Chương 6

For a moment, Ethan could not speak.
Marcus looked older than usual.
The confidence he always carried was gone.
Only exhaustion remained.
Clara stood behind Ethan, her expression filled with disbelief.
“You.”
Marcus looked at her.
“I was hoping you would not be involved.”
Ethan's eyes narrowed.
“Involved in what?”
Marcus did not answer immediately.
That silence told Ethan more than words could.
“You were the one.”
Marcus looked away.
“You need to understand something.”
“No.”
Ethan stepped closer.
“You need to understand something.”
His voice was controlled.
Too controlled.
“You entered my home.”
Marcus stayed silent.
“You watched my children.”
Still silent.
“You convinced me that the person protecting them was dangerous.”
Ethan's expression hardened.
“Why?”
Marcus finally looked back at him.
“Because you were not seeing clearly.”
Clara shook her head.
“That is not your decision.”
Marcus looked at her with a mixture of guilt and frustration.
“You do not understand what happened here.”
“No,” Clara replied calmly.
“You decided what everyone should understand.”
Ethan watched the exchange carefully.
For years, Marcus had been the person he trusted most.
He knew his habits.
His weaknesses.
His history.
That was why the betrayal felt impossible.
“How long?” Ethan asked.
Marcus looked at him.
“How long did you manipulate me?”
A painful expression crossed Marcus's face.
“I never wanted it to go this far.”
Ethan laughed quietly.
There was no humor in it.
“That is what people say when they know exactly how far they went.”
Marcus looked toward the old photographs on the wall.
“I saw what happened to you.”
Ethan remained still.
“You lost your wife.”
The room became colder.
“You stopped sleeping.”
“You stopped trusting people.”
“You became someone who could not see anything except threats.”
Marcus looked back at him.
“And I was afraid of what would happen if the wrong person got close to your daughters.”
Clara stared at him.
“The wrong person?”
Marcus's eyes moved toward her.
“I thought you were replacing their family.”
Ethan's expression changed.
“You thought.”
Marcus lowered his voice.
“Yes.”
The answer angered Ethan more than a lie would have.
“You guessed.”
Marcus did not respond.
“You guessed, and you destroyed someone's reputation because of a feeling.”
“I was trying to protect you.”
“No.”
Ethan stepped closer.
“You were controlling me.”
Marcus looked away.
The silence confirmed it.
Ethan had spent months believing Clara was trying to take control of his family.
But the person accusing her had been the one controlling the situation all along.
“You knew exactly what to say,” Ethan said.
“You knew what I was afraid of.”
Marcus's face tightened.
“I knew you would listen.”
“That is not loyalty.”
Ethan's voice became quieter.
“That is knowing someone's weakness and using it.”
Marcus closed his eyes briefly.
“I made mistakes.”
Clara looked at him.
“Mistakes do not happen this many times.”
Marcus looked at her.
“You were becoming too important.”
The words made Ethan's expression change.
“What does that mean?”
Marcus hesitated.
Then he answered.
“It means the girls trusted her.”
Ethan waited.
“And you started trusting her too.”
The truth hung in the room.
Marcus had not been afraid of Clara hurting them.
He had been afraid of losing his influence over Ethan.
“You wanted me isolated,” Ethan said.
Marcus looked down.
“Yes.”
The admission was quiet.
But it was enough.
“You wanted me to believe nobody could be trusted except you.”
Marcus did not deny it.
Ethan felt a deep disappointment that was heavier than anger.
Because anger belonged to enemies.
This was something else.
This was grief.
He had lost faith in someone he considered family.
“Why?”
Marcus looked at him.
“Because after everything happened, you were falling apart.”
Ethan said nothing.
“I watched you destroy yourself.”
Marcus's voice became emotional.
“You buried yourself in work.”
“You pushed away everyone who cared about you.”
“You were becoming someone your daughters would barely recognize.”
Clara looked at Ethan.
She knew there was truth in those words.
But truth did not excuse what Marcus had done.
“You could have helped him,” Clara said.
Marcus looked at her.
“I tried.”
“No.”
Her voice remained calm.
“You controlled him.”
Marcus looked away.
The accusation hurt because it was true.
A small sound suddenly came from the hallway.
All three adults turned.
Ethan's face changed immediately.
The conversation disappeared from his mind.
His daughters.
He moved quickly toward the stairs.
“Avery.”
“Sophie.”
Marcus followed a step behind.
Ethan stopped and looked back.
For the first time, Marcus saw the distance between them.
“Do not move.”
Marcus stopped.
Ethan went upstairs with Clara beside him.
The girls were awake.
Avery stood near their bedroom door holding her blanket.
Sophie was behind her.
They looked frightened but not panicked.
Ethan immediately knelt down.
“What happened?”
Sophie pointed toward the hallway.
“We heard voices.”
Ethan softened his expression.
“It is okay.”
Avery looked past him.
“Is Clara in trouble?”
The question surprised him.
“No.”
He looked at Clara.
“Clara is not in trouble.”
The twins relaxed slightly.
Ethan realized something in that moment.
Even after everything.
Even after his doubts.
His daughters had never stopped trusting Clara.
Because children did not care about rumors.
They cared about who showed up.
He helped them back into bed.
Clara sat beside them until they calmed down.
Ethan stood nearby watching.
The same scene that had once created suspicion now created understanding.
When the girls finally fell asleep again, Ethan returned downstairs.
Marcus was still waiting.
But Ethan was different now.
The emotional storm inside him had settled into something stronger.
Clarity.
“You are leaving this house tonight.”
Marcus looked at him.
“I understand.”
“No.”
Ethan shook his head.
“You do not.”
Marcus waited.
“You are leaving because I cannot look at you and pretend this did not happen.”
Marcus nodded slowly.
“I deserve that.”
Ethan looked at him.
“Maybe you do.”
A pause followed.
“But I also need to know everything.”
Marcus frowned.
“What?”
“You said you were protecting me.”
May you like
Ethan's eyes hardened.
“Tell me who else was involved.”
