Chương 3

Daniel stopped breathing for a moment.

Richard looked at Evelyn.

"You said he was gone."

"I thought he was."

Evelyn's voice became fragile.

"But years later, I found out he was alive."

Daniel looked shocked.

"Then why didn't you find him?"

Evelyn closed her eyes.

"Because by the time I learned the truth, he had already grown up believing I abandoned him."

The pain in her voice silenced everyone.

Daniel returned to the table.

"Where is he now?"

Evelyn hesitated.

That hesitation told him the answer mattered.

"Mom."

She looked at him.

"Where is he?"

Evelyn slowly turned toward Claire.

Daniel followed her gaze.

The realization began forming before anyone spoke.

"No."

Claire looked at him with tears in her eyes.

"Daniel..."

"No."

He stepped back.

"Are you saying..."

Evelyn nodded.

"Your brother is someone you have known for years."

The room felt smaller.

Daniel searched through every face, every memory, every conversation.

Then a name appeared in his mind.

A name that suddenly made everything feel impossible.

"Is it..."

He could barely say it.

"Is it Michael?"

Claire looked down.

Evelyn did not answer.

She did not need to.

Daniel's expression changed.

Michael had been his closest friend since college.

The man who had stood beside him during his wedding.

The man who had helped him through his father's illness.

The man who had always joked that they felt like brothers.

But Daniel had never imagined those words could be literal.

"Michael knows?" Daniel asked.

Evelyn nodded.

"He knows now."

"When did he find out?"

"Three months ago."

Daniel looked hurt.

"Three months?"

"Everyone knew except me."

Claire immediately shook her head.

"No."

"I didn't know whether I should tell you."

"I was afraid of destroying everything."

Daniel looked at her.

"You let me call him my best friend without knowing he was my brother."

Claire's voice broke.

"I was trying to protect you."

Daniel looked away.

Everyone had used those words.

Protect you.

But all he felt was the weight of years stolen from him.

Richard slowly approached his son.

"Daniel, your mother made mistakes."

"But she loved you."

Daniel looked at his father.

"I believe she loves me."

"But love doesn't erase the truth."

Evelyn nodded.

"You are right."

"I was afraid that if you knew, you would look at me differently."

Daniel stared at her.

"How could I not?"

The words hurt her, but she accepted them.

"I deserve that."

A long moment passed.

Then Daniel noticed something else.

"The birthmark."

Evelyn looked at him.

"Michael has it too."

Daniel remembered.

A childhood summer when Michael had shown him the mark on his wrist.

A joke they had made about being twins.

A strange coincidence they had laughed about.

But it was not a coincidence.

It was the truth trying to find a way back to them.

Daniel slowly sat down.

His anger was still there.

His confusion was still there.

But beneath everything was something stronger.

A desperate need to understand.

"Where is Michael now?"

Evelyn looked toward the hallway.

"He is waiting."

Daniel froze.

"He is here?"

Before anyone could answer, footsteps echoed from the entrance of the mansion.

The dining room door slowly opened.

And the man Daniel had called his brother for fifteen years stood there with tears in his eyes.

And the man Daniel had called his brother for fifteen years stood there with tears in his eyes.

Michael remained at the doorway, unable to take another step.

The confident man Daniel knew from countless memories was gone.

In his place stood someone carrying the same pain Evelyn had carried all these years.

Someone who had spent his entire life searching for answers he never thought he would find.

The room remained silent.

Nobody moved.

Daniel looked at him, waiting for an explanation that somehow felt impossible.

"Michael," Daniel whispered.

Michael slowly nodded.

"I know this is a lot."

Daniel let out a quiet breath.

"A lot?"

His voice was not angry anymore.

It was something deeper.

Something closer to heartbreak.

"You knew."

Michael looked down.

"Yes."

"You knew you were my brother."

Michael swallowed.

"Not at first."

He stepped into the room carefully.

"I found out the truth after I discovered the adoption records."

Daniel stared at him.

"Three months ago."

Michael nodded.

"Three months ago."

"And you said nothing."

Michael looked at Evelyn.

Then back at Daniel.

"I wanted to."

"I wanted to come to you immediately."

"But I was afraid."

Daniel looked confused.

"Afraid of what?"

Michael's eyes filled with emotion.

"Afraid that you would look at me differently."

The words struck Daniel because they sounded familiar.

Almost identical to what his mother had said.

Everyone had been afraid.

Everyone had been protecting themselves from the moment when the truth would finally arrive.

Michael walked closer to the table.

"I spent my whole life wondering why my mother gave me away."

"I spent years believing that I was unwanted."

Evelyn covered her mouth.

A quiet sob escaped before she could stop it.

Michael looked at her.

"I hated you."

The words were painful but honest.

Evelyn nodded slowly.

"I know."

"I spent years angry at a woman I had never met."

"I imagined that you forgot about me."

"I imagined you built a perfect family and never thought about the child you lost."

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

The woman who always appeared strong suddenly looked fragile.

"But I was wrong," Michael continued.

"I learned the truth."

"I learned that you searched for me."

"I learned that you wrote letters you never sent."

"I learned that you kept my photograph hidden because you couldn't let go."

Evelyn's tears finally fell.

"I never stopped loving you."

Michael looked away.

"I know that now."

The room became quieter.

Daniel watched the two people standing in front of him.

A mother and son separated by decades.

A family broken by decisions made before he was even born.

He wanted to be angry.

May you like

He wanted someone to blame.

But all he could see was the amount of pain everyone had carried.
