Chương 6
The guilt in his voice was unbearable.
Eleanor stepped closer to him.
"You failed him."
Daniel nodded.
"Yes."
"You failed Rebecca."
Another nod.
"Yes."
"And you failed me."
His eyes closed.
"Yes."
For a moment, Eleanor said nothing.
Then she looked at the wedding guests.
"Everyone leave."
The guests hesitated.
"Now."
Her voice carried the same authority it always had.
Within moments, people began moving toward the exits.
The beautiful ballroom slowly emptied.
The celebration disappeared piece by piece.
When the doors finally closed, only four people remained.
Eleanor.
Clara.
Noah.
And Daniel.
The family that had spent years avoiding the truth was finally alone with it.
Eleanor looked at the red phone.
"There is one thing I still do not understand."
Daniel looked at her.
"What?"
She held the phone tightly.
"If Rebecca wanted me to know..."
She looked at Noah.
"Why did she never come back?"
Daniel had no answer.
Then the phone suddenly vibrated in Eleanor's hand.
Everyone froze.
A new notification appeared.
A message from an unknown number.
Eleanor looked at the screen.
And the name attached to the message made her blood run cold.
Rebecca.
Rebecca.
The name on the screen seemed impossible.
Eleanor stared at it as if the letters themselves were a ghost standing in front of her.
Her hand tightened around the phone.
"No."
The word escaped her before she could stop it.
Daniel stepped closer.
"What is it?"
Eleanor did not answer.
She simply turned the screen toward him.
The color disappeared from his face.
"That is not possible."
Clara looked between them.
"What?"
Daniel slowly reached for the phone but stopped himself.
The message remained open.
A single sentence waited beneath Rebecca's name.
I know you finally found the truth.
Nobody spoke.
The silence felt heavier than all the secrets that had been revealed that night.
Noah looked at the adults.
"Is she alive?"
The question was simple.
But it changed everything.
Eleanor looked down at him.
She wanted to say no.
She wanted to protect him from another painful truth.
But she remembered what he had said.
He was more afraid of silence.
She took a slow breath.
"I don't know."
Noah looked at the phone.
"Is she my mom?"
Daniel closed his eyes.
Clara immediately moved closer to him.
"Come here."
Noah stepped toward her.
She wrapped an arm around his shoulders.
Eleanor looked at Daniel.
"You knew there was a chance."
Daniel did not respond.
That was enough.
"You knew."
His silence confirmed it.
Eleanor's expression hardened.
"All these years."
Daniel looked broken.
"I hoped."
"You hoped?"
Her voice rose slightly.
"You hoped she would never come back?"
"No."
"Then what did you hope for?"
Daniel looked at Noah.
"I hoped the truth would come out before it was too late."
Clara shook her head.
"Too late for who?"
Daniel looked at the floor.
"For everyone."
Eleanor read the message again.
I know you finally found the truth.
Her fingers hovered over the reply button.
She did not know if she wanted answers or feared them.
Finally, she typed one word.
Where?
The response came almost immediately.
A location appeared beneath the message.
The old Whitmore property.
The abandoned estate where Daniel had found Rebecca's belongings years ago.
Eleanor felt a cold feeling move through her.
"She wants us to go there."
Daniel looked alarmed.
"No."
Eleanor looked at him.
"No?"
"You don't know if this is safe."
She stared at him.
"After everything you hid from me, you are worried about safety now?"
Daniel lowered his eyes.
"I am worried because I know what happened there."
Clara looked at him.
"Then tell us."
Daniel hesitated.
"I cannot."
Eleanor stepped closer.
"You can."
Her voice was calm.
"But you are afraid."
Daniel looked at her.
And for the first time, he admitted it.
"Yes."
The honesty surprised everyone.
Daniel had spent years pretending he had control.
Now he finally looked like the man he had always been beneath the fear.
Someone who had made one terrible choice after another because facing the first mistake seemed impossible.
Clara looked at Noah.
"We are not taking him there."
Eleanor looked at her.
Clara's voice was firm.
"He has been dragged into enough adult secrets."
Noah looked up.
"But I want to know."
Clara softened.
"I know."
"I want to know where I came from."
The words hurt because they were true.
Every child deserved to know their own story.
Eleanor looked at Clara.
"He should not have to wonder anymore."
Clara held her gaze.
"And he should not have to be hurt anymore."
The two women who had been enemies hours earlier now stood on the same side.
Both were trying to protect the same child.
Eleanor looked back at the phone.
"Rebecca waited eight years."
She looked at Noah.
"We can give her one night."
Daniel looked uncertain.
"Mother."
Eleanor interrupted.
"No more secrets."
The words carried finality.
"We go there together."
The drive to the old Whitmore property was silent.
The wedding decorations and ballroom lights disappeared behind them.
The city slowly faded into empty roads and darkness.
Noah sat between Clara and Eleanor in the back seat.
Neither woman spoke much.
But for the first time, their silence was not filled with anger.
It was filled with understanding.
Clara looked at Eleanor.
"I never wanted to hate you."
Eleanor looked out the window.
"I know."
"I thought you were trying to hurt him."
"I was."
The honesty surprised Clara.
Eleanor continued.
"I was angry before I understood."
Clara nodded.
"I understand that."
Eleanor looked at Noah.
"He looks like Rebecca."
Clara followed her eyes.
"Yes."
A small sadness appeared on Eleanor's face.
"I wish I had known her."
Clara did not answer.
There was nothing she could say.
Some regrets could not be repaired.
They could only be carried.
When they arrived at the old estate, the gates were covered in rust.

The large house stood in darkness.
A place that had once represented power now looked abandoned and forgotten.
