Chương 5

For a brief moment, something like fear appeared on his face.
Then it vanished.
“Eleanor.”
His voice was calm.
“You finally found him.”
David stepped forward.
“You knew.”
Richard looked at him.
“Who are you?”
“The person protecting Noah.”
Richard gave a small smile.
“Then you have no idea what you are protecting him from.”
David’s expression hardened.
“Explain.”
Richard looked at Eleanor.
“You really told him nothing?”
Eleanor’s eyes narrowed.
“You have no right to speak about honesty.”
Richard ignored the anger.
He looked back at Noah.
“That boy should never have been brought here.”
Noah moved closer to David.
The reaction was immediate.
David noticed.
So did Eleanor.
“Do not speak about him like he is a problem,” Eleanor said.
Richard sighed.
“You still do not understand.”
“Then make me understand.”
Richard walked toward the security screen.
He looked at the frozen image of Thomas Reed.
“Thomas always had a weakness.”
Eleanor stared at him.
“What did you do?”
Richard looked almost disappointed.
“I protected this family.”
David’s voice became colder.
“You call hiding a child’s identity protection?”
Richard turned toward him.
“You think you know what happened.”
“I know enough.”
“No.”
Richard shook his head.
“You know a story created by people who wanted sympathy.”
Noah looked confused.
“Why are you saying these things?”
Richard looked at the child.
For the first time, his expression softened.
“Because you deserve to know why your life was hidden.”
Eleanor stepped between them.
“Do not pretend you care.”
Richard looked at her.
“I cared more than you realize.”
The room became silent.
Eleanor’s face showed anger.
“Michael trusted you.”
Richard looked away.
“That was his mistake.”
David noticed the answer.
Not the words.
The emotion behind them.
There was guilt.
Deep guilt.
“What happened that night?” David asked.
Richard remained quiet.
The silence lasted several seconds.
Then he spoke.
“Michael discovered something.”
Eleanor’s voice became sharper.
“What?”
Richard looked at her.
“He discovered that our father had left the company with hidden debts.”
Nobody moved.
“He was going to expose everything.”
David frowned.
“And you stopped him.”
Richard did not answer.
But his silence said enough.
Eleanor’s face changed.
“My son was trying to save this family.”
Richard nodded slowly.
“Yes.”
Then he looked at Noah.
“And that is why he was dangerous.”
Noah looked down.
David immediately placed a hand on his shoulder.
Richard noticed.
“You think I am the villain.”
David did not respond.
“Maybe I am.”
Richard looked at the floor.
“But there is something you do not know.”
Eleanor watched him carefully.
“What?”
Richard reached into his coat.
Everyone became tense.
David stepped forward.
But Richard only removed a small photograph.
He placed it on the table.
The picture showed Michael holding a newborn baby.
Noah stared at it.
His breath stopped.
“That is me?”
Eleanor picked up the photograph.
Her hands shook.
She had never seen it before.
“Where did you get this?”
Richard looked at her.
“Michael gave it to me.”
“Why?”
“Because he knew he might not survive.”
The room went silent.
“He asked me to protect his son.”
Eleanor looked confused.
“Then why did you hide him?”
Richard closed his eyes.
“Because someone else was watching.”
David looked at him.
“Who?”
Richard slowly turned toward the mansion windows.
“The person who wanted Michael dead.”
A shadow moved outside near the garden.
Everyone noticed it at the same moment.
The guard reached for his radio.
But Richard spoke first.
“He is already here.”
The lights in the security room suddenly flickered.
The monitors went black.
And from somewhere inside the mansion, a single sound echoed through the hallway.
A door opening.
The door opening echoed through the darkened hallway like a warning from the past.
Nobody moved for several seconds.
The security room remained frozen except for the faint sound of the emergency lights switching on one by one.
David immediately moved Noah behind him.
Eleanor stood beside them, staring toward the doorway.
Richard looked different now.
The confidence he had carried when he entered the room was gone.
For the first time, he looked afraid.
“Who is here?” Eleanor demanded.
Richard did not answer.
The footsteps grew louder.
Slow.
Calm.
Certain.
A man appeared at the end of the hallway.
He was wearing a dark coat and carrying a small leather folder.
He looked older than Richard, but his eyes carried the same cold calculation.
Noah noticed everyone’s reaction before he understood who the man was.
Richard whispered one name.
“Victor.”
Eleanor’s face turned pale.
She had not heard that name in thirty years.
David looked between them.
“Who is Victor?”
Richard stared at the man approaching.
“My father’s attorney.”
The man smiled slightly.
“Not just his attorney.”
He stepped into the security room.
“I was the person who made sure the Whitmore family survived.”
David immediately moved forward.
“You broke into a private property.”
Victor ignored him.
His eyes went directly to Noah.
“So this is him.”
Noah tightened his grip on David’s hand.
Eleanor noticed.
“Do not look at him like that.”
Victor looked amused.
“Still protective after all these years.”
Eleanor’s voice became cold.
“You knew.”
“Yes.”
The answer came without hesitation.
“I knew Michael had a child.”
The room became silent.
David felt Noah’s hand shake.
“You knew about a child and said nothing?”
Victor looked at him.
“You do not understand the situation.”
“No.”
David stepped closer.
“I understand perfectly.”
Victor remained calm.
“Michael was preparing to expose secrets that would have destroyed this family.”
Richard looked at him.
“You told me to hide everything.”
Victor glanced at him.
“I told you what was necessary.”
Eleanor turned toward Richard.
“You listened to him?”
Richard looked away.
“I thought I was protecting Michael.”
“No.”
Eleanor’s voice cracked.
“You were protecting yourself.”
Victor placed the leather folder on the table.
“I did what had to be done.”
David looked at the folder.
“What is that?”
“The truth.”
Victor opened it.
