Chương 13

His security team tensed.
The communications director whispered, “Don’t.”
Ethan looked at the reporter.
“My employee is a private person. Leave her out of this.”
Then he left.
It was more than Maria had wanted him to say.
She told him so the next morning.
“You said no statement about me.”
“I didn’t say your name.”
“Everyone knows who you meant.”
“I know.”
She was angry.
He let her be.
“I’m sorry.”
“You keep doing things first and apologizing second.”
“Yes.”
“That isn’t improvement.”
“No.”
She folded Noah’s jacket with unnecessary precision.
Ethan waited.
Finally Maria looked at him.
“Why did you stop?”
“At the reporter?”
“Yes.”
“Because he asked about you.”
“That is not an answer.”
He thought.
“Because I was angry.”
“That’s an answer.”
“I thought protecting you meant saying something.”
“You thought.”
“Yes.”
Maria sighed.
“You don’t always have to protect people by making decisions for them.”
“I know.”
“Do you?”
“I’m learning.”
She looked at him.
“Slowly.”
“Apparently that’s the only speed anyone recommends.”
Maria almost smiled.
That afternoon, she told him she had decided to stay.
“For now.”
Ethan nodded.
He did not ask for a longer promise.
That was new.
Two weeks after the foyer confrontation, Vanessa asked to see Noah with Dr. Kim present.
Ethan’s first instinct was no.
He waited a day before answering.
That was also new.
Dr. Kim supported a short meeting if Ethan was comfortable.
He was not.
He agreed anyway.
Not because Vanessa deserved it.
Because Noah still asked for her.
The meeting took place in Dr. Kim’s office.
The room had soft furniture, shelves of toys and no black-and-white marble.
Vanessa entered without her usual polished armor.
She wore jeans, a gray sweater and almost no jewelry.
Noah stared at her.
She stopped several feet away.
“Hi.”
Noah moved closer to Ethan.
Vanessa’s face tightened.
She stayed where she was.
“Hi, buddy.”
Noah looked at Dr. Kim.
Then at Vanessa.
“Vessa.”
“Yes.”
Vanessa smiled through tears.
“Vessa.”
He did not go to her.
She sat on the floor.
For several minutes, she said nothing.
Noah played with a plastic truck.
Vanessa watched.
Finally he pushed it toward her.
She caught it.
“Thank you.”
He waited.
She pushed it back.
They did that for a while.
Ethan sat against the wall, every muscle in his body resisting the urge to control the room.
Then Noah touched the locket around his neck.
Vanessa saw it.
Her breathing changed.
Noah opened his fist and showed it to her.
“Mama Claire.”
Vanessa closed her eyes.
Ethan’s body tensed.
Dr. Kim said nothing.
Vanessa opened her eyes.
“Yes.”
Her voice shook.
“Mama Claire.”
Noah watched her.
Vanessa swallowed.
“She’s your mama.”
Ethan looked away.
Noah returned to the truck.
That was it.
No grand forgiveness.
No child running into her arms.
No dramatic collapse.
Just a two-year-old accepting a sentence adults had nearly destroyed themselves avoiding.
After the meeting, Vanessa cried in the hallway.
Ethan stood several feet away.
“I’m sorry,” she said.
He did not know whether she meant him.
Noah.
Claire.
Herself.
Maybe all of them.
“I know.”
“I kept thinking if I could get him to stop saying her name, I would stop hearing what I wasn’t.”
Ethan looked at her.
“What?”
“That I came after.”
He said nothing.
Vanessa wiped her face.
“I came after Claire. That’s just true.”
“Yes.”
“I thought after meant less.”
“It doesn’t have to.”
“But it did to me.”
Ethan leaned against the wall.
“I made that worse.”
She looked at him.
“Yes.”
He accepted it.
She seemed almost disappointed not to have a fight.
“I’m filing,” she said.
“For divorce?”
“Yes.”
He nodded.
“I thought you might.”
“I can’t come back to that house.”
“No.”
“And I don’t think you want me there.”
“No.”
She looked down.
“That hurts.”
“I know.”
“Do you hate me?”
Ethan thought about it.
“No.”
Vanessa laughed weakly.
“That almost makes it worse.”
“I’m angry.”
“I know.”
“And I don’t trust you with him.”
“I know.”
“But I don’t hate you.”
She pressed her lips together.
“Okay.”
They stood in silence.
Then Ethan said, “I’m sorry I asked you to become part of my life without admitting how much of it I refused to change.”
Vanessa stared at him.
“That’s not why I hurt Noah.”
“No.”
“Don’t make it why.”
“I’m not.”
“Good.”
She picked up her bag.
At the elevator, she turned.
“I did love him.”
Ethan believed her.
That was part of the tragedy.
“I know.”
The elevator closed.
The divorce did not become a war.
It also did not become friendly.
Lawyers exchanged documents.
There were arguments about the Manhattan apartment, art, charitable commitments and a house in Aspen Vanessa had believed they would eventually buy.
Ethan got petty about a set of antique dining chairs.
Vanessa got petty about a wine collection she barely drank.
Ben called them both idiots.
At one point Ethan refused to release a painting because Vanessa had chosen it.
Three days later he realized he hated the painting.
He gave it to her.
Human beings did not become wise because something terrible happened.
Mostly they became temporarily aware of their own stupidity.
Vanessa continued seeing Dr. Kim on her own for a while, then found another therapist.
Her contact with Noah remained limited and structured.
Eventually, Ethan allowed short visits in public places.
Not because he had forgotten.
Because Noah still had a relationship with her, and because she had stopped asking him to make that relationship prove something.
Sometimes he ignored her completely.
Sometimes he ran to her.
Once he cried when she left.
Ethan did not turn any of it into a verdict.
Maria’s life changed too.
The attention faded after a few weeks, but not before someone photographed her buying groceries.
Her mother kept the screenshot.
Maria threatened never to visit again.
Her mother framed it as a joke.
May you like
Maria stayed employed by Ethan, but their relationship shifted.
She stopped calling him Mr. Blackwood every time.
