Chương 3

“You cook?” she asked.
Vincent looked over his shoulder.
“Sometimes.”
“I didn’t expect that.”
“Most people don’t.”
A small laugh escaped her.
It was the first real laugh he had heard from her since the night in the hallway.
The sound made him pause.
Not because it was loud.
Because it was genuine.
Lena noticed his expression.
“What?”
“Nothing.”
“You looked surprised.”
“I forgot what your laugh sounded like.”
Her smile slowly faded into something softer.
“You remember?”
“I remember more than you think.”
The words stayed between them.
There were memories neither of them talked about.
Small moments from before everything became complicated.
Times when Lena had been happier.
Times when Vincent had quietly noticed how much strength she carried.
She looked away, suddenly emotional.
“I thought nobody saw me.”
Vincent placed the coffee cup down.
“I did.”
Those two words broke through the wall she had built around herself.
Lena turned away quickly, trying to control her emotions.
But Vincent did not pretend not to notice.
He simply stood there.
He gave her the space to feel what she needed to feel.
That was what made the difference.
He never tried to control her emotions.
He never told her how to heal.
He only stayed.
And sometimes, staying was the greatest kind of protection.
Across the city, Derek sat alone in a small room, staring at the consequences of his actions.
The confidence he once had was gone.
The people who once followed him had disappeared.
Every excuse he created sounded weaker each time he repeated it.
He wanted to blame Vincent.
He wanted to blame Lena.
He wanted to blame anyone except himself.
But the truth continued returning.
He had made choices.
He had caused damage.
And now he had to face what those choices had created.
Meanwhile, Lena slowly began rebuilding her life.
She started walking outside again.
She started sleeping through the night.
She started believing that the world was not always a place where she needed to defend herself.
And every step forward reminded her of one important truth.
Survival was not the same as living.
For the first time in a long time, she was beginning to live again.
And beside her, Vincent remained exactly where he promised he would be.
Not in front of her.
Not above her.
Beside her.
The first weeks of healing passed slowly, but Lena began to notice small changes that once seemed impossible.
She no longer woke up expecting footsteps outside her door.
She no longer checked every message with fear before opening it.
She no longer apologized for needing help.
Those changes were quiet, but Vincent noticed every one of them.
He never celebrated them loudly.
He never reminded her how far she had come.
He simply allowed her to recognize her own strength.
One afternoon, Lena walked into Vincent’s office carrying a small notebook.
She stopped at the doorway when she saw him reviewing documents.
“You look serious,” she said.
Vincent looked up.
“I usually do.”
A small smile appeared on her face.
“That’s true.”
He closed the folder in front of him.
“What brings you here?”
Lena looked down at the notebook in her hands.
“I wanted to show you something.”
She placed it on the desk.
Vincent opened it carefully.
Inside were pages filled with handwritten thoughts, memories, and plans for the future.
Not the future she had imagined before.
A different one.
A future where she was not defined by what happened to her.
A future where she could choose who she wanted to become.
“This is good,” Vincent said.
Lena raised an eyebrow.
“That’s all?”
He looked at her.
“What were you expecting?”
“I don’t know.”
“Something more dramatic?”
She smiled.
“Maybe.”
Vincent turned another page.
“You wrote that you want to start working again.”
“Yes.”
“Are you ready?”
Lena thought about the question.
A few months earlier, she would have answered immediately.
She would have said yes because she needed to prove she was fine.
But now she understood the difference between pretending and knowing.
“I’m scared,” she admitted.
Vincent nodded.
“That’s normal.”
“I thought you would tell me not to be afraid.”
“No.”
The answer surprised her.
“Why?”
“Because fear is not always a warning.”
He looked at her carefully.
“Sometimes fear means something matters.”
Lena held onto those words.
She had spent so much time fighting fear that she never considered listening to it.
Maybe fear was not proof that she was weak.
Maybe it was proof that she was trying again.
That evening, Vincent took her to a quiet restaurant away from the crowded parts of the city.
He chose a place where nobody would recognize them.
A place where they could simply sit and talk.
Lena looked around the room.
“It feels strange.”
“What does?”
“Being somewhere normal.”
Vincent understood immediately.
For a long time, normal life had felt impossible for her.
She had lived surrounded by tension and uncertainty.
Now a simple dinner felt unfamiliar.
“That will change,” he said.
“How do you know?”
“Because you’re already changing it.”
She looked at him.
“You always sound certain.”
“Someone has to.”
She laughed softly.
The sound filled the quiet space between them.
But before either of them could say more, Vincent’s phone vibrated.
His expression changed slightly when he saw the message.
Lena noticed.
“What happened?”
He hesitated.
That hesitation told her more than the message itself.
“Vincent.”
He looked at her.
“Derek was released temporarily.”
The warmth in the moment disappeared.
Lena lowered her eyes.
She had known this day would come.
Even though she had moved forward, the past could still reach toward her.
“Is he coming here?”
“No.”
Vincent answered immediately.
“I made sure of that.”
She studied his face.
“You can’t control everything.”
“No.”
He paused.
“But I can make sure you have a choice.”
Those words reminded her of the thing she had lost before.
Choice.
May you like
Derek had taken away her confidence in her own decisions.
He had made her feel trapped.
