the little girl.

The child was still holding her hand through the bars.

The small touch was the only thing keeping her from breaking.

"What happened after my sister called?"

Evelyn continued.

"She wanted to bring your daughter back."

Mara stared.

"Then why didn't she?"

"Because Victoria found out."

The older woman lowered her voice.

"And after that, everything changed."

The wind moved through the trees.

The house felt colder.

"Victoria threatened her," Evelyn said.

"She threatened all of us."

Mara looked at Daniel.

"You included."

Daniel nodded.

"She knew things about me."

"What things?"

Daniel looked ashamed.

"Things I was afraid would hurt everyone."

Mara shook her head.

"Your fear hurt everyone anyway."

Daniel accepted the accusation.

He had no defense left.

The phone suddenly crackled.

Victoria spoke again.

"Ask Evelyn what happened to your sister after that."

Mara looked at Evelyn.

The older woman went pale.

"What happened?"

Evelyn did not answer.

"Mara..."

"No."

Mara stepped closer.

"Not another secret."

Her voice broke.

"I cannot keep discovering pieces of my own life from strangers."

Evelyn closed her eyes.

"Your sister survived."

The words hit harder than any scream.

Mara stopped moving.

"What?"

"She survived."

Mara stared at her.

"Then why did I bury her?"

Evelyn looked down.

"Because the person who died was not her."

A cold silence filled the yard.

Daniel looked at the ground.

Even he had never heard the full truth.

Mara felt dizzy.

The world she knew was collapsing around her.

"Whose grave did I visit?"

Evelyn whispered.

"I don't know."

Mara stepped backward.

"No."

Her voice became smaller.

"No, this cannot keep happening."

She looked at the sky.

Every memory from the last ten years suddenly felt uncertain.

Every conversation.

Every photograph.

Every moment she thought she understood.

All of it had been built on lies.

The little girl called her softly.

"Mom."

Mara immediately looked back.

The child was crying.

"I want to go home."

Those four words destroyed every wall Mara had built around her emotions.

She moved closer to the bars.

"You will."

The child looked at her.

"Promise?"

Mara placed her hand over the child's.

"I promise."

For the first time that night, her voice sounded certain.

Not because she knew how everything would end.

But because she knew one thing.

Nobody would take her daughter away again.

Daniel stepped forward.

"There is something you need to know before you leave."

Mara looked at him.

"What now?"

He swallowed.

"The reason Victoria wanted you to find out tonight."

Mara waited.

Daniel looked toward the phone.

"She didn't call because she wanted to help you."

Victoria remained silent.

Daniel continued.

May you like

"She called because she is coming here."

Mara's expression changed.
