Chương 2

Outside the building, the rain continued falling.
Vincent stepped beneath the streetlights with Lena still in his arms.
The city moved around them, unaware of the quiet rescue that had just happened inside the old apartment.
Lena looked up at him.
“Do you always show up when things fall apart?”
Vincent gave the smallest smile.
“No.”
She waited for the answer.
“I show up when someone I care about needs me.”
For the first time in many hours, Lena allowed herself to believe she was safe.
Her eyes closed again.
But this time, it was not from fear.
It was from knowing she did not have to fight anymore.
Vincent carried her toward the waiting car as the rain reflected across the pavement.
The darkness behind them slowly disappeared.
And for Lena, the night that began with pain ended with someone finally choosing to stand beside her.
The days that followed were quieter than Lena expected.
She had prepared herself for another storm, another argument, another moment where she would have to defend every choice she made.
But instead, she found herself waking up in a peaceful guest room overlooking the city, with sunlight passing through the curtains and no sound of anger waiting outside the door.
For the first time in weeks, silence did not feel dangerous.
It felt safe.
Vincent had arranged everything without making her feel like a prisoner.
A doctor had examined her injuries.
A specialist had helped her understand the fear and exhaustion her body had been carrying.
And every person around Vincent treated her with respect instead of questions.
Nobody demanded explanations before she was ready.
Nobody forced her to remember what she wanted to forget.
That kindness confused her more than cruelty ever had.
Lena sat near the large window that afternoon, holding a warm cup of tea between her hands while watching the city below.
The bruises on her arm were fading, but the memories remained.
She could still hear the sound of broken glass.
She could still remember the feeling of being trapped.
She could still remember wondering if anyone would ever notice she was disappearing.
A quiet knock came from the door.
She turned.
Vincent stood there, still wearing the same calm expression he always carried, but she noticed the tiredness around his eyes.
He had not slept much since the night he found her.
“Can I come in?” he asked.
Lena gave a small nod.
“You don’t have to ask.”
Vincent walked inside and placed a folder on the table.
He did not push it toward her.
He simply left it there.
“What is that?” Lena asked.
“Information about what happened.”
Her expression changed.
“Derek?”
Vincent nodded.
Lena looked away.
Part of her wanted to know everything.
Another part of her wanted to forget the entire night existed.
“He’s being investigated,” Vincent said.
“I don’t want revenge.”
“I know.”
She looked back at him.
The answer came too quickly.
“You know?”
“Yes.”
Vincent sat across from her.
“You never wanted him destroyed.”
Lena remained silent.
Because he was right.
She wanted the pain to stop.
She wanted the fear to end.
But she never wanted to become someone who only knew how to hurt others.
“I just wanted him to understand what he did,” she whispered.
Vincent studied her carefully.
“He will.”
The confidence in his voice made her believe him.
Not because he sounded powerful.
Because he sounded certain that the truth mattered.
Lena looked down at her hands.
“Why do you care so much?”
Vincent did not answer immediately.
That was something she had noticed about him.
He never rushed important words.
He allowed silence to exist until he knew exactly what he wanted to say.
“Because years ago, someone helped me when I had nothing,” he finally said.
Lena looked at him.
“I never forgot what that felt like.”
She waited.
But Vincent looked toward the window instead.
There were parts of his life he rarely shared.
Parts hidden behind the controlled image everyone knew.
“I promised myself that if I ever had the ability to protect someone else, I would.”
Lena felt something change inside her.
She had spent so long thinking she was a burden.
A problem.
Someone who needed to be fixed.
But Vincent never looked at her that way.
He looked at her like she was a person who deserved care.
“You make it sound simple,” she said softly.
“It isn’t simple.”
“Then why do you make it look that way?”
A faint smile appeared on Vincent’s face.
“Because someone has to stay calm when everything else is falling apart.”
Lena looked at him for a long moment.
She realized that Vincent carried his own pain quietly.
He protected others because he understood what it felt like to need protection.
The realization made her see him differently.
Not as someone powerful who rescued her.
But as someone who knew exactly what loneliness felt like.
Later that evening, Vincent stood alone on the balcony outside his office.
The city lights stretched endlessly beneath him.
His phone rested in his hand as he listened to a report from one of his trusted employees.
“Derek has been trying to contact people connected to Lena,” the voice said.
Vincent’s expression hardened slightly.
“Why?”
“He claims he wants to explain himself.”
Vincent looked through the glass doors toward the living room where Lena sat reading quietly.
“No contact.”
“Yes, sir.”
“And make sure she is never approached without her permission.”
“Understood.”
Vincent ended the call.
For a moment, he stayed there in silence.
He had faced dangerous people before.
He had dealt with threats far greater than Derek.
But this situation felt different.
Because this was not about power.
It was about someone who had been hurt when she trusted the wrong person.
And Vincent refused to let that happen again.
The next morning, Lena woke up early.
She walked through the quiet house and found Vincent in the kitchen preparing coffee.

The sight surprised her.
The man everyone feared was standing in a simple shirt, making breakfast like an ordinary person.
