Chương 5

"You are right."

"I spent my whole life deciding what people could handle."

"And every time I made that decision, I created another secret."

Michael stepped forward.

"This isn't only about Evelyn."

"Someone else was involved."

Richard looked at him.

"Who?"

Michael reached into his jacket and pulled out a small envelope.

It was old and worn, with faded edges.

"I found this hidden behind a panel in my grandmother's old study."

Daniel looked at the envelope.

"Your grandmother?"

Michael nodded.

"The same grandmother who kept the adoption records."

He placed the envelope on the table.

Nobody touched it.

It sat there like another piece of the past waiting to reveal itself.

"Inside was a letter," Michael said.

"A letter written thirty-five years ago."

Evelyn's expression changed.

"What did it say?"

Michael looked at her.

"It said that someone in the Whitmore family knew where I was."

Richard's face hardened.

"Who?"

Michael shook his head.

"The letter didn't name them."

"It only said that the truth was being protected because someone was afraid of losing their inheritance."

The words created a different kind of silence.

A silence filled with suspicion.

Daniel looked around the room.

His family had already changed once tonight.

Now he wondered how many more pieces were missing.

"Are you saying someone separated you from Mom for money?"

Michael looked at him.

"I don't know."

"But I know someone worked very hard to make sure I stayed away."

Evelyn reached for the envelope.

Her hands trembled as she opened it.

The paper inside was yellowed with age.

She unfolded it carefully.

Everyone watched her eyes move across the page.

Then her expression changed.

Richard noticed immediately.

"What is it?"

Evelyn did not answer.

"Evelyn."

She looked up.

"It was my father."

Nobody spoke.

Daniel stared.

"Your father?"

She nodded slowly.

"My father was the one who arranged everything."

Michael looked shocked.

"I thought it was my grandmother."

Evelyn shook her head.

"She helped him."

"But he made the decision."

Richard sat down heavily.

"I never knew."

Evelyn looked at him.

"Because I never told you."

Daniel felt anger returning.

"Why?"

Evelyn looked at him with tears in her eyes.

"Because I was afraid of what you would think of me."

Daniel shook his head.

"Mom, this isn't about what I think of you."

"Then what is it about?"

"It's about understanding why everyone made choices that affected my life without asking me."

Her face fell.

She had no answer.

Michael looked at the letter again.

"What did your father say?"

Evelyn slowly read the words.

"He said the Whitmore family could not survive a scandal."

"He believed a child born outside of marriage would destroy our reputation."

Daniel looked disgusted.

"So he gave away a child to protect a family name?"

Evelyn nodded.

"Yes."

Richard looked away.

The old family name that had once represented pride now felt like a burden.

Michael's voice became quiet.

"I spent thirty-five years thinking I was abandoned because nobody wanted me."

Evelyn reached toward him.

"I wanted you."

"I searched for you."

"I fought for you."

"But I was young and powerless."

Michael looked at her.

"And I was a child who needed someone to fight harder."

The words hurt.

But Evelyn accepted them.

"I know."

Daniel watched the two of them.

For the first time, he understood that forgiveness was not simple.

Love could exist beside anger.

Pain could exist beside hope.

People could hurt each other without ever wanting to.

Then Richard noticed something else in the letter.

"Wait."

Everyone looked at him.

"There is another page."

Evelyn turned the paper over.

A smaller note had been folded behind the first letter.

Her face changed again.

"What?"

Michael asked.

She slowly unfolded it.

This time, she did not read aloud.

Richard stood beside her.

His expression became serious.

"Who wrote that?"

Evelyn whispered.

"Thomas."

Michael froze.

"My father?"

Evelyn nodded.

Daniel looked between them.

"Your biological father knew?"

Michael stepped closer.

"What does it say?"

Evelyn held the letter with shaking hands.

"He knew about you."

Michael's eyes widened.

"What?"

"He found out you were born."

"He tried to come back."

"But my father stopped him."

The room felt like it had lost all air.

Michael stepped backward.

"You're saying my father tried to find me?"

Evelyn nodded.

"He spent years searching."

"According to this letter, he never gave up."

Michael's face broke.

All his life, he had believed both of his parents had left him.

Now, in one night, he discovered that the story he knew was completely wrong.

Daniel looked at him.

"Michael..."

But Michael could not speak.

He stared at the letter.

The person he had blamed for his loneliness had actually been searching for him.

Evelyn moved closer.

"I am so sorry."

Michael wiped his eyes.

"I don't know what to do with this."

"You spent my whole life hiding the truth."

"And now I find out the truth was even bigger than I imagined."

Daniel stepped closer.

"You don't have to figure it all out tonight."

Michael looked at him.

The simple kindness in Daniel's voice almost broke him.

"How are you doing that?"

Daniel frowned.

"Doing what?"

"Still treating me like your brother after finding out everything."

Daniel looked at him for a long moment.

Then he answered honestly.

"Because you were my brother before I knew why."

Michael lowered his head.

Those words carried more weight than any explanation.

Claire watched them quietly.

She knew this family would never return to what it was before.

But maybe that was not always a bad thing.

Sometimes the truth did not destroy a family.

Sometimes it showed the cracks that had been hidden for too long.

Richard looked at Evelyn.

"Does anyone else know?"

Evelyn shook her head.

"I thought the secret ended with my father."

Michael looked at the letter.

"But someone tried to hide these documents recently."

Everyone turned toward him.

"How do you know?"

May you like

Michael reached into his pocket.

He pulled out another piece of paper.
