Chương 4

A sound of laughter came from the living room.

Ethan looked toward the doorway.

His daughters were sitting on the floor with colored pencils and paper.

Avery was drawing a house.

Sophie was drawing four figures holding hands.

Ethan walked closer.

“What are you drawing?”

Sophie looked up happily.

“Our family.”

Ethan smiled faintly.

“Who is everyone?”

She pointed carefully.

“That is Daddy.”

Then she pointed to another figure.

“That is me.”

Then Avery.

“That is Avery.”

Her finger moved to the final figure.

“And Clara.”

Ethan felt his chest tighten.

Not because Clara was in the picture.

Because he finally understood why.

She was not there because she replaced anyone.

She was there because she had become part of their safe place.

He knelt beside them.

“That is a beautiful picture.”

Sophie tilted her head.

“Are you still mad?”

Ethan looked at her.

“No.”

He glanced at Clara standing behind him.

“I was wrong.”

The twins did not fully understand the meaning of his words.

But Clara did.

And for the first time, Ethan saw a small smile appear on her face.

Not a proud smile.

Not a victorious one.

A relieved one.

That evening, Ethan made a decision.

He would find out who had manipulated him.

But this time, he would not destroy someone based on suspicion.

He would search for the truth.

After the girls went to bed, Ethan sat in his study reviewing everything.

Old messages.

Security reports.

Visitor records.

Every conversation connected to Clara.

The deeper he looked, the more uncomfortable the pattern became.

Several people had repeated the same concerns.

Almost the exact same phrases.

Different voices.

Same message.

That was not coincidence.

It was coordination.

Ethan leaned back in his chair.

For years, he had built his reputation by recognizing threats before they reached him.

Yet the biggest threat inside his own home had been the one he never considered.

Someone had made him doubt the person protecting his children.

A quiet knock came at the door.

Ethan looked up.

Clara stood there holding a small folder.

“I found something.”

His expression immediately changed.

“What is it?”

She stepped inside and placed the folder on the desk.

“I kept copies of the notes and messages because I was afraid something like this might happen.”

Ethan opened the folder.

Inside were printed messages.

Dates.

Names.

Small details Clara had collected quietly.

“You knew?”

“I suspected.”

“Why did you keep this instead of showing me?”

Clara looked at him.

“Because I did not know if you would believe me.”

The honesty in her voice was painful.

Ethan looked through the pages.

One message stood out.

A person had written that Ethan needed to be separated from anyone who influenced the girls.

Another message mentioned that he was easier to control when he was afraid.

Ethan's eyes hardened.

“Control.”

Clara nodded.

“That word appeared several times.”

He continued reading.

The more he saw, the clearer it became.

This had never been about protecting his family.

It had been about isolating him.

Making him distrust the people closest to him.

Making him easier to manipulate.

Ethan closed the folder.

“Who had access to these conversations?”

Clara hesitated.

“I do not want to accuse someone without proof.”

Ethan looked at her.

“That is exactly what I did to you.”

Her expression softened slightly.

The acknowledgment mattered.

“Tell me what you know.”

Clara sat across from him.

“There is someone who has been around this family for a long time.”

Ethan waited.

“Someone who knows your routines.”

“Who?”

Before Clara could answer, the lights in the mansion suddenly flickered.

Both of them turned toward the hallway.

The security system made a faint sound.

Ethan immediately stood.

His protective instincts returned.

But this time, Clara noticed something different.

He did not push her away.

He did not tell her to stay back.

He moved beside her.

Together.

A notification appeared on the security monitor.

Someone had accessed the private entrance near the east wing.

Ethan stared at the screen.

His face became cold.

“That door has not been used in years.”

Clara looked concerned.

“Then why is someone opening it now?”

Ethan grabbed his phone and checked the camera feed.

The image showed only a shadow moving through the dark hallway.

No clear face.

No clear identity.

But Ethan recognized something.

The person knew exactly where to go.

They were not searching.

They were following a plan.

He looked at Clara.

“Stay with the girls.”

Clara nodded.

Then Ethan stopped.

The old version of himself would have walked away alone.

He would have assumed he had to carry everything himself.

Instead, he looked back at her.

“Actually, no.”

Clara looked surprised.

“We do this together.”

For months, Ethan had believed Clara was the danger inside his home.

Now he understood something far more frightening.

The real danger had been the person who wanted him to believe that.

The east wing of the mansion had remained untouched for nearly three years.

Ethan rarely entered that part of the house anymore.

The rooms there carried too many memories.

Too many moments from a life that had changed forever.

But now, standing in the dark hallway with Clara beside him, he felt something different.

The past was no longer something he wanted to avoid.

It was something he needed to understand.

The security monitor continued showing the empty corridor.

The shadow had disappeared.

Whoever had entered knew exactly how to avoid the cameras.

Ethan studied the screen carefully.

“That person knew the blind spots.”

Clara looked at the monitor.

“Someone who worked here?”

“Maybe.”

Ethan picked up his phone and contacted security.

“Lock down every entrance.”

A calm voice answered immediately.

“Yes, Mr. Whitaker.”

“Do not alert anyone in the house yet.”

He ended the call.

Clara watched him.

“You think they are still inside.”

Ethan nodded.

“Yes.”

He looked toward the hallway leading to the children's rooms.

His expression changed.

Not fear for himself.

Fear for them.

May you like

Clara noticed.

“You should check on Avery and Sophie.”
