Chương 3

“Are you mad at Clara?”

The question hurt more than he expected.

Because it showed she had noticed.

Children always noticed more than adults believed.

Ethan knelt down in front of her.

“No.”

Sophie studied his face.

“Really?”

Ethan nodded.

“Really.”

She looked back at Clara.

“She helped me yesterday.”

“I know,” Ethan said.

His voice became softer.

“She always helps you.”

Sophie smiled.

“She helps Avery too.”

Ethan glanced toward Clara.

The housekeeper looked away modestly.

She did not want praise.

She never had.

Avery soon joined them, carrying her small blanket.

The twins stood together in the hallway.

For the first time, Ethan saw the scene clearly.

They were not choosing between him and Clara.

They were simply surrounded by people who cared about them.

That realization changed something inside him.

He reached out his hands.

Both girls moved closer.

Avery took one hand.

Sophie took the other.

Clara watched quietly.

The moment was small.

But for Ethan, it felt like the beginning of something he thought he had lost forever.

Later that afternoon, Ethan walked through the mansion with a different awareness.

He noticed the details he had ignored.

The drawings on the refrigerator.

The small toys organized near the living room.

The bedtime books stacked beside the twins' beds.

The signs of a life continuing despite his absence.

Clara had not entered his home and changed his family.

She had entered his home and helped hold it together.

That evening, Ethan found Clara preparing dinner in the kitchen.

The same kitchen where he had hidden the night before.

The same place where his doubts had started to disappear.

“I need to ask you something,” Ethan said.

Clara turned.

“What is it?”

“Who told me those things about you?”

A shadow crossed her expression.

She knew the question would eventually come.

“I do not know.”

Ethan studied her reaction.

There was no fear.

Only disappointment.

“But you have an idea.”

Clara looked down.

“There are people who do not like that the girls trust me.”

Ethan's eyes narrowed.

“Who?”

Clara hesitated.

“I do not want to create more problems.”

“That is not your decision anymore.”

His voice was firm, but not angry.

It was protective.

For the first time, Clara noticed the difference.

“I heard conversations,” she admitted.

“People saying you needed someone else to blame after everything that happened.”

Ethan became still.

“Everything that happened?”

Clara looked at him carefully.

“I thought you knew.”

The silence between them grew heavier.

“What do you mean?”

Clara slowly placed the knife down.

“There are things about the accusations against me that were never random.”

Ethan felt a cold feeling move through him.

“What are you saying?”

Clara looked toward the hallway where the girls were playing.

“I think someone wanted you to believe I was dangerous.”

“Why?”

Clara's expression became serious.

“Because someone knew you would do anything to protect your daughters.”

Ethan felt the room become colder.

The suspicion he had carried for months suddenly looked different.

Maybe the person who warned him about Clara had not been protecting his family.

Maybe they had been using his fear.

And if that was true, he had spent months fighting the wrong battle.

He looked toward the hallway where his daughters laughed softly.

Then he looked back at Clara.

“Tell me everything you know.”

And for the first time, Clara saw that Ethan was not looking at her as a threat.

He was looking at her as an ally.

Clara remained silent for several seconds after Ethan's words.

The kitchen felt unusually quiet despite the distant sounds of Avery and Sophie playing in the next room.

She looked at Ethan carefully, trying to understand whether this was truly different or simply another moment that would disappear.

For months, she had watched him build walls around himself.

She had seen him protect his daughters from every possible danger while refusing to acknowledge the pain inside his own heart.

Now, for the first time, he was asking her to help him see what he had missed.

“There was a woman who came to the mansion before you returned from your last business trip,” Clara said.

Ethan's expression tightened.

“Who?”

“I do not know her name.”

“What did she want?”

Clara looked down at her hands.

“She asked questions about me.”

“What kind of questions?”

“She wanted to know how long I had worked here, how close I was with the girls, and whether they listened to me more than they listened to you.”

Ethan felt his jaw tighten.

“That is not a normal question.”

“No.”

Clara shook her head slowly.

“It was not.”

“Why did you not tell me?”

Clara met his eyes.

“Because you were already looking at me like I had done something wrong.”

Ethan looked away.

The truth hurt because he knew it was accurate.

“She knew exactly what she was doing,” Clara continued.

“She did not accuse me directly.”

“She planted doubts.”

Clara nodded.

“Yes.”

Ethan walked slowly toward the window.

The mansion grounds stretched beyond the glass, perfectly maintained and completely silent.

Everything about his life looked controlled from the outside.

But inside, something had been falling apart for a long time.

“Did she threaten you?”

“No.”

“Did she say anything about my daughters?”

Clara hesitated.

That hesitation immediately caught Ethan's attention.

“What did she say?”

Clara took a slow breath.

“She said children forget people who leave.”

Ethan froze.

The words felt personal.

Too personal.

“She said that?”

Clara nodded.

“She said if the girls became too attached to someone else, they might stop waiting for you.”

Ethan's expression changed.

The sentence struck a fear he had carried secretly for years.

Not being replaced by Clara.

Being forgotten by his own children.

“She knew,” Ethan whispered.

Clara looked at him.

“Knew what?”

“She knew my weakness.”

The realization settled heavily between them.

Someone had not simply accused Clara.

Someone had studied him.

May you like

They had understood exactly what would make him react.

They had used his greatest fear against him.
