Chương 7
Claire looked at Evelyn.
"The name of the person who signed the final order."
Evelyn went pale.
Daniel noticed.
"Mom?"
Claire whispered the name.
And the moment she said it, Evelyn knew the past had returned to take something from them.
"It was signed by someone in this family."
Michael stared.
"Who?"
Claire looked directly at Daniel.
"Your grandfather."
Daniel felt his heart sink.
But then Claire continued.
"And beside his signature was another name."
The room became completely still.
"Your father's name."
Richard stepped back.
"What?"
Claire looked at him with tears in her eyes.
"The records show that someone helped cover up the truth after you married Evelyn."
Richard shook his head.
"That is impossible."
Claire looked down.
"I wish it was."
Daniel looked between his parents.
A terrible thought entered his mind.
"Are you saying Dad knew?"
Richard's face changed.
"I didn't."
His voice was firm.
"I swear I didn't."
But before anyone could respond, the lights inside the mansion suddenly flickered.
The room went dark for a brief second.
Then the lights returned.
Everyone looked toward the windows.
A black vehicle was parked outside the gates.
And someone inside the car was watching the mansion.
And someone inside the car was watching the mansion.
Nobody spoke.
The sight of the vehicle outside transformed the room instantly.
The family that had spent the last few hours uncovering old secrets now faced a new fear in the present.
Daniel moved toward the window, but Richard immediately grabbed his arm.
"Don't."
Daniel looked at him.
"Why?"
Richard's voice was low.
"Because if someone is watching us, they want to know what we do next."
Michael stepped closer to the glass.
"We can't just stand here."
Evelyn looked terrified.
"No."
Everyone turned toward her.
"I know that car."
The words sent a chill through the room.
Daniel looked back outside.
"You know who owns it?"
Evelyn nodded slowly.
"I have seen it before."
"When?"
Her eyes stayed fixed on the vehicle.
"The night Michael disappeared."
Michael froze.
"What?"
Evelyn's voice became barely audible.
"There was a black car outside my house that night."
"I thought it was my imagination."
"But now..."
She stopped.
Daniel looked at the car again.
The same vehicle.
The same person watching.
The same fear returning after decades.
Richard walked toward the security panel near the entrance.
Evelyn immediately stopped him.
"No."
Richard looked angry.
"Why not?"
"Because if this person has been hiding the truth for thirty-five years, we don't know who they have connections with."
Richard stared at her.
"You think the police are involved?"
"I don't know."
"And that is exactly why we cannot trust anyone yet."
Daniel felt overwhelmed.
His entire life had changed in a single evening.
But now the danger was no longer just about the past.
Someone was actively trying to stop them.
"We need to find out who is in that car."
Michael moved toward the door.
Daniel stepped in front of him.
"No."
Michael looked surprised.
"You can't do this alone."
"I know."
"But I'm not letting you walk outside without knowing what we're facing."
Michael looked at him.
For a moment, neither brother spoke.
Then Michael nodded.
"You're right."
The simple agreement felt strange.
They had only known the truth for hours.
Yet the instinct to protect each other was already there.
Richard looked through the window again.
"The car is leaving."
Everyone watched as the black vehicle slowly moved away from the gate.
Nobody relaxed.
The fact that it left made the situation worse.
Whoever was inside had seen enough.
"They wanted us to notice them," Claire said.
Everyone looked at her.
She continued quietly.
"They wanted us to know they are still here."
Daniel looked at her.
"How do you know that?"
Claire hesitated.
"Because the person who left the threat for Michael knew exactly what would scare him."
Michael looked at her.
"What are you saying?"
Claire took a deep breath.
"I think whoever did this knows our family better than we realize."
Evelyn slowly walked toward the old photograph.
She picked it up.
"My father spent his entire life protecting the Whitmore name."
"Maybe someone else continued what he started."
Daniel looked at the picture.
"Then we find out who."
Evelyn looked at him.
"You sound like your father."
Daniel glanced at Richard.
Richard gave a small, tired smile.
"He has always been stubborn."
Daniel almost smiled.
Almost.
But the weight of the night was too heavy.
"We need proof."
Michael nodded.
"I know where to look."
Everyone turned toward him.
"The storage location where I found the documents."
Richard frowned.
"You said you already searched it."
"I searched what was visible."
Michael looked at the photograph.
"But I think I missed something."
"What?"
"There was a locked box."
Daniel stared.
"Why didn't you open it?"
Michael looked uncomfortable.
"Because I didn't have the key."
Evelyn's expression changed.
"A key."
She walked toward an old cabinet near the dining room wall.
She opened a small drawer hidden behind a decorative panel.
Inside was a collection of old family items.
Jewelry.
Letters.
A broken watch.
And a small silver key.
Daniel noticed.
"You have it."
Evelyn held the key in her hand.
"I thought this belonged to the past."
Michael looked at it carefully.
"Where did you get it?"
Evelyn looked at the key.
"Thomas gave it to me."
Michael froze.
"My father?"
She nodded.
"He told me that if anything ever happened to him, I should keep it safe."
Daniel looked confused.
"Why didn't you use it?"
"Because I never knew what it opened."
Michael slowly took the key.
His fingers trembled.
"He knew."
Evelyn looked at him.
"What?"
"He knew someone was hiding something."
The family stood together in the dining room.
Hours earlier, they had arrived as four people pretending their family was perfect.
Now they stood as five people connected by a truth that had been buried for decades.
Michael looked at Daniel.
May you like
"We should go there."
Daniel nodded.
