Chương 4

Vincent never did that.
Even when he protected her, he never took away her ability to decide.
The next morning, Lena received a message from an unknown number.
She stared at the screen for several seconds.
Her hands became cold.
She knew who it was before reading it.
Vincent noticed her expression from across the room.
“Lena.”
She looked up.
“I think it’s him.”
Vincent walked closer but did not take the phone.
“What do you want to do?”
The question surprised her.
She expected him to tell her what to do.
She expected him to handle everything.
Instead, he gave the decision back to her.
Lena looked at the message.
It was an apology.
At least, that was what Derek called it.
He wrote about regret.
He wrote about mistakes.
He wrote about wanting forgiveness.
But Lena could see the difference between regret and responsibility.
A person could feel sorry because they lost control.
That did not mean they understood the pain they caused.
“I don’t want to answer,” she said.
Vincent nodded.
“Then don’t.”
She placed the phone down.
The simple action felt powerful.
For so long, every choice had been made out of fear.
This one was made from strength.
Later that day, Vincent received a visit from someone he trusted.
The conversation happened privately in his office.
“Derek is not giving up,” the man said.
Vincent remained silent.
“He believes if he can convince Lena to forgive him, everything disappears.”
Vincent looked through the window.
Outside, Lena was walking through the garden.
She moved slowly, enjoying the sunlight.
“She doesn’t owe him forgiveness,” Vincent said.
“No.”
“She doesn’t owe him anything.”
The man nodded.
Vincent had dealt with enemies before.
But this was different.
Derek’s greatest weapon had never been physical strength.
It had been making Lena doubt herself.
And Vincent knew the only way to defeat that was by helping her remember who she was.
That evening, Lena found Vincent sitting alone outside.
The city lights reflected across the dark sky.
“You’re thinking too much,” she said.
Vincent looked over.
“You noticed?”
“Yes.”
She sat beside him.
For a while, they said nothing.
The silence between them felt comfortable.
Not empty.
Comfortable.
“I used to think being strong meant never needing anyone,” Lena said.
Vincent listened.
“I was wrong.”
She looked toward the city.
“Being strong means knowing who is safe enough to trust.”
Vincent looked at her.
Those words meant more than she realized.
Because trust was something he valued more than loyalty.
Trust had to be earned.
And Lena had given him something precious.
She had allowed him to see the parts of her that were broken.
“I’m glad you came that night,” she whispered.
Vincent’s expression softened.
“So am I.”
The answer was simple.
But it carried everything neither of them said.
The night Derek entered her life had been filled with fear.
But the night Vincent found her became the moment everything began to change.
And neither of them knew yet that the hardest test was still waiting.
The hardest test arrived sooner than either of them expected.
It came on a morning that started like any other.
Lena was sitting near the window with a book in her hands when she heard a car stop outside the house.
At first, she ignored it.
She had learned not to let every unfamiliar sound pull her back into fear.
But then she saw Vincent’s expression change as he looked through the glass.
Not panic.
Not anger.
Awareness.
Something had happened.
Lena slowly stood.
“What is it?”
Vincent turned toward her.
“Stay inside.”
The words were calm, but she noticed the seriousness behind them.
Her heart tightened.
“What happened?”
Before Vincent could answer, his phone rang.
He picked it up.
“Yes?”
A few seconds passed.
His jaw tightened slightly.
“I understand.”
He ended the call.
Lena watched him carefully.
“It’s Derek, isn’t it?”
Vincent did not respond immediately.
That silence was enough.
“What did he do?”
“He went to the police with a statement.”
Lena frowned.
“A statement about what?”
“He claims the night at the apartment was not what you said it was.”
The room became quiet.
Lena felt the old fear returning for a moment.
Not because she believed him.
Because she knew how easily lies could become powerful when repeated enough times.
“He’s blaming me,” she whispered.
Vincent stepped closer.
“He’s trying to control the story.”
“But what if people believe him?”
Vincent looked directly at her.
“Then we show them the truth.”
The certainty in his voice helped steady her.
But this time, Lena did not hide behind him.
She took a slow breath.
“I want to know what he said.”
Vincent studied her.
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
It was a different answer than the one she would have given before.
Before, she would have avoided anything connected to Derek.
She would have wanted someone else to handle it.
But healing had changed something inside her.
She no longer wanted to run from her own story.
She wanted to take it back.
Vincent nodded.
“Then we do it your way.”
Later that day, they met with the legal team reviewing the situation.
Lena sat at the table, listening carefully as they explained Derek’s claims.
He described himself as the victim.
He said he had lost control because of an argument.
He suggested Lena had exaggerated what happened.
Every sentence made her hands tighten.
Not because she believed him.
Because she recognized the pattern.
He was trying to make her question reality.
The same way he had done before.
When the meeting ended, Lena remained seated.
Everyone else left the room.
Vincent stayed.
“You okay?”
She looked at the papers in front of her.
“I thought I was past this.”
Vincent sat across from her.
“You are.”
“Then why does it still hurt?”
“Because healing does not erase what happened.”
She looked at him.
“Then what does it do?”
May you like
“It means what happened no longer controls you.”
Lena looked down.
