Chương 4

“But I know Michael was afraid of someone before he died.”
David turned toward her.
“Why didn’t you say anything?”
“Because I was angry.”
Eleanor looked at Noah.
“I thought he abandoned me.”
She swallowed.
“I thought he chose Sarah and their child over his own family.”
Her voice cracked.
“But I was wrong.”
Noah watched her carefully.
The powerful woman who had frightened everyone at the party looked smaller now.
More human.
“Where is the envelope?” David asked.
The guard quickly pulled up another camera angle.
The flower pot near the garden entrance appeared on the screen.
But the envelope was gone.
David’s expression hardened.
“Someone already took it.”
The room changed instantly.
This was no longer only a family secret.
Someone else knew Noah existed.
Someone else knew the truth was returning.
The guard checked the footage again.
“Wait.”
He zoomed in.
“There is another person.”
The screen showed a shadow moving behind the bushes fifteen minutes after Thomas left the envelope.
A person stepped forward, took the envelope, and disappeared.
Eleanor moved closer.
“Can you identify them?”
The guard enlarged the image.
The face remained partially hidden.
But the clothing was visible.
A dark suit.
A silver watch.
A familiar movement.
Eleanor’s face turned pale.
“I know that walk.”
David looked at her.
“Who is it?”
She did not respond.
“Eleanor.”
Her eyes remained on the screen.
“It was my brother.”
The room went quiet again.
Noah looked confused.
“Your brother?”
Eleanor nodded slowly.
“Richard.”
She had not spoken his name in decades.
“He was the person who told me Michael’s accident was unavoidable.”
David’s jaw tightened.
“You mean he might have known?”
Eleanor looked toward the window.
The mansion outside suddenly felt different.
The same place where she had spent years protecting her family now felt like the place where the truth had been buried.
“Richard hated Michael,” she said.
“Why?”
“Because Michael was supposed to inherit everything.”
Eleanor looked at Noah.
“And because Richard believed my son was too weak to lead this family.”
David understood.
Someone had removed Michael because they wanted power.
A child who had never known his own history had become the missing piece in a decades-old battle.
Noah quietly touched the cake sitting on the table outside the security room.
The small gift suddenly seemed impossible.
A simple birthday cake had uncovered a secret hidden longer than he had been alive.
Eleanor noticed him looking down.
She walked toward him.
“I am sorry.”
Noah looked up.
“For what?”
“For every year you spent believing you were alone.”
The boy stayed silent.
Eleanor knelt beside him.
“I cannot change the past.”
Her voice trembled.
“But I can promise you one thing.”
She gently touched the edge of the cake plate.
Noah looked at David.
Then back at Eleanor.
“I just wanted you to like my cake.”
Eleanor broke down completely.
Not loudly.
Not dramatically.
Just the quiet pain of someone realizing how much time had been lost.
She pulled him into a careful embrace.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then David’s phone rang.
The sudden sound cut through the emotion in the room.
He looked at the screen.
Unknown number.
He answered.
“Hello?”
A voice came through.
Old.
Calm.
Certain.
“David Bennett.”
David’s expression changed.
“Who is this?”
The voice paused.
“You need to move Noah somewhere safe.”
David stood immediately.
“Who are you?”
The answer came softly.
“The person who knows who really made that cake.”
The call ended.
David stared at the phone.
Eleanor looked at him.
“What happened?”
David slowly turned toward Noah.
“Someone is coming.”
The warning in David’s hand felt heavier than any threat he had ever faced.
He had spent years protecting Noah from the pain of losing his mother, but now he realized there were dangers he had never even known existed.
Eleanor stood frozen beside him.
“Who called you?”
David looked at the phone screen.
“Someone who knew about the cake.”
A cold feeling moved through the room.
Olivia stepped closer.
“How could anyone know about the cake?”
Nobody answered.
Because the answer was impossible.
The cake had been made that morning.
Noah had carried it himself.
Only the people standing in the garden knew what it contained.
Unless someone had been watching.
Eleanor looked toward the security monitors.
“Lock down the property.”
The guard immediately reached for the control panel.
“Already doing it.”
Heavy gates around the mansion began closing.
The peaceful birthday celebration disappeared completely.
The elegant garden became a protected location.
David crouched beside Noah.
“Listen to me.”
Noah looked at him.
“You did nothing wrong.”
The boy nodded, but his eyes showed fear.
“Is someone angry because of the cake?”
David paused.
“No.”
He looked at Eleanor.
“They are angry because of the truth.”
Eleanor heard those words.
And she knew they were right.
For thirty years, the Whitmore family had been built around a lie.
Now that lie was collapsing.
A guard rushed into the security room.
“Mrs. Whitmore.”
Everyone turned.
“There is a vehicle approaching the main gate.”
David immediately stood.
“Who is it?”
The guard checked the camera.
His expression changed.
“It is Richard Whitmore.”
Eleanor closed her eyes.
The name she had avoided for decades had finally returned.
“He came himself,” she whispered.
David looked at her.
“Do you want him inside?”
Eleanor stared at the monitor.
The old woman who had once controlled every decision in her family now looked like someone preparing to face the person who destroyed it.
“Yes.”
David looked surprised.
“Are you sure?”
Eleanor nodded.
“I spent thirty years believing my son was gone because of a tragedy.”
She looked at Noah.
The gates opened.
A black luxury car slowly entered the driveway.
Richard Whitmore stepped out.
He was older than Eleanor remembered, but his confidence had not disappeared.
His silver hair was perfectly arranged.
His dark suit showed no signs of panic.

He walked toward the mansion as if he still owned every room inside it.
When he entered the security room, his eyes immediately found Noah.
